Chapter 3

“Hey kiddo how are ya feeling.” Patton cooed from behind the door. After Virgil had his panic attack Patton decided he would let him calm down with his music for a bit. He was only coming to him now because his worry had gotten the better of him.

“I- I’m fine now Pat. I-I’m sorry to make you worry.” YOU ALWAYS MAKE HIM WORRIED. YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A BURDEN. YOU ARE SO SELFISH. HE WOULD BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT YOU. But, Patton would be sad if I went away.... HE WOULD HAVE BEEN FINE IF HE HADN’T MET YOU. YOU ONLY MAKE TROUBLE FOR HIM. Virgil felt his breath quicken. He didn’t need this right now it would only cause more problems for Patton. He quickly tried to calm himself down.

Patton could hear the tremor in Virgil’s voice and decided he would change the subject. “I am about to make dinner for us Virge. Is there anything in particular that you want?”

Virgil thought for a moment. He didn’t think he wanted to eat but then heard his stomach growl. He hadn't eaten anything all day. Patton was sure to have noticed this. He knew Patton was going to make sure he ate something. “Um, spaghetti.”

Patton beamed at the idea. He knew that spaghetti was Virgil’s favorite. He would also have to make some garlic bread with extra garlic. It would help cheer Virgil up. “Okey Dokey! Can do my dark, strange son!” Patton dashed off to start dinner. Virgil listened as Patton skipped down the hallway. Virgil let out a sigh. He fell back down onto his bed. He laid there for a minute in silence. Knowing that Patton was occupied with making dinner set Virgil’s mind at ease. He would be too occupied with cooking to spend a lot of time worrying about him. HE WOULD STILL WORRY THOUGH. Virgil flinched at the thought. Shut up... Virgil quickly sat up and swung his legs off the bed. He took a deep breath to calm himself down.

It suddenly hit Virgil that he never took his bath, and he still absolutely reeked. He needed to at least wash up some before dinner. He got up shakely from his bed. After what he saw this morning he was not looking forward to going into that room again. He slowly walked out of his room into the hallway. Despite the fact that Virgil was on the top floor and Patton was on the bottom floor he could hear the light hearted man moving about the kitchen. Shifting around pots and pans as he is singing very loudly to himself. Virgil can hear what sounds like the song Anything You Can Do  I Can Do Better. Virgil can’t help but smile as Patton tries to keep up with the song. Patton is trying to sing the man's part and the woman's part and is failing miserably.  Virgil is listening so intently to Patton that he doesn’t realize that he has already arrived at the door to the bathroom. When his thoughts catch up to his location he doesn’t move. He stares at the door for a few minutes. He isn’t even really sure why. Does he expect some horrible monster to be waiting on the other side of the door? Finally he works up the courage and opens the door. He peers into the room glancing quickly at the tub. All clear, nothing seems wrong. He walks in and decides he is going to just take a quick shower. He doesn’t think a bath is a good idea. One, dinner will be ready before the tub even fills, and two, he is not sure what will actually come out of the faucet, and he really doesn’t want to take the chance.

Virgil closes the door behind him. He leaves it unlocked because he knows Patton won’t be barging in on him unless there was some sort of emergency. Virgil looks down at his shirt and groans. It is absolutely filthy he has probably worn if for a whole week now. He really needed to manage his laundry better. After bilittling himself for a few seconds about his horrendous hygiene and how it makes Patton worry even more he finally peeled his shirt off. Once he shed his shirt and turned and looked in the mirror…

He would of screamed but his voice completely failed him. His body was covered in claw marks. With sharp painful looking gouges. He just stood there in shock before looking down at himself. There wasn’t a scratch on him. He looked back up at himself in the mirror and still there clear as day were the deep gashes. He stood there in confusion. Just looking back and forth between himself and his reflection. He was looking at his reflection when he suddenly noticed something morphing from his shadow behind him. It slowly morphed into a grinning shadow with glowing eyes. Virgil let out a small yelp. The shadow quickly raised it finger to it lips, or at least what Virgil assumed were his lips. Shhhh, we wouldn’t want to worry Patton now would we? Virgil quickly silenced himself. He turned around to face he figure behind him but when he turned around no one was there. He turned back to face the mirror. The figure still loomed over Virgil’s shoulder. Virgil’s whole body is shaking now. What the hell is happening?  Easy there Virge, I am here to help you. I am here to… relieve your pain. The voice sends a chill down his spine. The words aren’t coming from any direction. They slowly spiral around Virgil. It’s okay Virgil, everything will be okay if you do as I say. I can make all the bad go away. I promise. Virgil slowly feels his shoulders relax as the voice comforts him. All the sudden Virgil can’t remember why he was afraid before.  That’s it Virgil just listen to me. I can make everything better. You will never feel alone again. With me you will never be alone. Virgil suddenly tenses again. I’m not alone I have Patton.  You are only a problem to him. He is just too nice to say anything. I can help you though. I can make everything better. Just forget about him he is better of you do. The words circle Virgil. The cold feeling he had before slipped away. He felt warm and comfortable. The weight that he had felt on his shoulders for years went away. See, your already feeling better. Just listen to me. At this point Virgil could no longer think of any reason not to do what this voice said. The voice made sense all he had to do was what it said and everything would be fine. He never had to worry about being a burden for.. what was his name again… well must not be important if he couldn’t even remember. That’s it Virgil. The voice cooed gently. The shadow figure then moved and placed it’s dark hand on Virgil’s wrist. The hand moved Virgil’s hand until it rested on top of a razor. Virgil froze. Was the shadow going to ask what he thinks it was going to ask? Vigil I think it would be best if you just used that to end it all. But I don’t want to die. It’ll be okay, Virge. I promise. You promise? I promise. Okay, I trust you. The shadow grinned. Perfect. Virgil then picked up the razor and placed it to his wrist. He winced slightly as small drops of blood started to form...
