~Ch. XXXVII~

The five friends watched the magitek engine fly away. Ardyn had dropped them off at the Chocobo Post. They were stranded without the Regalia, which had been left back at the Disc.

Noctis gave a sigh. "Now we have to go back and get the car."

"Or we could simply ask Cindy for a favor," Gladio suggested. "She could have it towed out here to us."

"Need I remind you that the empire has the Disc cut off," Ignis cut in. "Unless they've removed their blockade, Cindy won't be able to reach the Regalia."

"Well we've gotta think of something," Noctis replied. "We can't leave the car."

Ryella wobbled on her feet and tiredly rested her head against Prompto's shoulder. She weakly held onto his arm to keep herself balanced. The blond looked down at her, noticing how weary she was. She leaned against him, causing a faint blush to creep across his freckled cheeks.

"Hey, guys? While you figure out what to do, I'll take Ryella to the caravan to rest up."

Their gazes shifted to the half-conscious girl. "Alright," the prince responded. "Take care of her now."

Prompto nodded in response. He wrapped an arm firmly around her waist and turned her around. He carefully walked her over to the caravan, keeping her on her feet whenever she stumbled or tripped. He hadn't expected her to be so tired. When her energy was drained, it completely exhausted her. She barely said a word and relied heavily on the boy to guide her. Prompto helped her up the steps and into the room. He took her over to a bed and sat her down. She almost immediately fell back onto the pillow.

"How are you feeling?" the gunman inquired.

"Tired..." she mumbled in response.

"You can nap for a bit if you want."

She weakly nodded. "I think...I will..." Prompto turned to leave when the girl abruptly called, "Wait." The boy looked back at her questioningly. "Don't leave..."

He laughed lightly. "Don't worry, I was just gonna go grab a bite and then come right back. You want me to bring you something?"

"Yes, please... Just something light."

Prompto gave a playful wink. "You got it."

He hurried back out, leaving the girl to herself. It grew silent within the caravan. Ryella rolled onto her side, curling up. She hoped that with a little snack and a bit of rest, she'd regain some of her strength. She wanted to wait for Prompto's return, but found it difficult to keep her eyes open. She nestled into the collar of the gunman's vest wrapped around her, enjoying the warmth and the familiar scent of him. It made her feel so cozy that she ended up dozing off. Before long, Prompto returned. He energetically burst through the door with a bag of Gysahl Chips in hand. He was about to call out that he was back, but he stopped himself when he saw the Guardian sound asleep. He went to her side, placing the chips on the table beside the bed.

"Aww," he quietly cooed.

He took a moment to take in her beauty. She looked extremely cute, especially when she wore something of his. His gaze paused at her thighs, where the edges of the flannel attached under the vest rested. His eyes widened, and he gulped at the way it came up farther than normal. When Ryella had rolled over, it caused the flannel to come up. It left little to the imagination. The fact that she had nothing on underneath is what really got the boy's mind wandering to things it shouldn't.

He was quick to shake the naughty thoughts out of his head. He bent down and slowly reached his hand out, gently taking the edges of the flannel between his fingers. His hand grazed her smooth skin as he tugged the material down, better covering her. He sighed with relief that the girl was in a deep enough sleep to not awaken from the contact. He then looked up at her face where her nose and mouth were buried in the vest's collar and her hair hung down over her eye and cheek. Prompto moved his hand up, lightly brushing her soft, brown locks out of her face.

That caused the girl to nuzzle the material of his vest and mumble, "Prompto..."

The blond was taken aback. His blue eyes grew wide and his face flushed. His heart nearly skipped a beat upon hearing her say his name. A goofy grin made its way to his lips as he stared down at the girl. Is she...dreaming about me? He found himself automatically snatching up his camera. He angled and focused it on her sleeping form, but paused before clicking the button. Wait...is it wrong to take pictures of a girl like this? Or does that only apply to stalkers? He mentally groaned. I don't wanna miss the opportunity! She looks sooo adorable! He gave in and swiftly snapped a shot, then put his camera away, just in time too, as the door suddenly opened.

"Ugh, what are we supposed to do?!"

The prince's whiny complaint made Ryella jolt up with surprise. "Apologies," Ignis said, noticing the female startled from her slumber. "Slipped our minds that you might be sleeping."

Ryella tiredly yawned and shook her head. "No, it's okay." She looked up at Prompto standing by her. "How long was I asleep?"

The gunman glanced at the nearby clock. "Only about half an hour. You feel any better yet?"

"A little. At least enough to eat."

Prompto took the chip bag off the table, ripped it open, and handed it to her. She gently grabbed a chip between her fingers and slipped it into her mouth. She crunched it up, tasting the unique gysahl flavor. It wasn't too bad, certainly not her favorite snack, but it was alright. She continued eating while the boys sat down.

"So," Gladio began, "we got word that the car's no longer where we left it."

Though still groggy, Ryella was now better able to comprehend the gravity of the situation. "That means our ride's gone...along with everything that's in the trunk." She suddenly gasped. "My lyre! And my pendant! We...we have to find the Regalia! Our thing's are all in there!"

"Don't sweat it, we'll get her back," the blond assured.

"We've already contacted Cindy about the matter," Ignis told them. "She's looking into it as we speak. In the meantime, I suggest we find you some proper attire, Ryella. You can't keep walking around like that."

The girl's cheeks turned pink and she nervously tugged the flannel down to make sure she was covered. "Y-yeah, I guess you're right. Will they have anything at the shop here?"

"Dunno," the shield replied. "Won't hurt to check."

Ryella slowly got up. "I'll go have a look."

Once she'd left the caravan, Prompto sighed. "So, what do we do about the car?"

"We do what we can to track her down," Noctis replied. "Ryella can act as transportation for now."

Prompto hummed lightly. "It's great having a Guardian on our side."

"Especially for you," the tattooed man quietly added.

"Her wings won't be of much use to us though," Ignis explained. "We haven't a clue as to where the Regalia is. It would be futile to fly about in hopes of simply finding it lying around. As much as I loathe the idea, our best bet is to wait until Cindy gets back to us."

Noctis sighed. "Sounds like we could be here awhile."

The caravan door suddenly opened and in walked Ryella. She had on a completely new outfit consisting of a red crop top, a tan long-sleeved jacket, off-white shorts, and black knee-high boots.

(This is the outfit)

"That was fast," Gladio commented, looking her over. "Cute clothes."

With Prompto's vest in her arms, she hugged it self-consciously. "Th-this was about all they had. I don't normally wear things like this. It makes me feel...uncomfortable, but it'll have to do. I probably look silly more than anything."

"Nah." Noctis waved a hand dismissively. "You look fine."

"You wear those clothes quite nicely, in fact," Ignis added with sincerity.

The brunette blushed. "Oh, th-thanks." She shyly approached Prompto, holding out his vest for him. "And thank you for allowing me to borrow this."

"Hey, that's what friends do." The blond politely took his vest and slipped it back on. "Not like we can let you do without clothes."

With his vest out of the way, Prompto couldn't keep his eyes from traveling down over her body. Fortunately, she had turned her head to look at Gladio as he gave her a small compliment, not noticing the way the gunman looked at her. It reminded him of the time Ryella had dressed like Cindy at Hammerhead, it was one of the rare times she wore something more revealing. His gaze paused briefly at her chest, where the very tops of her breasts were exposed. His eyes kept going, stopping at her stomach. For some reason, he found the exposed skin around her navel sexy. His gaze moved further down to where her shorts came up around her thighs. All in all, she was a picture of perfection in his eyes.

He was quick to smile innocently and look up at her face as soon as she turned her attention back to him. "So, um, what are we going to do now?" she inquired.

Noctis sighed. "For now, wait. Cindy's trying to track down the Regalia."

"Want me to have a look around from the air?" the girl asked.

"That won't be necessary," the bespectacled man chimed in. "It would be a waste of energy for you to fly around with only a slim chance of spotting the Regalia."

Ryella took a seat beside Prompto. "Alright, then."

"Hey, who's up for some King's Knight?" Gladio abruptly asked, changing the subject.

Noctis was quick to answer, "You're on."

"What exactly is 'King's Knight' anyway?" the female asked, hearing them mention it several times before.

"It's a game we play on our phones," Prompto explained. "You can watch if you want." He dug his phone out of his pocket and immediately clicked on the game. Ryella leaned over his shoulder to see everything on the screen. "See? That's my character."

"Aww," she cooed. "He's so cute! And tiny!"

The blond laughed. "You think so? He's a good fighter too."

"Not as good as mine," the shield boasted. "I usually kick your ass."

"Let us begin the battle, then we'll see who truly stands on top," Ignis interrupted, a devious smirk on his lips.

The digital fight had begun. Each of the boys were rapidly tapping the buttons on their screens, initiating constant combo attacks. Ryella found herself mesmerized by the virtual battle. Her eyes were wide with amazement, and she watched everything happening on the game. She leaned heavily on the boy beside her, resting her chin on his shoulder. Prompto became a flustered mess at the close contact. He began messing up his button presses and had his health dropping at twice the normal speed. He was the first one out.

He groaned in frustration while Gladio laughed, glancing up from his screen. "What's the matter, Prompto? Can't keep your focus with a lady looking over your shoulder?"

Ryella was quick to scoot away from the gunman. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to distract you."

"N-no, you didn't!" Prompto stuttered out. "I mean, it's harder to concentrate when someone's looking over my shoulder... B-but it's fine, really!"

"Still, I messed you up. I'm really sorry."

Prompto's mind raced for an argument. He didn't want Ryella to feel bad about it, and he also didn't want her to keep a distance. Though she did distract him, he wanted to feel her closer anyway. Her fascination with a simple video game was cute, and he wanted to see more of her adorable expressions while he played.

"Really, it's fine. Seeing the faces you make the whole time you're watching makes up for losing."

That made the girl blush with embarrassment. "I-I wasn't aware that I m-made any faces..."

"Indeed you did," Ignis said with a small chuckle. "It was quite amusing."

After finishing the round, Noctis had a new idea. "If you're so interested in video games, why don't you play one?"

Ryella blinked at him with surprise. "M-me? But I've never played a game before."

The prince waved a hand dismissively. "It's a piece of cake. I'll show you." Noctis tapped on his phone screen. "Here's one I tried recently."

He moved over to sit next to her and handed her his phone. She stared at the screen, seeing a trio of animatronic creatures on the main menu. "So...what is this? What am I supposed to do?"

"Tap the 'new game' button." She did as told and found herself sitting in what appeared to be an office. "Now," Noctis began, "you're a security guard working the nightshift of a restaurant."

"Okay..."

"You just have to click on the security cameras to look around the facility. Oh, and watch the amount of power you use. You can also click those buttons on the sides of the screen to light up the hall outside or close the doors. You're job is to keep an eye on the animatronics wandering around the place."

The girl smiled. "That doesn't sound so bad. Those things were kind of cute, like cartoon characters."

"Here's the catch---they're trying to get to your office and kill you."

"What?!" Ryella looked over at Noctis, her cheerful smile now replaced with a worried frown. "B-but why?!"

The prince chuckled with amusement. "Better watch the screen."

The Guardian snapped her head back down, focusing on the screen. "Noct, should we really have her play this?" the blond asked.

Noctis immediately shushed him. "Just let her try."

With both Prompto and Noctis at her sides, they watched her play the game. It took her several moments to understand the functions. She quickly found the animatronic display, but one was missing. She saw it in one of her cameras, staring at her. She gasped and whimpered, her fear steadily rising. Feeling bad for her, and slightly upset with Noctis's choice, Prompto placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, hoping to ease her a little.

An echoing chuckle on the game made Ryella's whimpers grow louder. She was breathing heavily, stressed and scared. Unfortunately, she didn't watch her power usage, and ran out. In an instant, all light faded out and everything grew silent. Ryella stared in horror as a pair of eyes lit up in the darkness, and with them, a lullaby played. Ryella bit her lower lip anxiously, waiting for something to happen. As soon as the lullaby ended, an animatronic lunged right into the screen with an ear-splitting screech. The girl shrieked in response, dropping the phone onto her lap and covering her eyes with her hands.

Prompto was quick to hug the girl while shooting a glare at his best friend. "Dude!"

The prince would've laughed if he hadn't seen the tears of terror pouring from the girl's eyes. "I'm...I'm sorry, Ryella."

"That was horrible!" she cried, allowing herself to huddle into the blond's comforting embrace. "Why would you have me play something like that?! I thought it was supposed to be fun!"

Noctis snatched up his phone from off her leg, exiting the game and setting it aside. Before he had a chance to respond, Gladio had already gotten up and smacked the prince in the back of the head. "Why the hell would you pick a horror game for a beginner like Ryella?"

"I-it was a mistake. I didn't think she'd take it so badly. I just wanted to give her a little scare, that's all."

Ignis sighed in frustration. "Let us hope you don't make that 'mistake' with all the ladies."

With the female quietly sobbing out of fright, the gunman held her close, rocking her a bit. "Shh, it's okay, Ryella. It's just a game, it can't hurt you. Next time, I'll show you how to play some fun games, ones that aren't horror based."

Ryella pulled back, wiping her watery eyes. "Promise they won't be scary?"

He smiled reassuringly. "I promise. There are loads of other types of games."

"Ryella..." The girl slowly turned to face the prince. He wore a concerned expression. "Look, I'm really sorry. I didn't think you'd react that badly. I swear, I won't trick you into playing any more horror games."

Ryella wasn't one to hold a grudge over something so insignificant. "Well...as long as you promise...I suppose I can forgive you."

Noctis let out a relieved sigh. "Good. Now we know, nothing scary for you."

Ignis rose to his feet. "It's getting rather late. I suppose I'll get started on supper."

Though it had been a frightful experience, Ryella could officially say she attempted to play a horror game. It was her first time ever even trying a video game of any kind. She would probably take a break from games for awhile though, especially after the near heart attack she had. Hopefully they'd get word of the Regalia before long. Everyone was eager to get their ride back, and all of their belongings stored in the trunk too. The following days could be rather uneventful, as they were simply waiting to hear from Cindy. They hoped their patience would pay off.
