The rabbit's ears twitched.
Grian's voice.
It was near.
He smiled.
Running through the jungle, he could see light up ahead. It had taken Sam so long to hunt down Grian, but now the rabbit was so close.
He couldn't go home empty handed.
Peering through the bushes, his eyes widened at the sight of Grian. He hadn't changed a bit. His sandy blonde hair, stunning eyes, his beaming smile. Grian was as beautiful as ever.
But..
He was with someone else.
A tall man, jet black hair with a slick mustache and sleek suit. He seemed to be proud of something, showing off some sort of mechanical farm.
Sam wasn't very familiar with redstone, but he could easily recognize the sparkling powder from a distance.
"It's...uh..great, Mumbo!" Grian said with a nervous chuckle, the mustached male sarcastically rolling his eyes with a smile.
"You don't understand any of this, do you?"
Grian nervously laughed, nodding his head reluctantly. "I just don't get this stuff!" He admitted with a smile, Mumbo just grinned.
"It's alright, Gri." Mumbo said, the nickname making Sam's chest tighten. "I know you don't understand any of this, I'm just super proud of this! It took hours for me to build this super smelter!"
Sam frowned, his eyes narrowing as he focused on Mumbo. He needed to bring Grian back home with him, but with these new friends that he had, it could prove difficult.
He fidgeted with a bottle in his hands, a glimmering red potion swirling in the glass. He watched as Grian waved goodbye, smiling as he flew away. Mumbo grinned as he waved, watching him soar back to his base.
Stepping out of the greenery that he previously hid the rabbit, Mumbo's body quickly whipped around as he instinctively drew his sword, incase of a creeper trying to sneak up on him. He lowered the blade as he noticed that it wasn't a mob, but a player, a perplexed look across the Redstoner's face.
"O-oh! Sorry 'bout that. Are you a new hermit? I haven't seen you around before."
Sam just shook his head. "I'm actually here to collect something that belongs to me. A friend."
Mumbo raised an eyebrow. "Who?"
"Someone by the name of Grian. He needs to come back home with me." Sam said with a cheerful grin, the tall Brit slightly skeptical of the rabbit.
"O-oh..We don't have anyone on the server with that name." He lied, Sam chuckling underneath his breath.
"Don't lie to me," he threatened while holding up the potion bottle, Mumbo taking a step backwards. "Is. Grian. here?" Sam asked, despite already knowing the answer. He smiled when Mumbo nervously shook his head.
"N-no." Mumbo said with a bead of sweat dripping down his face. Sam laughed.
"You're a terrible liar! If you won't tell me where he went, then I'll just make you bring him to me!"
Panicked and scared, Mumbo reached for his communicator that rested in his pocket. Sam took notice, throwing the potion at the Redstoner's chest, the bottle exploding upon impact and sending Mumbo tumbling to the ground.
A red mist swirled around him, the Redstoner's eyelids growing heavy as Sam's laughter rung in his ears.
"Bring him back to me. This is the last time I let Grian escape."
Then everything went black.
—
"Mumboooooo!"
Grian's voice called from the sky, Mumbo's eyes slowly opening as a soft groan slipped from between his lips. Sitting upright and rubbing his head, the Redstoner was a bit confused about what had happened, the last thing he remembered was waving goodbye to Grian.
Swooping down from the sky, the British architect landed in front of Mumbo, his heart skipping a beat as he watched the wind ruffle through Grian's golden hair. The Redstoner's best friend looked stunning in the morning light, how had he never noticed?
"Mumbo? Earth to Mumbo, are you there?" Grian said as he snapped his fingers in front of the Brit's face, the mustached man blinking as he pulled himself out of his thoughts.
"Oh- I- erm- no?" Mumbo stuttered, his face heating up as Grian giggled. His laughter was beautiful, Mumbo never wanted it to end.
"You spoon," he chuckled. "I found you asleep on the ground, did you work 'til you passed out? I told you to stop that, it's not healthy!"
"I'm sorry," he muttered breathlessly, so in awe of Grian's beauty that he was barely paying attention. Slowly reaching out his hand, Mumbo pushed a bit of the builder's golden hair out of his face.
"Are you feeling alright?"
"I am now."
Grian nodded his head. "Alright, well, I gotta go meetup with Scar. He's helping me in Aque."
A surge of anger shot through Mumbo's mind.
He would rather hang out with Scar?
What does Scar have that he doesn't?
"I-I could help you in Aque, Scar is always busy with Bdubs and his mayoral duties anyway." Mumbo said as he grabbed Grian's wrist to prevent the shorter male from flying away, the builder flinching a bit.
"It's fine Mumbo," he said while pulling away from the Redstoner's hold on his wrist. "Scar and I were thinking of finally doing the back of my mansion afterwards, and I don't want to drag you into that."
Mumbo took a few steps back, reluctantly nodding before flying off without allowing the shorter male a chance to speak. Rage and anger was the only thing on the Redstoner's mind, his sweet Grian shouldn't be around other hermits.
Grian needed to be protected.
And Mumbo would do anything to keep him safe.
—
"Mumbo?"
Scar landed in the hermit challenge area, spotting the mustached Redstoner with his back facing the terraformer. He was rustling through a chest, humming to himself, though he looked up at the sound of Scar landing.
"You made it!" He forcefully smile, though hatred made his stomach twist into sour knots.
"Yeah! Thanks for the invite! Iskall and Grian always tell me how fun these hermit challenges are, I'm so happy that I'm being initiated!"
Mumbo slightly twitching at the mention of Grian's name, but his smile never faded.
"First things first-" Mumbo pulled out a plate of cookies, Scar's eyes widening at the delectable sweets. "You need to eat one of these to begin the initiation!"
Scar took one from the plate, smiling happily as he shoved the cookie into his mouth. Mumbo just smiled, casually continuing to explain the rules of hermit challenges, with Scar's face slowly losing color as he went on.
"M-Mumbo? What was in that cookie..?" Scar asked as he stumbled a bit, his world beginning to spin. The Brit only smiled.
"You should head home, lay down and rest with Jellie."
'Because it'll be the last time you ever see her.'
Scar nodded weakly, pulling out a rocket as he coughed sickly. He waved goodbye as he flew off, a sinister grin across Mumbo's face as he watched the terraformer disappear.
Now that he was taken care of, Grian was safe.
Mumbo could have Grian all to himself.
—
"Scar?" Grian called for the mayor as he used his axe to break down the door, glancing around for the terraformer. They were supposed to meet an hour ago to wrap up the back of the mansion that they had started yesterday.
The small home in Larry's shell was dim and cold, there was no sound. Grian frowned, climbing down the ladder to enter Scar's bedroom. Jellie was sitting with her back turned to the Brit, her tail swinging back and forth as her emerald eyes were glued to the purple bed. The builder walked over to see what had captured the cat's curiosity.
"You're sleeping?" Grian said aloud as he noticed the purple blankets pulled over the mayor's head. "Scar I thought we were gonna finish the ba-"
Grian froze as he pulled the covers off of Scar, the terraformer completely still. He wasn't breathing, Scar's normally vibrant-green eyes were now dull and glassy, no life or emotion on his pale face. Grian shakily placed two fingers on Scar's neck to try and check for a pulse, his body shaking even more violently as he felt no heartbeat coming from the mayor.
A quiet "mew" came from Jellie, the grey cat gently rubbing her head against her owner's hand, trying to get Scar to scratch behind her ears. When there was no response, she climbed atop the mayor's chest, her pink tongue licking Scar's cheek. After a few moments of trying to get her owner to wake up, Jellie curled into a ball and fell asleep as she continued to wait for Scar.
"Grian?"
The shorter hermit jumped at the mention of his name, so lost in his own thoughts that he hadn't heard someone entering the house. Mumbo stood with a perplexed look on his face, Grian fighting the urge to hold back tears.
He fell to the ground, the small Brit sobbing uncontrollably, Mumbo getting on his knees to comfort the broken male. "Scar- he- dead-" Grian choked between his distressed sobs, Mumbo staying silent.
This isn't what he wanted. He just wanted Grian to himself, the Redstoner didn't want to hurt him.
Lifting up the crying hermit in a bridal fashion, Mumbo carried Grian out of the magical village while letting the builder sob into his chest. The mustached Brit only stroked his golden hair in an attempt to comfort the grieving male.
The moon began to take its place in the sky, the Redstoner carrying Grian back to his mansion before the hostile mobs could begin to spawn. The blonde male had fallen asleep in his arms, Mumbo smiling at the sleeping hermit.
He wiped Grian's tears that were rolling down his face, gently placing the sweater-wearing Brit onto the soft mattress. Mumbo sat on his knees beside the bed, stroking Grian's hair as he slept, his eyes never leaving the Brit's peaceful expression.
Did Mumbo feel bad for poisoning Scar?
Not at all. He was just doing what needed to be done.
He would kill all the hermits just to keep Grian perfect and safe. Mumbo wouldn't let anything bad happen to his love.
—
Mumbo woke up to the sounds of parrots chirping, the Redstoner rubbing his tired eyes as he let out a yawn. He must have fallen asleep while watching Grian. Glancing to the short hermit, Mumbo raised an eyebrow as he noticed the builder quietly sobbing with his knees pulled to his chest.
The mustached Brit climbed onto the bed, gently pulling Grian onto his lap while littering his neck with small kisses. The builder tried to pull away, but Mumbo only held him tighter.
"M-Mumbo, let me go.." Grian croaked as he pushed against the Redstoner's chest, but the taller male didn't stop kissing the blonde's neck. Mumbo was enjoying himself too much to stop.
"P-pl-lease.." Grian begged weakly, hating every moment that Mumbo kissed his neck. "I-I can't do this right now, a-after S-Scar-"
"Shh." Mumbo said, placing a finger on Grian's lips. "You don't need to worry about him anymore, it's just you and me now."
"M-M-Mumbo.." Grian stuttered, but he was silenced as the crazed Redstoner pressed their lips together. The shorter male fought Mumbo's hold on him, squirming in his arms, but the mustached hermit was much stronger, forcing him in place.
When Mumbo pulled away, he had a wide smile across his face, his scarlet eyes sparkling. "See? Wasn't that nice?"
Grian slowly shook his head in disagreement, Mumbo grabbing his chin and holding the builder still as he continued to kiss his neck. The smaller Brit quietly whined, forced to stay still and comply.
"W-w-w-why are you doing this?" Grian stuttered as Mumbo pulled away once more, his scarlet eyes glimmering with excitement and joy.
"I'm working with a friend of yours, Sam! He says if I bring you back to him, we can be together forever!" Mumbo said with a wide and eager smile, but Grian's heart sunk.
"Mumbo," Grian mumbled sadly with a quiet voice, placing his hands on the Redstoner's cheeks with tear-filled eyes. "Sam did something to you. Please, tell me what he did."
"He came to me before I found you with Scar! He told me his plan and I agreed, so we can be together forever and ever!"
"M-M-Mumbo-"
"Shh. That's enough, Sam is waiting." Mumbo said with a calm smile, lifting Grian into his arms, the shorter Brit squirming to try and escape.
"N-no! Please!"
His eyes glanced towards the exit of the mansion, Grian's stomach twisting with fear as he spotted the impatient rabbit tapping his foot against the ground. He smiled as Mumbo approached, the Redstoner holding the builder close to his chest, smiling down at the rabbit.
"Here he is, Sir!"
"Good job, Mumbo." Sam grinned, locking eyes with Grian.
"Let's go home."
