Finding Humanity by NinaMarks
First off, don't look at the tags in this story if you choose to read it! I'm saying this because I didn't look at the tags (just based whether or not I'd continue reading it on the fabulous flow, writing, and characterization) and because of that I'm not gonna flat out say what this book was about. The tension of not knowing what type of horror books this was really glued me to the words I was reading. I thoroughly enjoyed the 'what's going on,' 'what is that,' 'what's happening,' when the characters, including the main one, got trapped. Honestly, I had all types of thoughts running through my head: a shooting, a bombing, book remake Devil... the list could go on. I'd like others to experience that same tension. So, DO NOT read the TAGS in Finding Humanity (I'm almost tempted to suggest she remove some of them). Just go straight to the first chapter!
That being said, it's very rare for me to not like this type of story. I find great points in even the worst stuff produced in regards to this author's choice topic, BUT NinaMarks story is not among the 'okay,' or 'bad, but this parts good' ones.
This story is not only well written, but the main female character is characterized perfectly. Within the first chapter, maybe even the first few sentences you'll have a feel for the type of character Emily is and that's part of what made me want to continue reading. Emily is likeable and she has with flaws and a past that no one should ever have to deal with. While I enjoy bad ass women characters that are hardcore to start of with, sometimes it's the quieter ones. Like in the remake of Beaches: strength isn't always loud.
The supporting characters are just as likeable, but honestly the one I've shined towards the most is Nick. I think Emily said it best for me when she realized that Nick was more than just a scowling, stoic, gut-man. Because of Emily's first opinions of Nick, I actually didn't read much of the beginning stuff about him (I plan on going back to read that), but getting through the story—in record time for me I might add—I started to really root for his survival. At one point, I was even thinking of him (still am really) as a love interest for Emily. And then Kyle came in. I know its horror, and usually horror writers don't include romance, but all the same I ponder. I still lean a little more towards Nick in that department.
The author also covers all the high points of her choice in topic to write about making it right up there with the more popular movies, books, and TV series that also are about this. This is well worth the time to read. The fluidity of the writing, the soft-core cliffhangers (as in not enough of a cliffhanger for you to tear your hair out but enough to make you want to continue), the characterization, and the different type of start to this topic are just added bonuses!
It started in an elevator. For Emily, every day of the last two years has been a blur. Haunted by her past, she keeps her head down, taking her college courses online and only going out to work at her mandatory internship. That all changes the day the office elevator breaks down, leaving her trapped when the screams begin. When the doors finally open, Emily is launched into a terrifying run for her life. Now, Emily must face her inner demons if she is to have any hope of surviving the monsters outside.
