Aunt Flow

It was a typical morning in the Abadeer-Gum household. It was early, but the three of them were used to it. Marshall tiredly kissed his husband goodbye as he left for work before marching back up the lengthy stairs to wake up their tween daughter for school. Every morning was a process to get her out of bed, but today she was being especially difficult.

"Val, come on! You're gonna be laaate," Marshall whined, tugging at his biological daughter's arm. She just groaned and turned away from him, wrapping herself up in her fluffy blankets. This has been his tenth attempt to wake her up. "Nope. Get out of bed." He waited a second, expecting her to listen, but quite the opposite happened. Little snores started to leave the lump of blankets. "VALERIE! NOW!" Marshall yelled, jolting his daughter awake. She ripped off her blankets angrily and shot up on her large bed.

"OKAY!" She screamed back at him, her tired face in a scowl. Her long, black hair was a mess and there were bags under her amber eyes. Marshall started at her for a moment, shocked that his little girl had just raised her voice at him.

"Get ready, we're leaving in 15 minutes," he said in a monotone voice and left her room. Valerie sighed and rubbed her face tiredly. She wasn't feeling good that morning and just wanted to stay home and rest. Her stomach hurt and she felt more tired than usual. Not to mention her mood had been out of wack for a past few days.

With a loud groan, Valerie crawled out of bed and stumbled her way to the bathroom attached her room. She began her morning routine by doing what most people do when they wake up, pee. But as she glanced down, she noticed something was wrong.

Her eyes widened as she saw it and started to panic. She didn't know what to do or who to tell. She lived with two men for gods sakes, how would they understand?

Ten minutes later, Marshall glanced at his watch and huffed. "She better not be asleep again. I'm gonna hear it from Bubs if he finds out she was late to school one more time," Marshall mumbled to himself as he climbed up the steps again. Good news, she wasn't sleeping, however they were still behind schedule and it didn't appear that she was ready. A weird feeling washed over him and suddenly he could sense that something was wrong, especially after he heard soft cries. He noticed the closed bathroom door and walked towards it, knocking on it softly.

"Val? Are you okay?" He said slowly, worried about his daughter.

"Huh?" She sniffled. "Oh. Yeah... I'm okay..." she wiped her tears away and clutched her stomach that was still in pain as she just sat on the toilet, unsure of what to do.

"Are you sure? It's okay if you're not, you can tell me."

Valerie contemplated whether to tell him or not. How would he react? He didn't know what it was like to get a period. Neither did she... Well, not until now. She should just tell him, right? Or maybe her other father would be more helpful? She couldn't lie to him though, that's for sure. It's not like she could just make up a believable excuse on the spot anyway.

"Um... is Papa still home?"

"No, he left a while ago. Why? What's wrong?"

Not knowing what to do, Valerie ditched her gross underwear and loosely put her pajama pants back on and answered the door, her father standing right there.

"Dad, I need to tell you something," she said, not making eye contact with him. "And don't freak out or get all weird like you do when I talk about girl stuff. Okay?"

"Uh... okay."

"Okay... I'm just gonna say it... Glob, this would be so much easier if Papa was here," Valerie groaned rubbing her face. "I-uh... I started my period." She finally said, looking up at her dad, who's eyes were as big as the moon. He was stunned, to say the least.

"Uh..." he felt uncomfortable and awkward. What the hell was he supposed to do about this? He didn't know anything about girls and frankly thought that most of the stuff they had to go through was gross and weird. Hence the reason why he married a man instead of another woman after his ex-girlfriend Ashley left him and their newborn daughter.

Marshall felt more uncomfortable than the time he had to tag along to go bra shopping for Val with Bubba, which he, for as long as he could, avoided them and looked at manly stuff to preserve his masculinity.

"Stop doing that! I told you not to get all weird!" Valerie yelled, feeling more embarrassed. "Can't you just call Papa or something, you're useless!"

"I'm sorry, I just don't know what to do... And the last time I tried calling him while he was working he yelled at me, so... I could call Aunt Fionna though, she's a girl right?" Marshall exited the room to go get his cell phone, also just not wanting to be in there any longer.

Valerie stayed in the bathroom while her dad was busy with finding his phone. Soon enough he returned though, holding his phone out to her with an awkward look on his face. Once she took it and put it against her ear and Marshall walked out, not wanting to be apart of that conversation.

Valerie rolled her eyes at him before saying, "Hello?" into the phone.

"Hey, hun. Is something wrong? Your dad was bein' all weird."

Valerie explained her girl problems and stressed how she didn't know what to do and how useless her father was.

Fionna sighed. "Oh lord, I'll be right over! And don't sound so sad, this is exciting! You're becoming a woman now!" Her "aunt" said cheerfully into the phone.

"Yay, womanhood..." Valerie cheered sarcastically.

"Oh stop. I'll be over in a few, stay put!"

If less than 10 minutes, Fionna barged in through the large front doors with a plastic bag in hand. Marshall, used to her usual uninvited visitations, just simply said hello and minded his own business.

Fionna ran up the stairs to her unofficial niece's room and entered her bathroom to see a discontent Valerie curled up in the bathtub.

"Hey girl, how's it goin'?" Fionna said happily, a large smile on her sun tanned face.

"Crappy... My stomach hurts and my vagina is bleeding. And I ruined my clothes..." Valerie sighed.

"Aw, honey. Welcome to girl world. Let me go get some new clothes for you and I'll show you how to do everything. Okay?" Valerie just groaned in response. Fionna retrieved an extra pair of underwear and some comfy sweatpants and brought them back to Val. "Here you go. Lemme show you how to use this thing first."

Fionna reached into her bag of goodies and pulled out a single pad. She explained and demonstrated how to properly use it and then handed a new one off to her niece. Fionna then exited the bathroom and closed the door, waiting for Valerie to be done.

Val looked at the package-like object and opened it up, repeating what her aunt had just taught her. She threw her now stained pajama pants in the bathtub and put on new ones. She washed her hands, feeling grossed out, and opened the bathroom door.

"I hate everything."

"Well that's no way to treat Mother Nature! Every girl has to go through it, and we gotta start somewhere! Now come on, let's go watch some romantic movies and eat tons of chocolate and ice cream. Also, I'll see if Bubba has a heating pad somewhere."

The two went downstairs to the spacious living room and Fionna set everything up. She pressed a button on a remote and a wide tv screen lowered from the ceiling. Fionna popped in some cheesy rom-com and accepted the two bowls of ice cream from the maid, Pepper, and handed one off to Valerie.

"Hey, Marshall Lee! Come here, I gotta ask you something!" Fionna yelled out after pressing play on the menu screen.

"What do you want?" The tall man questioned, entering the room.

"Can Val just skip school today?" Fionna smiled brightly. Marshall squinted his eyes at Fionna accusingly. "Oh, come on! It's just for today. Give her a break, man, she's going through woman issues! Don't you have a heart?"

"No."

"Oh, right. But still! I bet they're learning pointless stuff anyways. Val, what are you learning?"

"Integers."

"See, who cares!"

"Bubba does. You know how he is with education and shit." Marshall crossed his arms over his strong chest.

"Pleeeease~?" Fionna and Valerie whined in unison, giving him their best puppy dog faces.

Marshall glanced between the two girls before sighing dramatically with a roll of his eyes. "Fine! But don't come to me when he starts lecturing you," he pointed at his daughter. The girls cheered. "Good glob, I'm really gonna get it tonight..." Marshall rubbed his temples and exited the large living area to make a phone call to the school. Fionna squealed and hugged Valerie, excited about getting her way, and also being able to spend some quality girl time with her niece.

After a few minutes into the movie, Valerie set down her empty bowl and groaned. "Ugh, my stomach still hurts..."

"Oh yeah, cramps are always fun. Get used to it, hun... Hey, Pepper!" Fionna yelled out. The short, middle-aged woman popped out from the kitchen and gave Fionna a questioning glance. "Could you please get Val some Advil and a heating pad? Im afraid our little lady here has been greeted by Mother Nature."

"Oh my, why didn't you tell me sooner, miss Valerie! I'll be right back." Pepper ran off to fetch the items, and came back in no time. "Here you go, dear." She placed the heating pad on the young girl's stomach and handed her the medicine. Valerie swallowed it down with a grimace and handed the glass of water back to the maid.

"Thank you very much, Peps," she said politely. The maid nodded and left.

Hours of movie watching and junk food eating went by and the two girls were still lounging on the spacious couch. Marshall actually ended up joining their girl time after a while and watched with them.

Halfway into Legally Blonde, the front door being opened and closed was heard. Marshall and Valerie instantly gave each other a look that said, "I won't tell if you won't." Just as the pink-haired man walked into the room, the two quickly turned to the TV again, acting as nonchalant as possible.

"Hello, my beautiful family! I missed you all." Bubba kissed Fionna's and Valerie's cheeks before kissing his husband's. Marshall tilted his head back on the back of the couch and Bubba placed a loving, upside down kiss on his lips. "How was your day, love?" He asked, smoothing his hands down his chest.

"Pretty good. Lazy. Better now that you're home." Marshall shot him a smile and poked his nose. "How about yours, babe? Anything exciting happen at the office?" Bubba sighed and lifted his hands, walking around the couch to sit next to his husband instead.

"Nothing exciting, as usual," he cuddled up under Marshall's arm. "Sales are at an all time low, though. We're going to have to come up with a new candy idea to get them back up. New advertising maybe. Something bigger and better," Bubba thought aloud, mostly talking to himself.

"That really sucks. You'll come up with something though, you're smart." Marshall kissed his head and squeezed his shoulder. The girls ignored them and watched the movie. Valerie was silently praying that Bubba wouldn't ask her a certain dreaded question that he asked her on the daily. She would have to lie to her father, and that wasn't something that sat comfortably with her. But alas, the question was asked.

"How was school, Val?"

She tensed. Valerie felt her biological father eyeing her, awaiting her response. If Bubba found out that she had missed school, they both would be in a world of hurt.

She turned to face him, flashing him a convincing smile. "It was great, Papa! Learned a lot. And the lunch you packed me? Delicious!" She awkwardly laughed before turning her attention back to the screen, hoping he'd leave it at that.

"That's good to hear!" He replied happily, watching the movie as well. A sudden realization hit him. "Wait a second." Valerie tensed again. "Today's Wednesday... I don't pack you lunch on Wednesdays." He squinted his eyes accusingly at his daughter. Valerie glanced at her dad for help.

"That's because I packed it. School lunch is gross, I didn't want her wasting money on nasty shit she won't even eat," Marshall budded in, making the girl sigh in relief. Bubba seemed to buy it, shrugging it off and cuddling back into his husband. Marshall shot a wink to his daughter who was sitting diagonal to him on the 'L' shaped couch. She smiled and watched the movie.

Fionna, who had been completely focused on the movie, glanced away, curious as to when the family had been talking about. When she found out they were discussing Valerie's school day, she became quickly confused.

"Wait what?" Fionna announced. "Val didn't go to school. She was chillin with me all day," she said, her voice drenched in curiosity and confusion. The father and daughter face-palmed. Their little plan was ruined.

Bubba pushed himself off of his husband and stood, staring at his daughter in shock and disbelief. "You WHAT!?" He was livid. "You skipped school!? Valerie I am so disappointed in you! How could you just throw away your education like that?"

"Papa, it was just one day-"

"Do you know how lucky you are to even have an education? A lot of kids in the world don't get that kind of privilege, Valerie! ...I can't believe this. And you!" Bubba pointed an accusing finger at Marshall, who was sprawled out on the couch with an arm over his eyes, ignoring his husband's rant. "You allowed this!? Just because you dropped out doesn't mean you can let our daughter!" Bubba realized that Marshall was ignoring him. "Don't ignore me, Marshall Lee!" He scolded and ripped the arm away.

"Baby please, it was just one day! She's not dropping out!" Bubba didn't listen and continued to yell. Fionna, with eyes widened, carefully sat up from the couch and slowly made her way through the living room.

"You know what? I think I should go... Flame's been with the babies all day, he probably needs help," she laughed nervously and scratched the back of her neck. "Good luck with your girl problem, sweetie! Call me if you need anything!" She said to Valerie before exiting the big room. The bickering came to a sudden stop as Bubba perked up.

"Girl problem? What girl problem? What's wrong, Val?" In the split of a second he went from Angry Husband to Concerned Father. He glanced around the large room, noticing the ice cream and heating pad and quickly connecting the dots. He let out a exaggerated gasp and ran over to his daughter with an excited grin. "Oh my glob! Honey, why didn't you tell me you started your period!? You should've called me! This is huge!" Valerie glared at her black-haired father. He shrugged from the other side of the couch. Bubba squeezed next to her, wrapping the tween in his arms. "Oh glob, you're a woman now! Aww, my little angel is growing up so fast," he cried. The pink-haired father gave her some space before asking, "Why didn't you tell me?"

Valerie pointed at her biological father. "He wouldn't let me." Marshall shot up, making a sound of disagreement.

"That's not true!" He tried defending. His husband narrowed his eyes at him. "I wanted to tell you, trust me! You're better at this whole... girl thing than I am. But I was scared you were gonna yell at me again for calling you at work again."

Bubba huffed again, rolling his sparkly blue eyes. "I yell because you waste my time with dumb questions." Marshall scoffed. "If you would've told me our baby girl was visited by Aunt Flow then I wouldn't have yelled. You should stop assuming things, love." Marshall grumbled and rolled his eyes, flopping back on the couch. Bubba shook his head before focusing on his daughter. "Do we need to do more girl shopping, or did Aunt Fionna give you some stuff. What can I do to help? Ooo! I can go get you a bunch of chocolate! Heck, I'll have someone at the factory make some specially for you!" Bubba kept ranting excitedly about his plans, and both Marshall and Valerie tuned out.

Valerie had a feeling her father would act like this every time Aunt Flow came for a visit.
