Chapter 10

Kane walked into the sweet aroma. The chapel swarmed with women and the sick, some wounded with minor scrapes, others drinking intense potions for their health. Kane carried a satchel around his shoulder, resting on his hip, filled with potions. It had only ben six days, but Kane was starting to feel at home in the city. He had come to see Yalin before he left, but couldn't find the young blonde woman in the crowd. The mystic aurora in the place was overwhelming, and that was something Kane thought he would never get used to.

The chapel's cement walls came to about fifty feet tall, with a yellow stained glass dome overhead, leaving a shadow of a woman on the floor, Uphena. The chapel of Uphena, or the Goddess of Love, was an historical building to the people, among a necessity, acting as a hospital and infirmary. The Daughters of Uphena, priestess, had taken an oath to only use magic pertaining to the healing of the wounded and sick, and claimed that Uphena herself spread her love through their selfless actions. The men of the city had learned to respect them, but outsiders had come to mock them, thinking that a woman's roll was in the kitchen. Other men, called them witches, and sorcerers of evil.

Kane himself at first did not trust these women with Yalin, who had become a great friend to him in the past week. He remembered walking through the great chapel doors, like something you would only see in a movie, and watching the women, much like now, heal the sick and afflicted. Yalin was by his side the whole time with a new dress Kane had bought for her. They both had walked into the front door, not knowing what to expect. They had walked forward talking to a woman seated by the doorway with long brown hair, and grey eyes.

"Can I help you today?" the women had asked.

Kane remembered telling her that he would like to talk to her supervisor, and leader, as he had an applicant ready. The woman gave him an even bigger smile, showing Kane her pearly white teeth. The woman seemed to speak forever, Kane ignoring most of it, knowing she was just explaining her job to him. Kane simply ignored it all, already knowing why she was there, which was to distribute potions, for coin, even a chapel needed founds to stay afloat. The rugged man from that point asked her where he could find their supervisor, and the woman pointed to the back giving him instructions.

"Kane" Yalin yelled with enthusiasm, running up the man.

The small woman had to leap a small ways to give the taller man a hug. Kane had grown more use to Yalin, and a lot less cold. He had never felt so much joy and happiness before in his life, then providing and taking care of Yalin. He watched her study her text, late at night for the last four days, and had cooked her meals. He had also listened as she spoke about the magic she was learning. Kane was even surprised to hear her comment about self-defense classes, but glad she was taking them.

"How are you doing?" Kane smiled, hugging back.

"Alright, I can't stay for long. So are you leaving now?" Yalin said in perfect English.

"Afraid so, I left you some money on the table from the odd jobs I've been taking, you'll have plenty for food, and fun this week." Kane said, releasing the girl, as her feet touched the ground once more.

"I'll miss you." Yalin replied.

"Same," Kane smirked, "I just wanted to say bye before I left."

"Really, or was it because I told you to come say bye before you left?" Yalin teased.

Kane glanced back at her with a lifted head, through the corner of his eye.

"That's what I thought." Yalin replied.

Kane often gave silent yeses, if one knew how to read the man. He kept his memories generally in the past, as Yalin tried to pry about his childhood. Kane never talked about anything about himself before the murder of her parents. He was like a sealed vault, never being able to open. Every time Yalin had asked, he had simply given her vague answers.

"Well," Kane paused, "I'm heading out, and you should have everything you need."

Yalin glanced at the ground, remembering when Kane spoke to the leader of the Daughter of Uphena.

"Will her safety be guaranteed?" Kane had started.

"Most certainly, your sister, will be very well protected, Mr. Alston." The gorgeous woman replied.

"Will you feed her if necessary?"

"Of course," The woman replied, twirling her white hair in her fingers.

"Will she learn history and languages from text information?"

"Yes, we are in many ways a university."

Yalin giggled, as Kane walked away, she thought it was funny how he dealt with the serious conversation. He made sure everything was provided for her, even an education to further develop her reasoning. Yalin thought it was refreshing, the text books and scrolls she learned from were completely, unbiased, telling history in a prefect form. The knowledge here wasn't even political, just information for any interested in learning.

Kane walked down the steps, looking inside his satchel at the potions he had just bought. He didn't think he would need them, but the number one rule of combat was to be ready for anything, even death. Kane knew exactly where he would meet; it would be outside the walls. Kane was even told that the baron would accompany him on his hunt, along with soldiers of the army. There were to leave on horseback by sundown, any left behind wouldn't be needed. Besides the end of the week, The Wyvern Knights had come back, resting a day before hunting once more.

It was noon when Kane spotted a group of soldier's coming clear into the distance, walking through the gate. The horses, they were to ride where already stationed outside the wall. Kane had waited five minutes before the baron had come with his group. Men came clad in steel, with helmets to protect their faces, except one, among them who was a woman. The girl's face was like that of a model, from Kane's world. She wore her brown hair in a braid, come down across her soldier lying across her breast plate. The baron took his helmet off greeting Kane.

"Greetings Vance, I thank thee for being here. I apologize for the presence of a woman, but she is the best archer in the land, and leader of these men. My hopes were not to offend you." The baron concluded.

"Baron, you have no need to apologize, in my part of the world, women make up the most furious warriors I have ever known." Kane replied, watching the woman smirk, "If an apology is to be extended it should be for the woman you have insulted."

The baron looked stunned as he looked down, back against the damsel.

"What is your name?" The damsel asked, leaping on to her horse.

"I'm Kane."

The baron looked up, "Pardon?"

"My name is Kane, Reuben."

"And why lie to me about your name in the first place?" The baron yelled.

"Because I am being hunted by a group of men, and I needed any proof of my residence a secret. I'm sorry if I shamed you baron, but it was safety precaution, to protect my step daughter from harm."

"I thought she was your sister?" Baron said his face red hot.

"She is, but not by blood." Kane replied with a straight face.

"I only tell you, because you should know my true name before I hunt."

"How can I trust you, if you are running from a group of warriors? Why did you not kill them if you are such a great warrior yourself?"

"Because a job of a soldier is to save lives, not take them. We fight because we need to. And the group is after me, for my sword I carry on my back. They desire the magical blade for themselves, at least their leader does."

The baron starred at the ground, frustrated.

"I'm sorry, for my lie, but I needed to keep my sister safe."

"I'd probably do the same myself." The damsel smiled.

Kane glanced, back, as the woman smiled again. Kane's hair had grown, down to his brow, becoming more of a bush, his facial hair rugged as always had become more of a beard. His yellow eyes seemed to pierce the damsel to her soul. She was no older than the age of twenty five, and had trained from the age of ten to be a warrior. Even though a warrior, Kane could still smell her sweet perfume from a distance.

"And what is your name, female warrior?" Kane inquired, smiling back.

"Kiilla Senyela, and consider us even." The damsel replied.

"And there are our knight's in armor." Kiilla said, as a band of knights in scale armor walked forward.

Sir William the Strong walked forward with a brown dragon scale armor. His claymore rested over his shoulder and his spear in his hand. He chuckled as he looked at Kane.

"Ah, Kane the Dragon Fighter," Sir William greeted.

"Sir William." Kane replied.

The rest of the group carried axes and long swords, carrying steel meshed armor with dragon scales of all sizes. The Wyvern Knights had green capes with a dragon skull embedded on the back. Their helmet's where made of steel mixed with dragon marrow. Their armor was lighter than most, and stronger than steel. Their weapons forged with dragon blood shined with a red glare in the sun.

"I was impressed with your skills, Kane, not ever man is willing to take on a green fire dragon by himself, let along with a short sword. I'm glad you made it safely back to the city." Sir William stated, "Now are we ready to go?"

"Yes, we are ready." The baron replied his gold and steel battle axe strapped to his back.

Once the group was saddled they started off, traveling towards the last attack report from the Iron Knight. It was at a ruin site, planned to be turned into a fort. The men were apparently there only a day before their inevitable ends. Kane listened in as the knight's spoke about the Iron knight.

"The Iron knight is supposed to be invincible." One whispered.

"Nothing's invincible, not even dragons." His partner whispered back.

"They say no blade has ever pierced his armor and his claymore is enchanted to grow stronger with every kill." The man whispered back.

"No worry men, not even a man said to be invincible, can stand against a dragon, I assure you that." Sir William spoke up.

"I ride on as a duty to Commander Senyela, but even I must admit I'm frightened." A soldier spoke up.

"Then maybe you shouldn't have come in the first place." Kiilla Senyela replied.

"Every soldier is worth something." Kane replied, "We will be fine, it is one man against thirteen highly trained warriors."

"Then you've obviously underestimate your foe." The soldier spoke back.

"Or maybe you underestimate your allies." Kane replied softly, "Fear not, we are with you. Even the baron comes along."

"And us, The Wyvern Knights!" Sir William replied.

Kane glanced back, catching the first real good look of Sir William. He was a tall man, and small to no means. His hair was black and his eyes a grey color, compared to the damsel's ocean blue eyes. His jaw line was strong, and cheeks soft. His chin was broad, and recessed, giving him a slight overbite. He had black side burns running down his face, and short hair.

The party entered a forest as they listened to the sounds of night. The baron kept going as did the rest of the party. The baron was in charge and they rested on his command. Kane knew they were in a hurry, but weighed the risks of a sleepless night, and didn't like the odds.

"Baron, I think we should rest, according to your sightings thee Iron Knight, is coming towards the kingdom. I think it would be wises to rest this night." Kane spoke up.

"No, we press on, we will sleep tomorrow night." The baron replied.

Kane nodded, respecting the baron's position of power.

"I agree with him Baron." Kiilla Senyela replied.

"Same answer Senyela."

Kane fell back, ride alongside Kiilla, as he whispered to her, "Why stick your neck out for me commander?"

"I agree with thee, Kane, nothing more." The damsel replied.

"Very well, Commander Senyela" Kane replied.

"Ye are not one of my soldiers, Senyela will work just fine." The woman replied.

"Opposed to Kiilla, may I ask why?"

"I never liked my first name, Senyela works fine."

"May I then inquire if Senyela is then a family name, or a chosen name?"

The woman looked at him, with a sick look, "Family name, Kane. Are you one to always pry; is that how you win the interest of a woman?"

"I apologies, I meant no disrespect, and I find your comment neither professional nor appropriate, and slightly offensive. Though I am a single man, I don't think I would want to lure any woman to a life with me, it would be in honorable and too dangerous."

"Dangerous, and in honorable, now that intrigues me Mr. Kane. Does that mean you find me in need of protection?" Senyela replied.

"No I find you quit capable, you carry yourself like a highly seasoned warrior, and carry your weapons at ready, because a true warrior knows that very little can be counted on. Regardless if a woman could handle herself, there is no reason to purposely place her in danger. And against correct teachings, I have been taught that such connections are a weakness." Kane answered.

"I find that offensive Mr. Kane, that I would be a weakness to such as thee, was it not you who said ever soldier has its worth?"

"I ask your pardon commander Senyela; it was a quote from my general, a wicked man, but never the less, a wise one. Again, I apologies," Kane replied.

"You apologies seem to run out of your mouth, Mr. Kane, can I trust this one as well as the last?"

"That's not for me to decide. If it was up to me, I warn you not to trust me, I am a trained killer, not warrior, unlike you, and I have had my morals beaten out of me."

"Explain then, killer."

"I have the time, but not the words to explain the event with, neither do I desire to." Kane replied.

"And ye would leave a lady such as I with such a vague understanding?"

"I would, not even my step daughter, knows."

"Is she not a weakness unto thee also?"
"According to my training she is, but I am honor bound to protect her, and have killed long enough to know, that true strength comes from protecting."

"It seems that you surpass the wisdom of your general."

"Such kind words, from a woman, have I not heard."

"Shut up, and ask the woman to dance!" Sir William shouted from behind.

Kane scoffed, "I guess the knight may be jealous of my inquires."

"Nay, the night simple sees love blossom, and knows very well what it looks like, haven wooed the court of young ladies in his day. Not to mention this knight is married, and envies no other man for his lucky find." The knight laughed back.

"I think dancing would be counter intuitive, as we are hunting a man responsible for the murder of thousands." Senyela replied.

"I agree with the lady, as that is not my priority, nor hers." Kane backed up.

"Say what you want, love birds." Sir William shouted, as Senyela's men laughed.

Kane shook his head, as the damsel ride quietly on her horse. Senyela patted her black stallion's side, whispering into its ear. Kane glanced over, noticing the woman's actions.

"Why are you speaking to the horse?" Kane asked.

"Because this one is my friend, her name is Eclipse, at noon day, the sun shimmers on her fur, like an eclipse at its peak. I've had her sense she was a baby. She is the only animal I completely trust."

"I see, and do you know the name of my ride?" Kane replied.

"It's a living thing, it's more than just a ride, have you ever owned such a beautiful creature, look at its brown coat, and white tail. His main, is an unnatural color of read, at the very edge, what would ye name your horse?"

"I don't know." Kane replied.

"It's the baron's horse; you'd have to ask him for the real name, but I would call him Spark."

"His name is Ember, and he's your horse now, Kane Reuben." The baron replied.

"I appreciate the offer, but I have no stable for such an animal." Kane replied.

"Then pay for a stable." Sir William laughed.

"It seems even among our whispers, we will be heard." Senyela whispered to Kane.

Kane laughed, as the group continued their slow trot through the forest. The night stars glaring down on them, Kane watched as the Senyela threw her red hood over her head, and rapped her cloak over her arms. The knight's did the same with their capes as followed the baron. Kane was the only one without a cloak, missing and remembering his brown trench coat. The leather of the trench coat was made of Ka-donch skin. The Ka-donch, where animals, native to the planet Ka-Kadocsh, their skin absorbed energy, and their leather was tougher than the average steel blade. The special made trench coat was a gift as he left his training, and became an assassin. The light material was the best armor, any man could ask for, even Kane.

The sounds of dinosaurs were heard off in the distance. Kane glanced off into the distance. It sounded like a Tyrannosaurs-Rex, eating.

"Did you here that?" Kane asked.

"How could we not?" the baron replied.

"Not getting jumpy on us are you?" Senyela teased.

Kane looked at the damsel with a plane in humored face, "I can't get jumpy."

Sir William laughed, "yeah, and I can't eat."

"It was beaten out of me." Kane replied, as the group fell silent.

"Beaten how?" Senyela asked.

"By any means deemed necessary."

"Look, Van- I mean Kane, the Rex is a ways off, at least half a mile." The baron replied.

"I didn't know if it was a problem or not." Kane replied, "If it was, I could take it out."

"Ha! Not alone! Never has a man fought one along." A Knight replied.

"I had to fight one, as part of my training, alone." Kane replied.

"How is it that ye survived?" Sir William asked.

"It was mostly muscle memory and the right tools. Give both a man can do anything."

"Such a thing is a feet, even for me, I fight Wyvern's by myself."

"It's not a contest, boys." Senyela replied.

"Can we ride in peace for once this night?" The baron complained.

"I apologies Barron Ile," Kane said as the group's voices died out.
