• Chapter Two •
I learnt two things when I was in second grade: one, that clouds weren’t made of gummy bears—I know, shame, isn’t it?— and two, that Laura absolutely loved honey lollipops. She could share her panties with me but not her honey lollipop; she loved them that much. That was just an example by the way; I don’t think anyone shares underwear, that’s just gross.
Anyway, Lau just loved those lollipops. Personally I didn't like them. They taste like medicine. Of course I would never let her know that. I didn't want to get punched in the face. Lau looked like a defenseless girl but she sure knew how to punch. I learnt that when we were in seven grade but that’s another story.
The point is, we were now standing in the middle of the road because my dear best friend had spotted a small store where they were selling honey and all kind of products derived from it: cookies, sweets, bread and of course, lollipops. I was sitting on the car’s hood, trying to be patient with her.
“Hurry up, woman!” I shouted at her, watching her squeal in front of the variety of honey lollipops they had here. I was dying to see my boyfriend. It’d been two weeks, TWO bloody weeks. So excuse me, if I was being a little impatient. Jason was leaning against the car next to me.
“She sure loves those things,” he told me, shaking his head “I don’t like them,”
“Never say that in front of her. She will kill you,” I said seriously.
Jason chuckled, “Thanks for the head-ups. So,” he started leaning off the car “did you like your surprise?” I gave him a half-smile.
“Yeah but it’d be cool if we were in River-town already,”
“You really like him, don’t you?” he stated the obvious.
I sighed, “Is it that obvious?” He nodded.
“If he hurts you-“
I cut him off, “You will kick his ass and make sure to make him sterile, I know.” I remembered his words very clearly. Jason smiled sweetly at me.
“That’s right. He might be taller and stronger but I am a fierce lion,” he affirmed, slapping his chest. I laughed.
“You don’t look like a lion to me,” He raised an eyebrow “more like a kitty,”
“A kitty?” Jason sounded offended “Ow! My masculinity is wounded,” he clutched his chest dramatically. I was laughing my ass off when I heard a horn behind us. A truck had stopped right next to Jason’s car, a very familiar truck.
“Look what the cat dragged in,” Shane greeted, leaning over his window. I hadn’t seen him since the cabin day. He looked his usual hot self, wearing a sleeveless white t-shirt. His blond brownish hair was messy as usual, giving him the disheveled look he pulled off very well. He had sunglasses on. To be honest, he looked like a freaking Abercrombie model. This made me wonder why he would be interested in me. I was average. ‘Your boyfriend is even hotter’ my conscious reminded me giggling. Oh yeah, that’s right. My boyfriend… mental sigh.
“Hey, Jerkpid,” I greeted back, folding my arms across my chest.
He smirked at me, taking off his sunglasses, “As charming as usual, Jones,” his hazel eyes scanned my body shamelessly. I gave him a ‘Really?’ look. Was he seriously checking me out so openly?
“Jerkpid?” Jason chimed in, shaking Shane’s hand.
“A combination betw—“
“It’s a secret,” Shane cut me off “Isn’t it, little minion?” I froze.
I love you, little minion.
I remembered his words clearly inside my head. I swallowed. The question was, did he remember that day? Did he remember confessing his undying love for me? I really didn’t want to find that out. But there was something in the way he was staring at me that told me he did remembered.
“Is that so?” Jason asked me, watching me closely. It was my time to lie and if you know me, you would know I sucked at lying.
“Yeah…it’s… sort of…” I trailed off, “you know, a code between us, like the code you and I have,” I explained.
Jeez, that came out better than expected.
I had no idea why I wasn’t simply saying the truth. Maybe, I was afraid to piss Shane off. What if he told everyone he had said he loved me? That would be not only awkward but embarrassing for all of us. Jason held his chin, deep in thought.
“That means you give him condoms, too?” he wondered aloud.
“No! Of course not!” I shook my hands in front of me.
Shane frowned “Condoms?” he looked pretty confused, “And what does he mean by ‘too’? Are you a condom provider?” he joked, pinching my waist. I jumped on my skin.
“No! It’s not like that!”
“And here I thought you were as innocent as they come,” Shane pretended to look disappointed.
“She is innocent!” Jason defended fiercely, “She’s a virgin after all,” my mouth fell to the floor.
“You’re a virgin?” Shane laughed out loud. I was blushing tomato red by now.
“Thanks, man, really,” I stated sarcastically, patting Jason’s back. I could officially say everyone knows I’m virgin.
And the award to the most known virgin of the Year goes to… me!
“You never stop surprising me, Jones,” Shane stared at me intensively. I swallowed.
“What are you doing here anyways?” I asked, trying to change the subject because my virginity should be a private thing, not something all my friends get to comment about.
“Jordan invited me,” Shane replied.
“And where is he?”
“Boo!” someone whispered from behind me, scaring the hell out of me. I screamed, turning around abruptly. My eyes met the big grinning Jordan. His shining blond hair almost blinded me.
“Jo!” I exclaimed, jumping to his arms. He hugged me tightly. We’d become pretty close in the past two weeks since he was always around Lau and she was always around me. It’s incredible how close you can get to a person in a short period of time.
“Hey, Sunshine,” Jordan lifted me up and twirled me around.
“I missed you!” I said honestly. Of course, I was overreacting, it’d only been two days since the last time we saw each other. He put me down, grinning down at me.
“Missed you, too. Nobody can play Mario Kart like you,” Jordan pinched my nose. I chuckled.
“Sorry to interrupt your joyful encounter but can you two get out of the way? I need to park,” Shane sounded annoyed.
“Cheer up, buddy,” Jordan recommended as we walked out of the road “Where’s my girl?” he asked me eagerly.
“She’s buried among the honey lollipops,” I gestured him the store. We could see her through the transparent glass, roaming happily around the store. Lau already had two bags in her hands. Jordan stared at her, a glint of pure longing appeared in his eyes. I couldn’t help but smile at the way he looked at her. He was crazy about her.
“I think I like her or something,”
Jason’s words reechoed inside my head. I pressed my lips in a tight line. Why did he have to realize he like her so late? He already had a girlfriend, and Lau had Jordan. His recently discovered feelings were just a big invitation to drama and complications. I know I’m probably thinking this way too much. But this is how I see things, if Jason liked Lau, it wouldn’t be a big problem since I know he wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize her relation-ship. The problem is, I didn’t think this was an one-sided thing. Why? Laura was my best friend. I know her better than anyone. And I knew she wasn’t completely indifferent to Jason. I mentally sighed. I crossed my fingers and hoped this wouldn’t turn into a huge love quadruple. Basically, because they were all my friends and I didn’t want any of them to get hurt, not even Helen, she was a nice girl.
“Earth to Jules!” Shane whispered in my ear, snapping me out of my analytic thoughts. I realized we were alone at the side of the road. Uh-oh, we were alone. We hadn’t been alone since the day he told me he loved me. Oh God!
We’re alone! Don’t panic, Jules. Do not panic!
I pushed him away “I was analyzing something important, ok?”
Shane loomed over me, “Was that ‘something important’ your virginity?” I pursed my lips.
“Drop it already,” I started walking away from him.
“Oh come on!” he followed me, “You’re the first virgin girl I have met, I need to document this,”
“I’m not talking about this with you,” I pushed the store’s door opened. Unfortunately, a glass door was not stopping Shane. I spotted Lau a few meters away, Jordan was next to her smiling at her excitement.
“Are you waiting for marriage or some corny sh*t like that?” Shane asked, catching up with me.
I rolled my eyes, “No, and if I was, it’s none of your business,” I just needed to take a few steps to reach Lau and I would get rid of Shane’s questionnaire. But of course, that wasn’t happening. Shane grabbed me by my arm and turned me around. I faced him with red cheeks. I could feel his intense gaze on me but I didn’t dare to look at him.
“Stop running from me,” his voice was soft, an inch of annoyance was coating it. I bit my lower lip, trying to yank my arm off.
“Let me go!”
“Why aren’t you looking at me?” he questioned, shaking me by my arm a little. I looked up to meet his eyes.
“Can you let me go now?” I pleaded in a whisper. He narrowed his eyes at me but then an evil smirk formed in his lips “Shane?” it happened so fast I didn’t have time to scream or do something. Shane bent down, wrapped his arms around my knees and put me over his shoulders. I gasped as he practically ran out of the store, carrying me like a sac of potatoes. Hum, potatoes… fried… Ruffles.
Focus, girl! You’re being kidnapped!
My conscious yelled at me. I blinked.
“What are you doing?! Put me down!” I punched his back, trying to get a reaction, “Shane! Put me down now!” I heard him chuckle. I couldn’t see where we were going, “Shane Mason! You better-“ he smacked my butt, making me turn strawberry red. I squirmed in his hold. I was thankful to be wearing shorts under my dress.
“Behave, little minion,” he spoke softly.
“You pervert! Do not dare touching my-“ he smacked me again. I cannot believe this guy! “Stop it!”
“Then behave!”
“You’re kidnapping me! Help! Someone!” another smack made me squirm again.
“I’m not kidnapping you,” he said casually.
“No, of course not. You’re just carrying me over your shoulder against my will to take me Gods know where. How could I possibly come up with the idea of kidnap?” sarcasm flowed out of my mouth easily.
“Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit,” he stated. I groaned in frustration.
“Put me down! I’m getting dizzy!” I was actually getting tired of staring down at his butt. Shane had a great butt, by the way, all muscles.
“We’re almost there,”
“There?” I tried to lift my head to take a look at my surroundings but it only got me dizzier “Shane!” he finally put me down. I rubbed my head, looking around. We were in the middle of pine’s trees surrounding the road. I could see the cars and the store in the distance “Why did you bring me here?” I frowned. Shane smiled at me.
“Because we need to talk,”
Jason’s P.O.V
I groaned, sitting on my car’s hood. How long were we going to stay in the middle of the road? Buying lollipops was not the part of the plan. What was next? Buying souvenirs from the River-town’s main store? This was crazy. I mean, come on, this town is like one hour away from ours. This isn’t necessary. But apparently, Jules didn’t have a problem with this waste of time; she seemed too busy with Shane. I wonder what was going on between those two. What was taking Lau so long anyway? Just take the god damn lollipop and get out of the store, woman.
I rubbed my face. I didn’t know why I was so moody. I was usually a patient person. I stared at the store, watching how Lau put some sweets inside her bag. The blue dress she was wearing really suited her curves. She looked childish with her hair braided at the sides of her face. I smiled, she looked cute. Jordan appeared next to her, causing my smile to vanish. He wrapped an arm around her waist and kissed her temple. She grinned at him, telling him something. I squeezed my hands into fists.
Calm down, man. You need to get used to this.
I mentally told myself. I needed to learn to live with this. This feeling would go away sooner or later. I got my phone and dialed a number. She picked up at the second ring.
“Hey, babe,” Helen’s sweet voice filled my ears calming me. I let out a long breath.
“Hey, where are you?” I asked, taking one last look to Lau. I shook my head, “I need to see you.”
X Growing up X
I added a little bit of Jason’s P.O.V at the end. What do you think?
