CHAPTER 24

Miren watched Denzyl intently as the demon sat next to Devyn at the table. She had sensed that Denzyl was no normal man the day she met him, but the female had determined to not press Devyn for the details. Devyn would tell her when he was ready. As long as Denzyl was not hurting Devyn in any way, Miren was content with remaining indifferent toward the crimson-haired man's origin. Satisfied with how relaxed and comfortable Devyn seemed around Denzyl, Miren turned her eyes back to the food before her and let her mouth water.

As manager of one of the most successful branches of the nightclub and lounge empire, Viant, Miren had developed an experienced palate. Despite having a practically perfect figure, the human woman loved food. As long as Devyn was safe and happy and she had an abundance of delicious food, Miren could ask for no less in life. The woman swallowed as she looked at the food hungrily.

"Thank you for the meal," Devyn said as he shifted into a comfortable position in his chair. The demon next to him nodded silently in agreement.

"Of course. Please, help yourself!" Miren smiled as she grabbed one of the silver serving spoons and began filling her plate. Devyn smiled as he watched the red-haired woman happily begin eating. He had missed this. The human looked down as he recalled the many late-night adventures Miren would take him on to find snacks and the times the woman would show up at his office at two in the morning with a box of fried chicken and a case of beer.

The brown-haired man's eyes began to water as he saw a plate of dumplings sitting on the table. Devyn looked at the plump dumplings before turning his gaze to Miren. The woman had set down her utensils and was looking at him softly. Her eyes were glistening. She was saying goodbye. Dumplings had been Devyn's comfort food since he was little. Every time Devyn left on a business trip or before an important day, Miren would cook a plate of dumplings to calm him.

Devyn quickly wiped his eyes before serving himself a handsome portion of dumplings. Miren watched the boy tenderly as he took a bite.

"They're just as I remember," Devyn said as he tasted the dumpling.

"Of course. Did you think I'd forget the recipe while you were gone?" Miren responded with a sweet smile.

Devyn smiled in thanks before returning to his plate.

"So..." Miren began when the meal had progressed. Devyn set down his utensils and gave Miren his full attention. "Are you ready? To return as CEO of Vaumyr and Co.?"

Devyn nodded in response.

"Your flight is in two days. Are you prepared to leave?" The woman inquired, to which Devyn nodded. A moment of silence passed before Miren set her utensils aside and looked at the man sitting across from her. "Are you sure you want to go? I've been seeing reports that the war over there has gotten pretty bad."

"The war is focused in Harlim. Vaumyr and Co. is in Daedoeshi, which is on the opposite side of Earth as Harlim," Devyn responded.

Miren pursed her lips and remained silent. She had been trying to persuade Devyn to delay his return, but the brown-haired man did not want to wait any longer. "Promise me you'll be careful?" Miren asked softly, her gaze filled with concern for the younger male.

Devyn looked up at Miren and gave the woman a reassuring smile. "Mm. I'll be careful. Besides, I have Denzyl," the human added with a wider smile.

Miren let out a soft scoff as she turned her attention to the man sitting beside Devyn. "Take care of him for me?" She requested of the demon.

"Of course," Denzyl answered with a nod of his head.

"So this is it. There's nothing more I can say to make you stay?" The redhead inquired one last time.

Devyn nodded. "I've been away for too long. The company needs me."

"I understand that Vaumyr and Co. is the last thing you have of your parents, but..." One look of extreme determination on Devyn's face made Miren trail off on her attempted persuasion. The redhead let out a sigh and nodded in understanding. When Devyn was at his lowest, the company gave him purpose. Vaumyr and Co. kept him going. If the company had also been taken from Devyn, Miren knew the young male would have given up long ago. "Very well. I wish you luck."

"Thank you, Miren," Devyn smiled softly at the woman.

A knock on the door brought the three's attention to the dining room's entrance. The door was opened, and Hanna entered. The secretary walked up to Miren before relaying, "The war on Earth has had a breakthrough. Heaven was able to regain the Transport Tower. Hades has retreated for now."

A sigh could be heard as the news brought relief. The Transport Tower served as a connecting point between Heaven and Earth and was located in a city called Harlim, Earth. Fifty years ago, after Devyn was taken by the dendrum, Miren brought Kilo and Castyr to the Transport Tower in Harlim and was sending the angel and star back to Heaven when they were ambushed by demons. The fight which ensued came to be known as the First Battle of the Transport Tower. And now, the fifty-year struggle had finally come to an end. Heaven won back the tower.

Hanna paused respectfully as Miren absorbed the information. When Miren looked up at Hanna again and nodded, the secretary continued, "Ever since the Final Battle of the Transport Tower, reports of an angel escaping Hades have been circulating. They have gained widespread attention in the past few days. No one knows exactly when this happened or where, but, a wartime reporter for This Is Dispatch was reporting on the status of the Division of Defense's primary camp in Harlim, Earth, and saw an angel who had been missing for fifty years. He was supposedly taken by demons during the First Battle of the Transport Tower in Harlim fifty years ago."

Miren's eyes widened at the news. "The Transport Tower! The first battle!" The woman breathed. "It's Kilo! I was there. I was with Castyr!" Miren processed the information before turning back to Hanna. "Is there any other news?"

"Yes, Ma'am. Rumors of a star fighting as a soldier on Earth in the Division of Defense have been circulating. Flashes of light have been spotted during the battles at the Transport Tower. Flashes that could only belong to a star," Hanna reported.

"That's them. We found them!" Miren smiled. "Devyn, we found Kilo and Castyr!" The woman said to Devyn happily.

"What's the latest update?" Devyn inquired of Miren's secretary. He was eager to learn of the angel and star.

"None have come in as of yet. The Final Battle concluded a few days ago," Hanna answered.

"I see. Thank you," Devyn responded.

"Let me know if you hear anything else," Miren told her secretary before dismissing her. Hanna bowed before exiting the dining room, leaving the three alone. "I hope they are safe and doing well," the woman muttered with a sigh as she looked down at her half-eaten plate.

Devyn nodded silently in agreement. The human hoped with all his heart that the angel and star he rescued years ago were safe and healthy. Denzyl remained silent and studied Devyn, whose expression was filled with concern for his young friends. The demon had never met Kilo or Castyr, but he could tell Devyn had a connection with the two.

The meal continued in silence until an "Ah!" sounded across from Devyn. The brown-haired male lifted his head to see Miren looking at him. "There is one more thing we must discuss before your departure," the woman informed Devyn, who waited patiently for the redhead to continue. "You need a new secretary."

"Ah, yes. I had intended to open the position once I had returned to Daedoeshi," the man responded.

"Very well," Miren nodded in agreement.

TIME SKIP: TWO DAYS

"Are you sure you have everything?" Miren asked for the nth time as she walked Devyn and Denzyl to their departure pad.

"Yes. Thank you, Miren," Devyn chuckled lightly at the woman's perseverance in making sure he did not leave even a spoon behind.

"Ok. It doesn't hurt to check one more time."

"It's going to be alright. We've checked eight times. I can spare a few spoons," Devyn shook his head teasingly as he smiled at the woman who practically raised him.

"Ok...you're right. If you missed anything, I can just ship it to you," Miren concluded after taking a deep breath to steady herself.

Devyn smiled as he looked down at the hazel-eyed female. After fifty years, Miren had not changed. Every time Devyn left on a trip, Miren would fret and make him check his luggage eight times before she would be satisfied that he had everything. Devyn always wondered why it had to be checked 'eight' times, but he never pressed Miren for an explanation as he did not want her to fret more and check eight more times. Then, he would never be able to leave.

Devyn always found it amusing how such a strong, intimidating woman could turn into a worried sister in a split second. All it took was him saying 'goodbye.'

"Take care of him for me?" Miren requested of Denzyl once more, who bowed his head in response. "When will you talk to me? I am waiting eagerly for that day." The redhead squinted her eyes at the demon before turning back to Devyn and putting her hands on his shoulders. "Be careful out there, hm? You know he's going to be waiting for you."

Devyn smiled sweetly at the woman and took her hands in his. "I know. I'll be fine. Don't worry," Devyn responded before kissing the top of Miren's head.

"You had better keep in contact. If I don't hear from you, I am flying over there immediately, got it?"

"Got it."

"Good. Now, you'd better get going. The pilot has been glaring at me for the past five minutes."

Devyn let out a slight chuckle as the woman led him towards the aircraft prepped for takeoff. "Goodbye, Miren," Devyn bid as he began toward the craft.

"Bye, Devyn." Miren's eyes began to sparkle as she watched Devyn approach Denzyl. She had just gotten him back, and he was already leaving. At least you are no longer alone. A small smile came to the woman's lips as she saw Devyn look up at Denzyl with deep eyes. "Stay safe...please." The last word was barely a whisper and more a prayer, a plea as the young man joined the demon in entering the aircraft.
