A little while later, the sun had gone down and Cassie had now been 5 drinks in, walking around and talking to everyone like they had been her best friends. She had been speaking with Rafe for a while before she excused herself, wanting to find Kiara to update her on their conversation.
It was safe to assume that Rafe had definitely been into her and they definitely could have hooked up right then and there. But, for some reason, after arguing with JJ, she began to feel embarrassed about the whole Rafe thing. She didn't know why because she never cared about what JJ had to say, but the angered words they shared before seemed to stick.
So, now, she had been walking around to try to find Kiara to give herself a bit of a break from the Cameron boy. That's when she had bumped into another Cameron, but not the one she would have been happy to see. "Oh, sor — Oh, shit," Cassie began to laugh ironically once she realized who it was. "It's Sarah Cameron," she mocked, a bit of a slur to her words.
Sarah frowned and narrowed her eyes. "Cassandra. May I ask why you've been talking to my brother this whole party?" She immediately questioned since she had noticed them together for almost the whole party.
Cassie smiled maliciously. "Wouldn't you like to know?" She replied and Sarah glared at her. Topper Thornton, her boyfriend, had been next to her, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Hey, Sarah! Sarah, can I interest you in a tasty Milwaukee beverage?" JJ asked the girl, making them all turn their attention to the blonde boy. Cassie rolled her eyes at him since he had just interrupted her total takedown of the Cameron girl, or what she thought would've been one.
"No...thanks," Sarah answered, unimpressed by the Pogue boy in front of her.
"Oh, c'mon. Is it not fancy enough for you?" JJ teased.
"No, we were just leaving."
"Hey, hey, hey, you know what? You know what? I'll take it," Topper cut in. "I'll — Thank you, man. I appreciate it."
"That's a nice suggestion there Topper, but I didn't ask you. Now, if you said pretty please, maybe—"
"Oh, pretty please."
"But you didn't."
"Pretty please?"
"Yeah, so, Sarah. No, no, you can have it," JJ tried again as he handed her the cup before Topper smacked it out of hands, making JJ's face and shirt become covered in beer. Cassie snorted a little at that.
"She doesn't want it you—"
JJ grabbed Topper's shirt angrily before Topper shoved off of him. John B stepped in front of JJ to push him away from the Thornton boy. "Nah, nah, nah, man."
"You're so funny, man!" JJ shouted at him from over John B's shoulder.
"Dirty Pogues!" Topper insulted.
This had caught John B's attention and he turned around, shoving Topper back which made the crowd that had formed around them erupt in 'oohs.' "John B! We're supposed to be incognito, remember?" Pope reminded him quickly.
"Babe, babe, babe, babe, babe," Sarah tried to stop Topper as he strode up to John B, punching him across the face and sending him to the ground. He then kicked him into the water, soaking his clothes.
"Hey, John B, don't make me drown you like your old man, all right?" Topper threatened.
This had seemed to strike a nerve in both John B and Cassie. One of the things she had in common with the Routledge boy was that both of their fathers had died not too long ago, John B's being more recent. Well, John B didn't want to accept it since Big John had only went missing but to everyone else, they assumed he was dead.
Hearing Topper say that to John B, even though the two weren't exactly super close, infuriated Cassie to her core. Bringing up a dead family member was too low a blow.
She began to walk up to him since he was busy looking down at John B. "Topper, you son of a bitch!" She screamed, causing JJ to look her way and furrow his brows a bit at the girl's reaction. But before Cassie could get any closer to Topper, someone tugged at her arm.
"Stop it, Cassie!" Sarah yelled at her, and Cassie snarled before she ripped her arm away and shoved the girl backwards, making more 'oohs' erupt across the crowd. Sarah gasped, "You bitch!"
All of a sudden, the crowd had started to chant, "Fight!" since they had wanted both John B and Topper, and Cassie and Sarah to fight.
Cassie looked over her shoulder, seeing John B and Topper fighting in the water before she looked back at Sarah. "That could be us," she jeered.
"I'm not fighting you!" Sarah responded, glancing at Topper behind Cassie worriedly.
"What? You scared?" Cassie teased as she stepped forward, making Sarah take a step back. "Oh, you are. The little princess doesn't have her knight in shining armor to save her, would you look at that?" She mocked drunkenly, getting ready to fight the girl.
However, she did seem to have her knight in shining armor that night in the form of Kiara Carrera, who quickly ran up in front of her. "Cassie, don't!" She quickly said to the girl, making Sarah narrow her eyes in confusion from behind her.
"Kiara, what the fuck?" Cassie questioned angrily, trying to push past her.
Kiara blocked her way. "We don't need this right now! John B's already fighting Topper, we don't need to keep adding eyes onto us!" Kiara reasoned and Cassie sucked in a breath. She knew Kiara had been right. Hell, she had always been right out of the two of them. Kiara was the angel that Cassie needed when two devils always occupied her shoulders.
"You got lucky this time, bitch!" Cassie shouted at Sarah, who swallowed hard before she turned her attention back to Topper and John B.
Cassie then turned around to see John B and Topper still fighting. "Thank you," Kiara breathed out right before they watched as John B shoved Topper back into the water. "Stop!"
"Come on, Topper! Let's go! Come on!" John B bellowed. Topper had gotten back up swinging before he ended up flipping John B over in the water, getting on top of him and holding his head down under the water.
"Topper! Topper, stop, no!" Sarah screamed as Cassie watched with wide eyes, starting to sober up as she realized what Topper was doing.
"No!" Pope exclaimed. "He's drowning him!"
"We gotta do something!" Cassie barked, gesturing over to what was happening.
"I know, I know!" Kiara replied, but she didn't know how she was supposed to pry Topper's hands off of John B herself.
Cassie turned to where JJ had just been standing, knowing that out of all of them, he would be there best bet. However, he hadn't been there. "JJ?" She called out before she saw him come back, something dark gripped firmly in his hand. "Oh, shit," she breathed out, knowing exactly what it had been.
But she wasn't exactly against him using it.
She watched as JJ walked past her and over to Topper, placing the gun right on the back of his head. "Yeah, you know what that is," JJ said with a crazed smile. "Your move, broski."
"Chill, dude!" Pope immediately said as everyone began to run away, noticing the gun in JJ's hands.
"Let him do it!" Cassie defended him, earning a bewildered look from the Carrera girl beside her. Not only because the blonde girl was okay with JJ pulling the gun on Topper, but because she actually defended the boy.
"JJ!" Sarah screamed at the top of her lungs. "Stop, JJ! Put the gun down!"
"Did you say somethin', princess?" JJ mocked as he continued to hold the gun against Topper's head.
Topper slowly let go of John B, holding his hands up. "We're good, we're good."
"Put the gun down!"
"All right? Come on, man."
"Kie, can you check your psycho friend, please?!" Sarah pleaded as JJ shoved Topper away, letting the boy back away fearfully.
"Your psycho boyfriend was trying to drown him!" Cassie argued back, gesturing to John B who had been coughing in the water.
"Okay, everyone, listen up! Get the hell off our side of the island!" JJ threatened before he fired two gunshots in the air, making everyone scream and run away including Sarah and Topper.
"Are you crazy?" Pope questioned as Kiara shoved JJ. "You idiot! Why would you do that?"
"It's not worth it!" Kiara told him.
"I'm saving his life, okay?" JJ pushed Pope back.
"You're so stupid! You're gonna jeopardize everything!"
"How else was he supposed to get Topper to stop?" Cassie continued defending the blonde boy since she knew that if JJ didn't do what he did, John B might have been dead because of a stupid drunk fight. She looked over to see John B just laying in the water, looking up at the stars as he dissociated.
"Look, I don't need you defending me, Cassie! I got it myself!" JJ yelled at her, making her look back at him as if she was questioning his audacity.
"Excuse me? I'm trying to help you for once and all I get is you yelling at me? What the fuck?!" She exclaimed, stepping up to him so that they were less than a foot away from each other.
"What, you want me to be grateful? Why the fuck would I be grateful to some Kook?! These are your people that did this, Cassie!" JJ continued to shout in her face, already riled up.
"My people? Are you fucking kidding me, JJ?! Why do you always insist on lumping me in with them? Last time I checked, Kiara's a Kook, too!" She argued before she looked at her friend. "No offense," she quickly added and Kiara quickly shook her head.
"Because Kie actually wants to be a Pogue! You're only here because no one else wants you around! I mean, who would want to be around someone who is constantly angry all the time and is always finding ways to insult people at every chance she gets?" JJ insulted, raising his brows.
Cassie slowly recoiled away at that, not responding right away like she had usually did in these types of situations. It was clear that JJ had hit a nerve with that one since feeling included was something Cassie struggled with ever since Sarah had dropped her.
JJ narrowed his eyes a bit, not sure why the blonde girl in front of him hadn't been fighting him back. This isn't like her, he thought to himself as he waited for a response. Kiara had seen the way her best friend reacted to JJ's words, turning to the boy. "JJ, that wasn't nice. Take it back."
"Hell no, I'm not taking it back! It's the truth!" He replied to the girl, turning his gaze to the Carrera girl.
"JJ, just apologize!"
"No, Kie!"
Cassie had felt her throat start to close up and tears start to form her in her eyes, but she quickly shoved them away, not wanting to cry in front of them. Especially JJ. "No, no, it's okay," Cassie finally spoke up, causing the two to look over at her. "I'll just go. It's clear no one wants me here anyway," she gave up before she turned around, walking away.
"Cece, that's not true!" Kiara called out after her, going to follow her.
"Don't follow me, Kiara!" Cassie snapped from over her shoulder and Kiara stopped in her tracks, releasing a sigh. "Dirty Pogues," the blonde muttered her breath angrily, shaking her head as she stomped off.
Kiara then turned back to the blonde boy, who cracked his neck. "Look what you did, JJ," she sneered, shoving him back once more.
"Yeah, man, that really wasn't cool," Pope shook his head, looking over to see Cassie disappear over the dunes and he sighed. He didn't want to admit it for JJ's sake but he had actually had fun around the girl.
JJ scoffed. "Guys, come on, it's Cassie! She's just being dramatic. We argue like this every day," he told them both, trying to convince himself that he had been in the right and he didn't actually hurt her feelings.
"Yeah, but you went a little too far. And she was also defending you," Pope said to him and Kiara nodded in agreement.
"Pope, seriously?"
"I know you don't like her, man, but that doesn't mean you should be an ass all the time. And she's Kie's friend, too," Pope continued.
"Yeah, for real. How do you think it makes me feel to see my two closest friends argue all the time?" Kiara questioned him and JJ sighed. "And JJ, don't pretend what you said wasn't a big deal. You know what it was like for her after Sarah dropped her. You know why? Because the same thing happened to me. But I also didn't have to deal with my father's death on top of it."
JJ sucked in a breath, completely forgetting that had occurred. All of a sudden, he began to feel bad about what he had just said. He didn't know why because he didn't like her, but after hearing what Pope and Kiara were saying, he began to realize that he had taken it to far.
"Shit," the blonde boy muttered, beginning to bite his nail on his thumb.
"Yeah, exactly. You better apologize to her tomorrow, JJ," Kiara demanded. "And not some half-assed one either," she added before she began walking over to John B to check up on him.
"Alright, alright," JJ breathed out, looking down at the sand.
Cassie kept on walking on her own, using the streetlights to guide her back home. She kept forcing her tears away, not wanting JJ's words to keep on getting to her even after she had left.
She knew she should've fought back, it's what she always did. She never backed down from a fight. But hearing JJ say that no one even wanted her around made her rethink everything that happened over the past two years.
From her dad dying, to her mom barely being there for her since she was dealing with her own grief, to Sarah dropping her without ever explaining why...she knew JJ's words had been right. And she hated that more than she hated the boy.
She kept on walking until a car pulled up next to her, the window rolling down. "Cassie?" The person asked and she looked over to see that it had been Rafe. "What are you doing out here?"
She blinked, trying to compose herself. "Uh...you weren't there for the end of the kegger?"
Rafe shook his head. "Nah, after you walked away and didn't seem to come back, I kinda just assumed you didn't want to talk anymore. What happened?"
Cassie quickly shook her head. "No, no, that's not why. I just needed to find my friends for a second," she assured him and he nodded, hope building back up in his system since they had been in the talking stage for weeks without doing anything else. "And don't worry about what happened. Too much crazy shit. I'm sure Topper will end up telling you."
Rafe arched a brow at that since it seemed like he missed out on an interesting end to a party. "Were you just walking here by yourself? Where's Kie and her guard dogs?"
"Those Pogues are not my friends," Cassie immediately shut it down, earning a curious look from the boy. "And yeah, I was."
"Well, I can't let you do that. Let me take you back home," he said, unlocking the car door for her.
All of a sudden, an idea sprang about in Cassie's head. If JJ hadn't wanted her to hook up with Rafe, then that's exactly what she was going to do. And soon enough, her plan to get back at Sarah Cameron had turned into a plan to get back at Sarah Cameron and JJ Maybank.
A teasing smile made its way up to Cassie's face. "Are you sure you should be driving?"
Rafe chuckled. "I'm all sobered up, don't worry. Come on." Cassie opened the car door and sat in the passenger seat. "Remind me where your place is?"
"Actually...I kinda told my mom I'd be sleeping over Kie's, so I don't think I should go back. She might get worried that something happened with Kie and I," she lied, making Rafe glance over at her. "Can I go back to yours? If that's okay?"
Rafe swallowed hard at that, seeing the look on Cassie's face in the dim lighting. It was clear that she wanted to do more than just sleep. "Yeah. Yeah, that should be fine."
Cassie grinned even more. "Perfect."
And so when Cassie arrived to the Cameron household, Rafe had snuck her in so that his father nor his sister would know she was there. As he escorted her to his room, she couldn't help but recount the memories she shared with Sarah in this place but she quickly tried to forget about them so she didn't ruin the moment.
Once she made it to his room, they had chatted a bit before Cassie had turned up the charm. And before she knew it, his mouth was pressed onto hers as he slowly pulled her coverup off, revealing the bikini he had been checking out at the kegger.
"Holy shit, you're so hot," he breathed out quietly between the kiss, which had made her giggle before she backed up onto the bed. She pressed her body down onto the soft blanket, their lips disconnecting as Rafe towered over her frame. "Have you ever done this before?" He asked her, his eyes filled with hunger.
Cassie knew exactly what he had been referring to. "No," she told him. But it had been a lie. She didn't know why she lied, maybe it been the alcohol talking since there was still some left in her system. She had been with one another guy before this, a touron visiting over the summer before sophomore year. But she never talked about it since she only did it to not be a virgin.
"Good, that means you're all mine," Rafe smirked and Cassie furrowed her brows for a second before she shook off whatever doubts she was having, allowing Rafe to crawl on top of her and kiss her again.
She allowed his hands to roam up and down her body before he took his own clothes off, bringing her to a situation that she had no idea she would be in that same morning.
