Jules decided to walk Helen home. Shane joined them on the way there. Jules adviced Helen to make Jason jealous using Shane. It worked.
Evan and Shane had an argument and went out of Helen's house to fight.
Everyone caught up? Good!
Chapter Thirty-two.
I'd never broken a bone in my body.
And I definitely didn't expect to break my first one on Christmas night.
It's funny how things can turn from being good to unexpected and finally painful, all in just one hour. It's also kind of crazy how I was the one who ended with a broken bone when I wasn't even in the fight.
"Don't close your eyes!" Lau begged, crying next to me while holding my good hand. I had no idea why I was being carried in a wheel chair, my legs were fine.
"Jules, stay with us." Jordan said dramatically while pushing my wheel chair forward.
"I'm fine! You don't ha-Holy mother of Ruffles!" I felt the electrifying, pounding pain in my fingers when I tried to dismiss my friends' worry.
"Oh God! She's leaving us!" Jordan pushed harder until we were the wheelchair version of Toretto from fast and furious, "Don't follow the light!"
I rolled my eyes through my pained expression, "You guys are overreacting, I'm fi-Ah! Ow! Ow!" I had no words to explain the pain of a broken bone. It pounded so painfully, I felt like I had my throbbing, bleeding heart in my hand.
"Where is that emergency doctor?!" Lau looked, moving around the pale, hospital hallway.
"We should call her mom," Jordan recommended.
"No!" Lau and I said at the same time.
Helen appeared in front of us, "We're in the wrong hallway," she gestured us to go back, "This is the pediatric emergency area."
"Oh," we all whispered in wonder.
Jordan turned my wheelchair around with so much expertise, I'd start to wonder if he should become a nurse. He was really good at it.
"That explains the unicorns' paintings." Lau mumbled.
"Can we focus?" I said holding my possibly broken fingers.
We moved back into the whole and then everything happened in slow motion. My mother, Dr. Jones, entered the opposite direction of the hallway and we went all crazy moving around without finding a single place to hide. Luckily for us, mom was too busy checking a folder in her hands and stopped by the nurse station which gave us some more time to panic.
"We need to hide!" Lau whispered.
"Stop spinning me around!" I demanded to Jordan, "I'm getting dizzy!"
"I can't!" Jordan whispered in panic.
Helen was the brave one to open some random door and gestured us all to get inside. It looked like a janitor closet or something. The strong smell of bleach got me even dizzier.
"Phew!" Jordan leaned against the door, "We were so close to getting caught."
"Am I ever going to get medical attention?" I whined, grimacing in pain.
"We should just go outside. You're fine. Your mom will understand." Lau encouraged.
Jordan glared at her, "And you say that now? After we just went all panicky in the hallway?"
"I think I'm going to throw up," Helen mumbled.
Lau raised her finger, "Oh no, you aren't! This is a very enclosed space. You're not throwing up on us!"
"The smell of bleach is too strong!" Helen pleaded.
"Guys," I started.
"Don't you dare throwing up, girl!" Lau menaced.
"Just take deep breaths. You'll be fine." Jordan rubbed Helen's shoulder.
"I can't take deep breaths! The scent of bleach will get even deeper in my lungs!" Helen argued.
"Guys,"
"That doesn't make any sense!" Jordan frowned.
"Guys!" I screamed aloud.
They snapped their heads to look at me, "What?"
"I think I'm going to..." and everything went black for me.
How did this all happen? How did I end up with a possible fingers' fracture, passing out in a janitors closet? I will enlighten you.
One hour ago.
I hated violence.
Gratefully, I hadn't had to witness it too many times in my life. The only two times I had witnessed it, involved Evan and Shane. And well, the third time went to them as well.
Three in a row, they were on fire. As if violence would solve anything. One of the reasons I hated violence is that I have no idea of what to do, how to handle it. It was like trying to stop two giants from fighting. I was just too short for it.
So, on Christmas night, during the coldest snowstorm of the year I watched one of my closest friends and my ex-boyfriend slash possible still boyfriend take a punch at each other.
"Stop it! Stop this!" I yelled at them. I was freezing. Every time I tried to get between them, they would push me away.
"Jules, get out of the way." Jordan recommended, holding me back, "You may get hurt."
"They're acting like kids." Lau said loud enough for them to hear. Did they care? Did they stop? No. Was I angry? Yes. Why did they have to take it this far? They weren't cavemen! What would all of this solve?
I was angry at how immature they were being so I did something really mature: I picked up some snow and threw it at them.
"Stop!" I hit Shane's face, "You stupid cavemen!" I hit Evan's head, "We are not in the stone age anymore!" more snow, I aimed at their faces because if it got in their eyes, they would have to stop, right? Did they stop?
Again, no, they didn't.
I was out of breath but I still kept my snow assault. I was hopeless. Snow was falling more and more, the storm was getting worse. We were probably going to get frostbite if we stayed there. But again, the little cavemen didn't care about that, either.
I was angry, frustrated and feeling powerlessness. A myriad of emotions washed over me and I was suddenly done with this situation. If they wanted to freeze out here, they could go ahead and do it. I was done.
I let my little snow balls fall from my hands, "I'm done." My voice wasn't loud. I wasn't screaming anymore. I talked, "If you want to kill each other in this freezing night. Go ahead and do it. That won't change anything at all," by this point I had their attention, "It won't change the way I feel about you two." Evan's hardened gaze softened.
Shane took a step forward, "Jules-"
I shook my head, "No, go ahead and keep ruining my Christmas night! Thank you, really!" and with that, I turned around and left them there to freeze on their own.
Of course, life was life and I still sucked at triumphal exits.
As I stepped on the sidewalk, I slipped. But it wasn't just the regular slip and fall on your butt kind of thing. No, that was too simple to ruin my night.
I slipped through the sidewalk, trying so hard not to fall that I ended falling on my side on a awkward position. My head hit the cold frozen pavement and I fell right over my hand. Something snapped in my fingers and scream of pain left my mouth.
"Oh my God!" everyone rushed to me in a blink of an eye.
Lau was the first one to reach me, "Are you okay?" Jordan appeared next to her, followed by Shane and Evan.
"I'm fine!" I tried to get up, using my hands as supports but my left hand gave out and pain paralyzed me, "God!"
"Jules," Evan bent over in front of me, "Are you okay?" he held my face with both hands, pure concern in his dark eyes.
"Oh no, you aren't." Lau pushed him away, "This is your fault!" she accused, "Both of you," she gestured him and Shane, "back off." I couldn't blame her for that. Lau always got defensive when I got hurt.
Jordan lifted me up easily, "You okay? Where does it hurt?"
"My hand." I muttered, looking down at it, "Oh God." My fingers didn't look right. They looked twisted in unnatural positions.
Jordan made a face, "We need to take her to the hospital."
"Our cars are too far and I'm not sure we could drive through the snow." Lau said shaking.
"Let's go in my car." Evan said quickly. It wasn't an offer. It was statement. He ran inside his house for his keys and 5 minutes later we were on our way to the hospital. I sat between Lau and Helen in the backseat. Lau caressed my head while I took deep breaths. It hurt like hell. Jordan was in the copilot seat in silence.
My head hurt as well but the pain in my hand was stronger.
As I leaned my head on Lau's shoulder, I looked ahead and caught Evan staring at me through the rear-view mirror. His dark gaze was grazed by the rebel strands of midnight hair on his forehead. No matter what, the intensity of his eyes would always get to my soul.
I swallowed and looked away. I couldn't take it.
We got to the hospital and everyone rushed out of the car, leaving Evan behind. Jordan carried me inside and somehow found a wheelchair to throw me in and you know the rest.
Now
I passed out due to the small contusion in my head and I had to spend the night in the hospital for observation. Who told me that? My own mother. Yes, she found out. We were stupid enough to think that once I was checked in, the doctor in duty wouldn't know my mother and immediately called her. She had worked there for years, everyone knew her. Not to mention, we shared a last name.
She kept asking me all these questions and I was just tired but apparently, I couldn't go to sleep. People with contusions can't sleep right away after it. I was actually relieved when she left to get some test results.
I shifted in the uncomfortable hospital bed and sighed. I didn't get too much free time because the door was opened once again.
"Mom, don't-" my words were caught in my throat.
That person was the last person I expected to see.
