Interesting Songs and Interesting Opportunities
~Cas' POV~
"Are you ready for this?" Dean asked, his face alight with excitement. Cas nodded in response. This wasn't their usual gig. This time, they were to be joined by Jo's boyfriend Ash on the drums for their last song.
It had been three days since their first date, and so far they already been to a movie and dinner together. Cas knew that Dean probably had something special in mind for the next one.
The current performer left the stage, and Dean and Cas ascended the steps. They set up their equipment and Cas' piano and Dean spoke into his mike. "How are you all doing tonight?"
The audience responded by clapping and cheering. Dean smiled. "Great, cause we have some very special music planned for you tonight. Lots of different instruments." He started with the opening notes of their first song, Thinking Out Loud. After a bar or two, Cas joined in.
When your legs don't work like they used to before
And I can't sweep you off of your feet
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks
And, darling, I will be loving you till we're 70
And baby, my heart could still fall as hard at 23
Cas looked over at Dean and saw his face, lit up the way it always was whenever he sang, as if every fiber of his being was loosening and coming alive. Dean looked happy, calm and in his element. He glanced over at Cas, and his face glowed even more. His face broke into a wide smile.
Thinking out loud
Maybe we found love right where we are
When my hair's all but gone and my memory fades
And the crowds don't remember my name
When my hands don't play the strings the same way, mmm
I know you will still love me the same
Cause honey, your soul could never grow old, it's evergreen
And baby, your smile's forever in my mind and memory
I'm thinking bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe it's all part of a plan
Well, I'll just keep on making the same mistakes
Hoping that you'll understand
No one spoke in the audience as Dean and Cas sang. All attention was on them. As they segued into the instrumental, Dean looked over at Cas and mouthed Love you.
Love you too, Cas mouthed back. And they picked back up with the chorus, after which the song ended with one long final note.
Amidst the applause, Cas put down his guitar and walked over to the piano. he made eye contact with Dean. One, two, three, four. Start. Cas and Dean began the rhythm on their respective instruments.
I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
The song was from a musical that Dean and Cas had watched once after practice. It had won an Oscar for Best Song, and the story reminded Cas of himself. The main character even lived above a vacuum store.
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You've suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You've made it now
This was the first time Cas had played piano in front of an audience, but it didn't sound like they hated it. Dean flashed him a grin after the song ended. Then he turned to the audience. "So, for our last song we're going to be joined by my friend Ash here on drums, which is what we're setting up right now. So sit tight until we come back to you, okay? Thanks for your cooperation and patience." Dean said as Cas and Ash set up the drums and mike.
Once Ash was set, Dean gave him the signal and they started.
Dean kept track of the counts before his solo, then launched in.
Beauty queen of only eighteen, she
Had some trouble with herself
He was always there to help her, she
Always belonged to someone else
I drove for miles and miles and wound up at your door
And I've had you so many times but somehow I want more
Cas joined in for the chorus.
I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
Cas took a deep breath and began his solo.
Tap on my window, knock on my door
I want to make you feel beautiful
I know I tend to get so insecure
Doesn't matter anymore
It's not always rainbows and butterflies
It's compromise that moves us along, yeah
My heart is full and my door's always open
You come anytime you want
He could hear Dean pitch in on his vocals beside him.
I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
I know where you hide, alone in your car
Know all of the things that make you who you are
I know that goodbye means nothing at all
Comes back and begs me to catch her every time she falls
Yeah
Tap on my window, knock on my door
I want to make you feel beautiful
Cas felt content and happy. He could do this forever. He wouldn't stop singing for anything. He knew Dean felt the same way.
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
Please don't try so hard to say goodbye
Please don't try so hard to say goodbye
Yeah, yeah
I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Please don't try so hard to say goodbye
Cas hit the final note on the piano, and the audience applauded wildly. This had to be one of their best performances yet.
~Dean's POV~
As they were eating dinner at their usual table, a man with a scruffy beard approached them. He was dressed in a casual but elegant button down shirt and slacks. He held a small glass of Scotch in his hand.
"Excuse me, but you wouldn't happen to be Castiel Novak and Dean Winchester, would you?" he asked, leaning over them.
"Actually, yes, we are," said Dean. This wasn't uncommon. Lots of regulars came up to them, gushing about how good they were. Dean and Cas had kind of gotten used to it, but Dean couldn't remember seeing this guy before.
The man pulled up a chair and set his whiskey on the table. "My name is Chuck Shurley, and I'd like to offer you boys a job at my recording company. You two have great voices, and they could be put to use making an album. Do you usually perform covers?"
Dean couldn't believe his ears. "Yes, we do. I think Cas and I would love to take a job at your company."
"Yes, that sounds like an amazing opportunity," Cas chimed in.
"Excellent. If you could fly to L.A by the 31st, I'll have an opening on my schedule by then. Until we see each other again, here's my number." He took a business card out of his pocket and handed it to Cas. "Pleasure meeting you two. I have no doubt we can do great things together."
And with that, he took his drink and walked away, disappearing among the other tables and patrons.
Cas and Dean shared a look. "Can you believe this?!" Cas cried. "No!" Dean cried back. If they didn't have so much self control, they probably would be jumping up and down like twelve year olds at a One Direction concert.
Dean wrapped Cas in a bear hug. "I still can't believe this is real! We're finally doing it, Cas. We're finally doing it."
