Chapter 8
Kane looked back at Yalin, as she wowed at the giant Iron Gate. Two men stood guard as the man and woman stepped forward. The stone path was paved down three hundred feet back, until turning to a dirt road. The massive stone wall was as thick as two houses, and as tall as a small Sky scraper. Kane couldn't help but be thankful to be at the city, even with its technological lack.
"Halt in the name of the king. State your business traveler." A man stated raising his hand.
"I am Vance Alston, and this is my, sister, Azura Alston." Kane answered, as Yalin smiled, "We simply are looking for a place to settle down."
"I understand, and it seems you carry weapons as well. I'll keep an eye on you, if you don't keep those things sheathed inside the wall. Understood?" The knight replied.
"Very much so,"
"Open the gate, they're settlers!" The knight shouted out.
The man glanced back at the two new comers, "You'll be wanting to speak with Baron Ile about a house."
"Thank you." Kane replied.
Suddenly the iron gates opened as Kane walked forward, Yalin fallowing close behind him. The thick wall gave the girl a feeling of safety, not even in her own home world did she have a wall this thick; not that it was needed with force fields to protect them. The houses were spaced half an acre apart, with wooden exterior and thick hay over wood for roofing. Each house hold had its own stone chimney, as smoke could be seen leaving a few. The road way was smooth finished with slate stone for the surface. There was little breeze inside the walls, but it was a small price to pay for safety. Kane knew the priority now; he needed to earn some coin, so he could by a house.
Kane glanced at the knight patrolling the stone road, tilting his head to speak, "Can you help me find the Baron?"
"Which one," the man replied back, stopping in his tracks.
"Baron Ile," Kane answered.
"Sure thing citizen, follow me."
Kane followed the knight taking a few rights and a few lefts, until they made it to a small court house a few acres away from the king's royal palace. The building Kane and Yalin saw, was the size of a mansion, stone covering the bottom of the building until about five yards up, where wood showed. Kane walked up the steps, ushering Yalin along with him. The knight nodded as they were inches from the door, and then walked away.
A man situated by the door placed his hand up against Kane's chest, halting his progress. Kane's muscle memory almost, started a scene, as he grabbed the body guard's arm. Kane quickly let go, taking a step back.
"I apologize, I've fought in a few wars, and it's become instinct." Kane said, trying to convince the body guard.
"I understand the young deal hardly with war. Before I let you in, you must give me your name and business."
"I am Vance Alston, and this is my sister," Kane replied, "I come here for two matters of business. I would like to find a job, and perches a house."
The man gave an approving nod, "I assume you are new in the kingdom of Avalon?"
"Very much so," Kane replied.
"Well, Mr. Alston, the baron is quite busy, but seeing as ye are I need of shelter, I will allow ye in, but be wary of your words, for the baron is known for his temper."
"My deepest gratitude, "Kane said, giving the man a proper bow.
Kane move forward Yalin following behind, as she always did. Something had changed in the last few nights. She knew if there was anyone in this world, or the one before that she could trust, it was Kane Reuben. The man was as loyal as a dog, and had more empathy in him than what Yalin had ever known or thought. When she needed a shoulder to cry on, Kane was there, and that meant more to her now than ever. She had finally mourned for her mother and father that one night, when she dreamed of her memories. Kane's constant compassion, patients, protection, and care had proved that Kane Reuben was not the man she originally thought him to be.
The wide, wooden, doubled door reinforced by steel, was wide open as the two walked into the building. The rug on the floor was a royal red, four body guards standing by along the hall way. Another double door laid right in front of them, and to the left, a single door, and to the right a stair way. Kane followed the red carpet, hearing his boots footsteps on the wooden floor underneath. He swept his eyes across the hall way glancing at the wooden foundation above, and the warm cozy feeling of the home. He finally made it to the door, where an usher stood, holding a halberd.
"Wait citizen, Baron Ile is busy right now."
"How much longer," Kane inquired.
"Hard to say, he's talking to his son." The guard replied.
Shouting could be heard in the room behind, echoing in the room. Suddenly the yelling intensified, before a slammed door could be heard. Kane stood, there, shifting his feet, with his hands behind his back. Yalin peered over Kane's left shoulder, giving the guard her doe eyes. The silence was so strong the fire burning could be heard, from a room far off.
"Bring the last one in." the voice shouted from behind the door.
The body guard nodded, as he opened the door for Kane and Yalin. The room they entered had a nice feel, having dark stained wood, with book shelves behind the baron. The room felt more of like a study than anything else, with a desk, and seated by it, the baron. Kane walked forward as Baron Ile, finished writing with his quill.
"Your, name and business," Baron Ile asked.
"I am Vance Alston. I come here on behalf of a job, or earning, wondered if you had things I can do. I am an excellent swordsman and a great warrior from my land. I also come in tidings for a place to rest my head, or to rather buy a house."
"If ye want a house, it must be purchased with three thousand gold coins. I'm assuming you don't have that type of money, because you're asking for a job?"
"Precisely," Kane replied.
"You could become a guard," The baron paused, "Or you could go hunting for me."
"Hunting," Kane replied.
"I tell you what, I'll issue a house for you, and your sister, for free, if you take this job, and give you a ten thousand gold coins." The baron smiled.
"What's the job?" Kane said.
"The job is to kill an immortal man, the Iron Knight. His armor is unbreakable, by normal weapons. He has no need to eat or drink. He wears the armor of an exile. The reason for hunting him is that he has been terrorizing the nearby villages, in most case burning them to the ground."
"An exile," Kane asked.
"Yes, an exile." The baron replied.
"What is an exile?" Kane inquired once more.
The baron laughed, "Wait ye're serous? An Exile is a man, who has done a crime punishable more than just death. So he's trapped in iron armor, to wander until he dies of something. He's in all sense exiled in both mind, body and his country. I don't know anywhere where they don't know about exiles."
"I'm a little new in the area; I've traveled thousands of miles to be here." Kane replied.
"So is it a deal Mr. Alston?"
"Of course, but what about my sister I can't leave her here, and I can't bring her with me."
"I suggest leaving her in the hands to the Daughters of Uphena. They are female clerics, and priestess, they mostly heal the wounded and take of the sick. But they have very powerful healing spells, and potent potions – not to leave out their excellent cooks. They teach more skills than a woman needs to no."
"Magic you say?" Kane inquired.
"Yes," the baron said.
"I will think about it."
"Very well, we leave in a week, that's when The Wyvern Knights, come back from their dragon hunts.
"Pardon me, but did you say Dragon hunts?"
"Why?" the baron asked, getting bored.
"Because I saw a band of knights hunting dragon's not too long ago. They wore steel armor."
"Well, typically, the knights were dragon scale armor, unless they were with new recruits, what color was the dragon they hunted?"
"A green fire dragon," Kane answered.
"Aaaah, yes, the initiates first test. They must hunt a rare dragon with the leader of the band Sir William the Strong. The green scaled dragons have soft scales, and make it easier for the initiates to forge their dragon's bane."
"Dragon's bane," Kane asked.
"Yes, a sword forged with dragon blood. It hardens any metal and keeps the blade sharp. A dragon's bane can easily pierce through the toughest of dragon's hide. The older the dragon, the stronger the blade," the baron answered.
"Well I'll see you in a weeks' time." Kane said, shaking the baron's hand.
"I think I'm going to like you Vance." The baron laughed.
Kane smiled, and turned around to walk the other direction. Yalin didn't know a single word spoken through this whole time, a word not seeping from her lips. The conversation the men had, had been beyond her knowledge of languages, she was just glad Kane could speak their tongue. She hoped she never had to. Yalin, deep down, even secretly wished to return to her realm, her dimension.
Yalin watched Kane chat away with another man, dressed in robes, as Kane and herself followed him. She didn't know what was going on completely, only that they were in search of shelter and that Kane was taking care of it. She hoped the man they now followed, would bring her to a house of some sort.
"Yalin, this is our new HQ." Kane said, stopping in front of a building in the ghettos of the city.
"Here?" Yalin asked, looking at the black treated wood, and mud, stone foundation.
The house looked dirty, but was out of sight or most eyes, being crammed in-between two buildings. The windows had their wooden covers boarded up, and the roof had wooden shingles.
"Yes, because even though we are here, we have to keep a low profile?" Kane whispered.
Yalin remembered three nights back, when Kane had explained their situation. Eliba had turned against Kane, trying to kill him, but luckily to no avail. The woman was beaten by Kane, in the Tomb of Delega. Kane had suspected that they would be trying to track them down, so he suggested they take a low profile.
"It's just... really trashy."
"Another thing, I need to teach you some basic, English."
"What?" Yalin shouted as the man handed Kane the key to the house.
Kane nodded at the man, dismissing him, "I need you to be able to communicate with these people."
"Why?" Yalin whined, "I don't want to learn English."
"But you have to; your alias here is Azura Alston."
"At least it sounds pretty," Yalin said.
"Glad you like it, I'm your brother, Vance Alston."
"I kinda picked up on that." Yalin replied.
"We need to talk about something else; I need to leave in order to provide for you." Kane replied.
"Kane, I honestly wouldn't feel safe, without you." Yalin replied, "Why are you going?"
Kane walked up the stairs, opening their house's door, ignoring the question. Yalin followed up the stairs, waiting to talk about the logistics of their conversation behind closed doors. She was slightly curios what Kane had planned. Kane wouldn't leave her along, unless it was absolutely necessary, Yalin knew that much by now.
The door to the house cracked open, the boards shifting as Kane's feet pressed against the floor. The wood seemed to need some TLC from Yalin's perspective. It was amazing and almost shocking that she went from princess, to wanted, and a slight upgrade to refugee. Kane took a deep breath in, embracing his new home. Grey and black wood was all the interior had, and a giant fire place. What Yalin hadn't noticed from the crammed house on the outside, was that it was a mansion.
"I have the best location with a mansion that I can easily fix in a week." Kane replied.
"How," Yalin replied, "We have no money."
"I have a thousand gold coins, they use actual metal here, and it's refreshing. I haven't held metal money in years."
"I've never seen metal money." Yalin responded.
"Well you'll have to get used to it." Kane paused," Well, take what room you want, I'm going to sleep in the living room, until we fix this up. Oh and I'm going to teach you the basics of English this week. Once you know the basics, I'm only going to speak English to you."
"What!" Yalin yelled, "Seriously?"
"Yup," Kane replied.
Yalin felt more at home in this broken mansion then she had in years. Arguing with Kane now, reminded her that her father never had the time to talk to her. Kane was like her mentor in a lot of ways now; he had become more of a friend, more of a relative. The rugged man himself had warmed up to the girl, actually giving her smiles, and finding humor. Yalin liked to think she taught the man his humor, because he had none himself. They had been together for over a month now, it seemed wrong for Kane to be leaving, for who knows how long.
"Kane, where are you going?" Yalin said, breaking the silence.
"I have to hunt down a man. I have to do what I do best." Kane replied.
"You're going to kill someone!" Yalin said eyes wide.
"Yes, and protect people." Kane said giving a fake smile in an instant.
"Well, what do I do here?" Yalin asked.
"Would you like to learn magic?" Kane asked.
"Magic," Yalin replied confused.
"Yes."
"Does that even exist? And even if it did, where would I be learning it?"
"Yes it exists and you'd be learning it from the Daughters of Uphena."
"Daughters of what," Yalin questioned.
"Uphena, they're priestess, they learn magic, cooking, and alchemy. The care for the sick and wounded," Kane replied.
"I guess learning magic would be kind of cool." Yalin replied half interested.
"I'm going to scope out the place tomorrow."
"Can I come with?" Yalin replied.
"Sure." Kane smiled.
"Oh, Kane if I do go, will you translate what their saying?"
"Yeah, sure," Kane replied.
The rugged man's hair had started to grow out, brushing against his upper forehead, no longer staying spiked, and messy. His hair had grown bushy. His face started to grow a beard as his whiskers grew.
"Well, its noon, I'm going to get some supplies to fix what I can today, get comfy while I'm gone." Kane said, leaving the house.
