Chapter 1
Soft moonlight fell upon alabaster skin. Leaving the dark creature surrounded in a halo of light. Roman watched over his Ward with great fascination. He observed his soft features usually strained with concern relaxed in his slumber. Roman beats his large wings softly as he hovers above the bed, shifting the air around the young man as he lies in bed. Moving his hair ever so slightly.
Roman worries for him, because despite his peaceful appearance he still sees deep dark circles under his eyes. This was one of the few nights Virgil had slept in a long time. The only reason he was asleep now was because he had passed out from exhaustion. Roman wished there was more he could do as his Guardian but because he was still young and new to the job all he could do was observe. He had waited for years to be paired with his Ward. So that he could swoop in and rescue them and soar them straight into happiness. Roman longed to be someone's prince in shining armor, but there were rules he had to follow. Number 1 don’t let your Ward see you, ever. Number 2 don’t let your Ward die, if they die your light will go out too. Number 3 help in subtle ways that do not make your presence known. Number 4 do not fall in love with your Ward. Roman had never understood the last one when he first learned the rules. How could a Guardian fall in love with their Ward if they couldn’t even interact with them. However, looking down now at this delicate and fragile creature before him alight with an unearthly glow of the moon it didn’t seem quite as far fetched. Regarding to the third rule you can help your Ward but when it comes to their own mental struggles there wasn't much a Guardian could do. Just try to keep them safe.
As Roman watches Virgil he gets so lost in his observation that he doesn't watch what his wings are doing and one brushes across one of Virgil's books shelves. Sending an array of books crashing to the floor.
“Damn it!” Roman whispers to himself knowing how light a sleeper Virgil is. Roman doesn’t hesitate to see if it woke Virgil. He just assume it has and he darts out the open window out into the night. He mentally curses himself because he knows Virgil needed this sleep and now he won’t relax for a long time.
----------
Virgil wakes with a start. Eyes flying around the room. It took him a moment to take in his surroundings in the dim lit room. His eyes finally settled on a large pile of his books on the floor. “What the hell?...” he pauses what could have done that? He knew those books were on his shelf when he came into his room. “...Um, Hello, he says into the darkness.” He says into the darkness feeling stupid even as he does so. No one could be in his room. He knows he locked his door to his room and he was on the third floor of the building so there was no coming in through the window. THE WINDOW. It was open virgil could have sworn he had closed it when coming into his room because he had felt cold. It now was wide open. Virgil's stomach did a flip. What if some crazy axes murdering person had somehow scaled the wall and was in his room with him right now watching him.
Calm down Virge don’t be ridiculous what would a murder want to do with you, he reminded himself. But what if you pissed of the wrong person. Who could I have pissed of I can’t even talk to people. That's because you are pathetic and week. You make yourself miserable to get attention from others. YOU ARE SO SELFISH. Maybe it would be a good thing if someone was in here. Then you would get the attention you always wanted. You are pathetic scared of your own shadow. You can’t do anything right. Virgil felt the voices swirl around him. He felt the panic well up inside him. He curled in on himself covering his ears with his hands trying to block out the voices. He just wanted the voices to stop arguing and leave him alone. The fear of some axe murderer subsided to the other things welling up inside him. He sat curled up alone on his bed with nothing but darkness around him. The moon that once illuminated the room had now been blocked by a dark thunder cloud.
--------
Roman watched through the window from his perch on a nearby tree as the young man shrunk in on himself. Damn it he had one job and he had to go and mess everything up.
AN: I know this chapter is seriously crap but it gets better I swear. At least I hope it does.
