The Pogues had slept at the Château despite being nervous about Renfield and his archery goons, but none of them had anywhere else to go. And besides, if Limbrey got what she wanted — Denmark's key — would they even try to fuck with them further?

They had all been lying around on the porch, discussing last night's events at the Bonfire. "So, how did the fight with Topper even start?" Cassie inquired since she nor JJ had been around to see it.

John B shrugged. "Basically over Sarah because when is it not when it comes to me and Topper?"

Cassie hummed at that, knowing it was true.

"Did you see the way Cassie punched Kelce, though? That was pretty epic," JJ complimented and she glanced over at him, eyes twinkling.

"Unfortunately, I did not since I was busy trying to pry Topper away from John B," Pope replied.

"And I was busy trying to fight Topper," John B added. "I'm sure Kelce's face looks gnarly though."

Cassie breathed out, "It better."

The door to the porch suddenly opened and in came walking Sarah Cameron.

"Well, hello, Ms. Cameron," JJ greeted.

"What's up?" Kiara spoke up groggily on the couch, raising her beanie off of her eyes since she had still been resting as the others chatted before.

"Shouldn't you be on Figure Eight with your, uh, little group of polo players?" John B retorted, making Sarah grin sarcastically at him. "Or did you break up with Topper?" John B added with a fake, apprehensive smile.

"We're just friends," Sarah assured the boy, giving him a look.

"Oh, he's just a friend. You have a lot of friends, Sarah Cameron," John B commented.

"Yeah, and it seems like you've got some of your own, too," Sarah bit back and Cassie looked in between the couple as if it were a tennis match.

"All right, what are you doing here?" He groaned as he pushed up from his chair. "What do you want?"

The blonde sighed. "I'm here for Pope," she revealed, causing all of them to furrow their brows and look at her. She then turned to the boy.

"I think I found the Island Room."

After hearing that, they immediately got dressed and took the Twinkie to Sarah's which apparently housed the Island Room.

"Guys, listen to this," Pope voiced as they sat in the back of the Twinkie as John B drove. "The diary says the cross holds the most holy relic in all of Christendom, the Garment of the Savior," he said with the photocopy of the diary in his hands.

"So wait, he's saying there's a holy garment inside the cross?" Kiara questioned slowly.

"Yeah. It says the garment is capable of healing the sick from any malady," he told them.

"Mmm, yeah. 'If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well,'" JJ said casually, causing all of them to give him an odd look at how the hell he knew that. "What? I went to Sunday school."

"JJ Maybank went to Sunday school? Is that where you picked up all of your hobbies?" Cassie teased him.

"Oh, you would know, princess," he shot back before he realized what he said and what the others could think it meant. "B-because you're not very holy either."

That didn't make it sound any better.

Cassie gaped at him, wondering how he was so bad at keeping their "no label thing" on the low when he was so good at everything else that came with it. She looked around at the others, who were mostly giving JJ a weird look.

"I think you had a little too much green," Cassie came up with as she lightly patted him on the shoulder. "Think we should start taking it away."

"Yeah, you're right," Kiara agreed, giving the boy one last look at his weirdness.

"Anyway," Pope moved back on topic, "that explains why Limbrey would want the cross so bad. She thinks it can heal her."

"What else does it say?" Kiara inquired.

"'Many feel that we have sinned to steal such a sacred thing, and God will strike His vengeance on us,'" Pope read aloud.

"'His vengeance'? What does that mean?" Cassie asked.

"God already had His vengeance," Kiara told her and Cassie furrowed her brows, looking at Pope for the answer.

"He sent a hurricane to sink the ship. Only Denmark survived," Pope explained and they all went silent, processing what had just been said.

John B pulled the Twinkie up the Cameron household and they all stepped foot inside, looking around the place. Although Cassie had just been back here to witness the death of Ward Cameron, she actually hadn't been inside since she hooked up with Rafe Cameron.

She shuddered a bit at the memory.

"You good?" JJ whispered as they climbed up the stairs, noticing her demeanor and the way she looked uneasy.

She sucked in a breath. "Yeah. Just don't have fond memories here," she answered and JJ hummed in response, having a feeling he knew what she was referring to.

They reached the top of the steps and Sarah led them down a hallway, which was filled with very expensive looking items and trinkets.

"Whoo, holy shit," JJ breathed out as he looked around, running his hand along the items as he walked by them.

"This place still freaks me out," John B commented.

"Yeah, same," JJ agreed.

"You've never even been in here," Kiara pointed out.

"I didn't need to be. I can sense its murderous aura from anywhere. It calls to me," JJ responded rather dramatically and Kiara rolled her eyes.

"Who are you, Yoda?" Cassie made a face.

"JJ Maybank, I am, no," the blonde replied in his attempt at Yoda's accent, causing the blonde girl to laugh at him. He smiled a bit at the sound of her laugh before Sarah opened the door to the Island Room, directing his attention inside.

"Pope, look," Sarah said as she walked inside, following by the Heyward boy.

"Whoa! You've got to be kidding me," Pope spoke in awe as his eyes traveled around the room.

"Yeah. I know, right? It's the Island Room," Sarah told him with a smile.

The others walked in after, seeing the way the wallpaper had been ripped down to display painted images on the wall of different things such as houses, trees, boats, and the lighthouse.

"Holy shit," Cassie blurted out, her eyes widening as she took in the sight in front of her. This is definitely the Island Room, that's for sure.

"Incredible," John B muttered under his breath.

"It's been here this whole time," Sarah pointed out with a small chuckle.

"No freaking way."

"This definitely means something," JJ said as they all stepped further inside to take a look at different parts of the wall.

"This is incredible!"

"Yo, this is a map of the whole island," John B realized.

"Yeah, John B, I think you're right because this is Rixon's right here." JJ pointed to the part of the wall that showcases Rixon's. "And then, there's the lighthouse." He moved over toward the window, seeing the lighthouse on the wall and out the window in the same glance.

"Guys, look, Parcel 9 and the well," Kiara spoke up, her hands traveling over the image of it on the wall.

"That's a church," Cassie pointed to the other wall, squinting her eyes a bit since she wasn't sure if she had ever seen that church before.

"Okay, so, if that's Parcel 9, and then if that's Rixon's, then that's gotta be the surf break at Mase," John B pieced it together, pointing to the part of the wall with some houses and boats on it.

"Right. And look." JJ spread open the picture of the diary. "Pope, come here. This is Denmark's handwriting for sure," he pointed out, putting the picture next to the painting on the wall to show the handwriting.

"The drawings, they match up," Pope said aloud.

"Whoa," Cassie breathed out.

"Holy shit," John B whispered.

"Denmark, you genius!" Pope whisper-shouted. "These are all his drawings. He-he painted this entire room."

"Yeah, question is why. What's he trying to tell us?" Kiara asked as she kept running her hand over the paintings on the wall.

"It's gotta have something to do with the key, right? Right?" JJ guessed.

"Yeah, but what?" Kiara responded.

"That's what we gotta figure out," Cassie answered.

"How did you know to uncover this?" John B quizzed Sarah.

"I didn't. It was like this when I got home," she told him, making them look at her with puzzled expressions.

"What?"

"Okay, then who did it?"

"I don't know," Sarah answered truthfully.

"The freaks," someone said from behind them and they all jumped in fright, with JJ even putting his fists up, before they realized it had just been little Wheezie Cameron.

"Wheeze!" Sarah exclaimed, going over to the girl.

"Wait, what freaks are we talking about, Wheeze?" JJ asked her, lowering his clenched fists.

"Uh, that sick lady and her attack dog. They-they showed up last night, and they wanted to talk to Rafe," Wheezie detailed and Cassie quickly tapped JJ's arm with the back of her hand, knowing exactly who Wheezie was talking about.

"Wait. Pale blonde lady?" JJ assumed and Wheezie nodded.

"She have crutches?" Cassie added.

"Uh-huh," Wheezie confirmed.

"It's gotta be Limbrey," Pope said gruffly.

Cassie released a groan. "Why does this bitch have to be everywhere?"

"Cassie, language!" Kiara gestured over to Wheezie.

"Whoops. It just slipped out."

"That's what she said."

"JJ!" Both girls scolded him, gesturing to Wheezie once again.

"I'm not a baby!" Wheezie argued, crossing her arms.

"Okay, wh-wh-what happened last night?" John B stuttered quickly out of anticipation on wanting to know what went down with Limbrey.

"Well, first, they searched the whole house looking for something, and then Rafe told me to go upstairs. But I didn't wanna miss out, so I listened through the grate," she began before she went on to tell them how Rafe showed Limbrey and Renfield the hole he punched in the wall, which was how they started ripping the whole wallpaper off to reveal the painting underneath. "And then they were talking about getting across the sand flamingo."

"Sand flamingo?" Cassie reiterated as she tilted her head.

"That's code. That's code for something," JJ immediately assumed and Sarah gave him a look.

"The cross," Pope realized and JJ made an 'O' shape with his mouth. "The Cross of Santo Domingo?" Pope talked a little slower for Wheezie to understand.

"Yeah, that's it," she confirmed, making Pope and John B share a look. "Oh, and they were talking about, like, angels. A lot of angel talk. I don't know."

"Angels?" John B repeated quietly.

Cassie met eyes with Pope before the both of them recalled what Limbrey had told them. "Denmark's famous last words," they said at the same time and everyone looked toward them.

"He buried the real treasure at the foot of the angel," Cassie reminded them.

Pope nodded quickly. "They're looking for an angel. We have to find the angel in the room."

"Start looking, start looking," JJ urged swiftly.

"Spread out," Kiara instructed.

"The church is over here," Sarah pointed, going over to it.

"Yeah, I saw that before. Check the church," Cassie pointed at it.

"Yeah, check the church," John B agreed as he looked at a different wall.

Cassie made her over next to JJ since the wall he had been looking at was a bigger one. "Wait, could this be an angel?" He asked excitedly.

"That's a bird, Jay."

"Oh...But like-like the wings—"

"It's a bird."

"Damn it."

Cassie continued to search the wall as everyone started shouting different things at each other, Wheezie joining into the mix since she had no idea what was going on.

She didn't even realize JJ had moved away from her and onto a different wall before he shouted, "Hey, yo, hey! Hey! Guys! I think I found something!"

They all turned their heads to the blonde boy, going over to him.

"Come here. This humongous tree is still on Goat Island." JJ pressed his finger against the picture of the large tree. "And you know what it's called?"

"Angel Oak," Pope realized.

"Hey, look right there. There's the keyhole," JJ pointed out, running his finger along the keyhole.

"Wait..." John B trailed off.

"That means that the cross is buried at the foot of the angel. He didn't mean an actual angel, he meant the Angel Oak," Pope spelled out as JJ mouthed the same thing at the same time while looking at Pope. "That must be where he put it. That must be where they are right now! We have to go!"

"I think I'm Sherlock Holmes, all right? You're welcome, by the way!" JJ exclaimed proudly as they all hurried out of the room.

"Yeah. Hurry up, Sherlock."

John B drove the Twinkie to Goat Island where Angel Oak was. On the way, Pope took note of Freedman's Church, the church that Denmark built for all the slaves that he freed.

"There it is, Angel Oak," Kiara pointed out, seeing the tree behind the tall grass since it was so large.

John B drove the Twinkie further into the area before he realized, "Oh, shit. Tide's coming in." He went further into the area that had been really muddy. "Um..." John B trailed off, slowing the car down.

"Hey, wait a second. Look. Hey, they already came through here," Pope pointed out once he saw the tire marks through the mud. "Those have to be Limbrey's tire tracks."

"Of course they are," Cassie muttered, sharing an annoyed look with Kiara and Sarah.

"Guys, we gotta go," Pope urged.

"Mmm, what do you think, chief?" JJ queried to John B.

"I'm think it's looking a little dicey," he replied.

"Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree with that statement."

"Yeah."

"Okay, well, clearly, they made it," Kiara pointed out from the back. "No?"

"In a two-wheel drive? I don't know about that," JJ argued with squinted eyes as he examined the road ahead of them.

"Why are y'all acting like you're not gonna do it anyways?" Sarah questioned with a grin. "Like when have y'all ever done the safe thing?"

JJ and John B shared a look before the latter said, "She's got a point."

"Alright. Speed is your friend here, okay? So, put her down in a second and hammer down, brother," JJ explained as everyone got ready to hold onto something just in case things went awry.

"Stick to the high ground in the middle," Pope told him.

"All right, ready? Here we go," John B said before he stomped down on the gas pedal, making Twinkie speed through the mud. Cassie felt herself lurch and she gripped the side of the Twinkie, keeping herself up.

"Come on, bro! Punch it! Speed is your friend, speed is your friend!" JJ yelled as John B continued to go through the mud. "You're not going fast enough!"

"I'm in second!" John B responded.

"It's gonna slide!"

"You're fishtailing already!"

"Yeah, I know!" John B laughed.

"All right, not to put any more pressure on you, but if you don't make it through, we'll be stuck here forever," Pope cautioned him seriously.

"Put your head back, okay?" John B said as he pushed Pope's head back just as they made it through the bad part and got to the other side safely.

They all began to whoop. "We're alive!" Kiara breathed out.

"I'm shocked," Cassie voiced.

"See, I told you we'd make it," John B said to them, but mostly to Pope.

"That's my girl," JJ gushed and Cassie felt her heart skip a beat even though he wasn't even talking to her. Am I really that down bad?

"Okay, right here, right here," JJ instructed for John B to park the Twinkie. "Angel Oak is right through here. All right, so word to the wise," he continued as he opened the back door to let the others out, "definitely know that gators nest back here, so keep your eyes peeled, okay? You don't wanna step on a mama gator. That's the last thing you wanna have happen."

"They have nests?" Kiara questioned, sharing a wary glance with the Blake girl.

"Seems like a good place to park," Sarah commented sarcastically as JJ picked up a long stick.

"All right, you don't wanna be a Pat Womack. She had her calf chewed off by a gator, right?" The blonde boy brought up. "You know that, right?"

"Is that really true?" Cassie asked him, not sure if she should believe him when he always exaggerated his stupid stories. She knew him by now.

"Oh, yeah."

"That's actually not true," Kiara piped up and Cassie gave JJ a look. "Pat Womack was injured in a car accident, but I hear you."

"Okay, just live in ignorance. But like, she had her calf chewed off by a mama gator. I know that for a fact," he continued. "They like the brackish water. Hey, wait, hold on. I see something."

"What are you doing?" Kiara questioned when he began to crouch down.

He slapped the water with the stick he picked up.

"Dude," Cassie shook her head at him.

"Right. Wake them up. That's smart," Sarah encouraged sardonically.

"No, I was just making sure it wasn't a gator. That's all, all right?" JJ defended himself.

"I hope one comes out and bites you," Cassie told him, mimicking a gator biting his arm with her hand.

"Oh, yeah? Not if it bites you first," he challenged as he did the same thing as her, causing the both of them to pretend bite each other with their hands.

"Guys!" Kiara and Sarah halted them, making them look over.

"Can y'all not fight for, like, five seconds?" Kiara pleaded as she walked past them.

"Yeah, seriously," Sarah shook her head, hanging back since John B was still behind them.

Cassie and JJ shared a look since they definitely were not fighting, but if it had looked that way to them, then perfect!

"Only if he goes five seconds without pissing me off," Cassie countered as she began to follow Kiara, giving JJ a wink that both girls couldn't see.

He grinned. "Hey, you bit me first," JJ pointed out as he followed behind her, making Sarah roll her eyes at the two's antics.

Once they got closer to Angel Oak, Pope shushed them all since he heard the sounds of people talking and machines whirring.

"I don't see shit. You sure this is the right spot?" Cassie heard someone say and she felt her stomach drop, immediately knowing who it was.

Rafe Cameron.

She hadn't seen the boy since Peterkin's funeral, where her mother forced her to go. It's not that she didn't want to pay respects to Peterkin, she just didn't want to be surrounded by people who believed John B was the cause for these respects being paid.

The two didn't talk at the funeral, but when they accidentally made eye contact, Cassie made it clear that he was going to pay for what he did with just her eyes.

She hoped he got the message.

"Hey!" JJ called them all over quietly as they hid behind a bush, seeing Rafe, Limbrey, and Renfield along with other men working with an excavator to dig the cross out of the ground.

At the foot of the angel.

"It's there. The garment will be in the cross, and the cross will be at the door of the tree," Limbrey assured Rafe.

"All right, well, whatever we find, I get my cut," Rafe reminded the older woman.

"The actual garment. You understand the significance," Limbrey said to Renfield.

"I do, Carla. Completely," Renfield replied as he took a folded chair out of the back of his car. The one he used to chase Cassie, Pope, Kiara, and JJ in Charleston. Cassie's lip curled, wanting nothing more than to just slash those stupid tires.

And Rafe's for good measure.

"One touch of it, and I'll be healed, and this long nightmare will be over," Limbrey explained.

"Your lips to God's ears," Renfield said with sarcasm laced in his tone.

"I know that you don't believe it, but countless stories over millennia prove that..." She sighed happily as she sat down in the chair Renfield put down for her, "...miracles happen."

The excavator went to go dig into the hole again before it seemed to hit something. "Hey, wait! Stop! Stop! Please stop! Did you hear it?" Limbrey shouted, holding her arm up. "Hey, get in there, boys. Do it by hand," Limbrey instructed as she began to get up from her seat. "Oh. This has gotta be the cross."

The men working with them hopped inside the hole and the Pogues all shared a glance, not knowing what was inside since they were too far away. "It's smaller than I thought," Limbrey pointed out with a gentle laugh. "It looks like a—"

"Casket," Rafe cut her off.

"He put it in a casket," Limbrey realized with a breathless laugh. "Denmark put it in a casket. Get it up."

"Let's go," Renfield said to the men before they began to pick up the casket and hand it to him and Rafe.

"They got the cross. What do we do? What do we do?" JJ questioned through clenched teeth, his eyes wide.

"What can we do?" John B replied quickly, grabbing JJ's arm and pushing it down since he had held it out.

Rafe and Renfield placed the casket on the ground, groaning from how heavy it was. "Be careful," Limbrey warned.

The two men grabbed crossbars to open the casket. "Don't touch anything inside! Don't touch anything inside!" Limbrey said frantically right before they were able to open it up.

The Pogues excepted them to all start cheering and laughing, but when that didn't happen, they all shared confused glances.

"It's just a corpse," Rafe commented and Cassie blinked at that, sharing a look with Kiara.

"Sorry, Carla," Renfield apologized gruffly as Rafe wiped at his lip, his jaw slack.

The Pogues watched as Rafe complained and Limbrey started saying how they got the wrong place, making her force them all to pack up and leave to go back to the Island Room.

"What do we do?" Cassie whispered once they drove off, but no one answered as Pope already started to make his way through the bushes.

"Pope. Pope, wait! Wait! Shit." Pope kept running until he made it up to the casket. "Wait, wait, yo..."

He bent down towards it.

"Cecilia Tanny...Denmark's wife."

He got up, slowly nearing the large tree.

"He wasn't talking about the cross. He buried her at the foot of the angel," Pope's voice wavered as he looked up at the tree.

The Pogues all watched Pope step toward the tree, their eyes glistening in awe mixed with sorrow. Denmark buried his wife at the foot of the angel which was, "The true treasure," Kiara spoke up.

"His wife," John B breathed out, his stare on the open casket. Cassie looked down at it, seeing the dust and bones inside. She sucked in her lip, looking back over at Pope.

Pope walked over and crouched down next to the casket, releasing a choked gasp. The rest of the Pogues crouched down around him, supporting him through this. This was his relative. Even though he had only just found about it, that didn't make it hurt any less. Especially since Limbrey and her cronies dug up Cecilia's grave without an ounce of respect.

"Denmark was hung for burying his wife, and now they defiled her grave," Pope said gruffly and Kiara placed a hand on his arm to try to comfort him.

Pope reached into the casket and took out a piece of a necklace that was inside that had Cecilia's name on it. Cassie frowned at it, looking at Pope sadly.

Sarah took out a dust covered ring. "This must have been from Denmark," she said with a sad smile. "Her wedding ring." Sarah then looked over at John B, locking eyes with the boy for a few moments before they glanced away.

Sarah put the ring back into the casket as Pope put the piece of the necklace back inside. "We can't leave her like this," he said shakily.

"We won't," John B assured him before he looked at JJ, who nodded. He and JJ got up and recovered the casket, nailing it back into place once again.

Pope picked some white flowers and placed them on top of the casket to commemorate her.

The Pogues then got to work on reburying the casket like it was supposed to be. Cecilia deserved to be left the way Denmark wanted her to be left.

At the foot of the angel.

Once JJ was done tapping the last piece of dirt over the casket, he walked over and placed the shovel against the tree. Cassie walked up beside him, giving him a lopsided frown to which he returned.

Pope sputtered, "I-I just don't get it. I mean, you guys saw the map. He hides his gold so no one finds it for 170 years. And then he sends a message to his son Robert to come here to his mother's grave, but the message never gets to him. And Denmark wanted him to find the cross. I know we're in the right spot. It just feels like—"

"Like we missed something?" JJ cut him off, looking up at the tree with his eyes at one spot. "Guys. Come here." He began to climb up the Twinkie that John B had driven closer before to get to the trunk of the tree. Cassie went after him, hopping up on the Twinkie behind him. He pointed to hole in the trunk and her eyes widened. "That looks like—"

"The painting in the Island Room," Cassie finished before the two of them looked down at the others who stayed on the ground.

"It's worth a shot, right?" JJ said, raising his brows.

"Yeah," Kiara said from below.

"Let's do it."

"Go for it," JJ said to Cassie, placing his hand on the small of her back to push her forward.

"No way," Cassie replied, fighting against his hand on her back.

"You do it!" Sarah called out, giving JJ a look.

"Who was the one that went in the storm drain and almost died?" Cassie pointed out, giving JJ a look.

"She did go in the storm drain," Pope sided with her.

"Yeah. No, I'm gonna do it. It's just..." JJ trailed off, waving his hand around to try and avoid actually putting it in the hole.

"He's scared," Kiara teased.

"I'm not scared, dude. It's just..."

"You seem scared," Cassie agreed with Kiara, the girls sharing a grin.

JJ released a sigh before he slowly stuck his hand in the hole. "There's something in here." His hand went deeper and he chuckled, "Wait." Suddenly, though, JJ began to scream out in pain, trying to pull his arm out.

The Pogues all shouted in fear and concern as Cassie gripped JJ's brown jacket, trying to pull him out. "Jay, come here!" She screamed before JJ loosened up, laughing like an idiot.

"Oh, you asshole," Pope insulted.

"Oh, man! I got all of you on that one," JJ said as he continued to laugh.

"Oh, yeah, real original," Pope commented sarcastically.

"I'm gonna fucking kill you!" Cassie seethed as she shoved the boy, making his shoulder bang into the tree.

"Hey, ow!"

"If that tree doesn't claw your arm off, I will," Cassie threatened and he gave her a wide-eyed look.

"So, JJ getting killed makes you wanna kill him? I think that pretty much sums up their relationship," Sarah gestured to them, causing the others to laugh.

Cassie and JJ shared a look before he turned his head back to the hole. "Wait, but seriously, there's something in here," he told them. He reached in and pulled something cylindrical out.

"Let me see it," Pope said and JJ handed it down to him. "'HMS Royal Merchant,'" Pope read as JJ hopped down from the van. Cassie sat down on top of the Twinkie, examining from above.

"Give it to the captain," JJ said breathlessly as he took it out of Pope's hands. "Here we go." He extended it further, shutting one of his eyes and putting the other one up to the circular part at the top. "It's a spyglass."

"There's something on the ends," Cassie realized since she had been above to see it.

John B twisted it even more, revealing some writing. "An inscription right there. Look at that shit."

"Oh, what does it say?" JJ asked excitedly.

"'You've come this far. Do not falter. The cross is on the Freedman's altar,'" Pope read aloud, making all of their eyes widen. "'Freedman's altar.' The cross is at the church!"

"What are we doing here, guys?" JJ questioned loudly as he looked around at all of them.

"Come on! We got it!" Pope exclaimed.

"Woogity-woogity!"
