Chapter 1 - The letter

I looked at the letter again.

"Please report to Santa Fe, New Mexico for guardian angel duty on January 1, 2018. You have been assigned to Roger Adams and will be relieved of duty on December 31, 2018."

"This has to be a mistake," I said to myself. "How am I supposed to help anyone. This is a job for those fru-fru generic angels."

Gathering my thoughts I threw on my cloak and headed down to the office.

"Morning Mortimer," Angela, the big man's secretary said to me as I walked in.

"Morning," I said. "Is He here?"

"Oh yes," she said. "He said he was expecting a visit from you today, had me block out the while first hour in his schedule."

"So, can I..."

"Go on in." She turned and pressed her finger to the intercom. "Mortimer is here to see you dear," she said to it.

I didn't wait for His reply and instead walked straight into his office, my summons letter in hand. "This has to be a mistake," I said as I put the letter on His desk.

"Oh there is no mistake," He said. "Mortimer, you know it is every angel's civic duty to go on guardian angel duty at least once."

"Yes but sir," I said, not wanting to talk back but seeing no other option. "I don't see how I'm really cut out for this."

"You are an angel," He said, "are you not?"

"Well yes but-"

"Then you have to do it."

I paused, unsure how to approach the subject further. "But don't you think I'll scare them?"

"Well if that is the case and you are unable to perform your duties you will be reassigned. Are we through here?"

"Yes sir."

"Good. As your letter says, you will report for duty on the first of the new year. If you wish you may come to the optional training later this week, your session meeting time should be on your letter as well."

I took another look at my letter. There were three more dates listed, their descriptions being "protection from physical harm," "dealing with the psychologically hurt," and "you and your guard-child; making a good first impression."

"Yes sir, I see them."

"Good. I will speak to you later. Goodbye Mortimer."

"Goodbye sir," I said. I turned to go, thinking over the training dates in my head. The 21nd, 23rd, and 25th. It seemed as though I had already missed the first session, perhaps my letter got stuck in the mail, but I was mainly concerned for the third. Good thing I never liked Christmas much to begin with.
