Chapter 32: Takes more than a day

"Carry on and you won't like me when I get angry." Octavia threatened, throwing her knives and sword at the target, in their corner of camp. After days of sparring with the younger, more competitive Blake, Enyo is used to the trash talk. "Bold of you to assume i liked you anyway."
Ignoring the death glare sent her way, Enyo gazes at the camp around her. Arkadia, the people had named it, has definitely progressed from the fallen metal structures of the sky peoples society to the worthy home of survivors.
Seeing Kane across the camp served a reminder of what Enyo had to do today as well as a conversation that they had;
"I know this may seem as a bit of an imposition for you but we need as much information as we can." Kane pleaded, hoping that he could convince her before Abby butts in again to try and sway her.
Enyo, who was happy to eat alone until the power couple of Arkadia seemed to decide they needed to have an impromtu meeting and have two very different opinions about involving her, leaned back in her chair and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.
"So let me get this straight...You want me to sneak into Trikru territory to talk to the leader and give her a radio without alerting them that I'm there? You do realise everyone talks to Indra right?" Enyo explains, though she doesnt sound discouraged.
Kane nods in understanding, but his faith is undeterred. "We do. But we need to find the rest of our people without starting anything with the commander. Its only been a few weeks since Mount Weather, we dont need-"
"-Another war?" Enyo cuts in knowingly.
Abby sees the information set in for the girl, offering an out. "We can find another way Enyo, you dont have to endanger yourself."
Enyo shakes her head. "Life is a consant fight, Chancellor."
Abby gives Kane a disapproving look and the man offers his explanation. "Her grandfather believes in her, i think after everything we should too."
"There's a difference between believing in her and asking her to put herself in danger." Abby grumbles to him which causes Kane to sigh a little too fondly.
After faking being sick at the sight, which makes both adults shift in their seats, Enyo makes her decision. "Looks like I'm going home."
Octavia taps her back into the present with her collection of knives in hand. "You haven't told my brother have you?"
"Well he's still ignoring me so what do you think?" Enyo snarks, grabbing her own weapons from the floor and walking back to the centre of camp.
Rolling her eyes, Octavia walks alongside her. "I think you both need to pull your heads out of your asses."
"He's your brother you should know how to snap him out of it." Enyo replies, a little defensive.
At the youngest Blakes silence, they both stop to face eachother. "I'm worried about him, En. He never talks to me about things like this and neither do i but thats why it helps to have Lincoln."
"Hey," the redhead interupts her friend, "I'll talk to him when i get back okay? No more Miss Nice Enyo."
Octavia snorts, a habit she picked up from her friend. "Since when are you nice?"
Before she can reply to her rude comment, dark arms wrap around Octavia from behind and the girl leans into him.
Kissing her head lightly, Lincoln directs his question to both girls, eyeing their weapons in hands. "And where have you two ladies been?"
"Browsing for flowers." Enyo answers innocently, the winter air sweeping their skin.
Octavia looks up at her boyfriend, batting her eyelashes sweetly. "Training because someone is too busy all the time."
Lincoln squeezes her waist affectionately, ignoring Enyo's gagging noises. "You want to train every minute of every day."
Octavia shrugs, glint in her eye. "Heavy breathing turns me on."
"I have asthma. Watch out Linc better take over training with her." Enyo teases, pushing his arm away when he tries to mess with her hair.
Octavia smiles triumphantly. "She's only saying that because i keep kicking her ass."
At Lincoln's shock, Octavia elbows him a little annoyed but Enyo ignores his eyes and her friends attitude. "Yeah miracles happen, who knew?"
Sensing his best friend's mood, he speaks before Octavia can talk more on the subject. "I was thinking we could eat together in the mess hall when you get back."
At that Octavia turns to scowl at Enyo. "You had time to tell him but not my brother?"
Enyo rolls her eyes. "Firstly, he's my best friend so I tell him pretty much everything. And second, if you're that bothered that he doesn't know why don't you go tell him. Its not a big deal."
"You didnt see him when you disappeared for hours with no explanation a few weeks ago!" Octavia exclaimed, causing heads to turn.
Lincoln tries to hold her back but she keeps going, "which you still haven't explained by the way. Or is that the way it is? We tell you everything but when it comes to you, you're a blank page. Dont think no ones noticed that you still dissappear and come back from who knows where!"
"She shouldn't bother coming back at all." Jasper spits from behind them, having heard Octavia's rising voice.
Enyo, having gotten most of his foul mood directed at her whenever she intercepts him and Monty, rolls her eyes and attempts to walk away.
But Jaspers voice stops her, "Youve got no real reason to stay! Abrahams not coming back so you might as well go! We only put up with you for him."
During his drunken slurs, Enyo slowly pivots on the spot, turning to face him. The middle of camp doesnt go silent so much as quieter in a wary atmoshphere, workers slowing in their work, all eyes on them. Lincoln recognises Enyo's movements, the way her back and shoulders curl forward a little, her nose twitching in a snarl, eyes piercing, she only does this when something strikes her heart, when she turns wild like an animal ready to take down its competitor for her territory.
Jasper sees the change in her mood, as does those who watch, but decides to push her further, make her hurt as much as him. "That hit a nerve huh?"
"Jasper." Lincoln warns loosening his hold on Octavia, ready to step away from her.
But with the amount that he's had, lack of sleep and buried in nothing but his sorrows, Jasper doesn't relent. "Yeah truth hurts doesnt it? But i dont see you beating yourself up about it too much,"
Octavia grabs his arm to hold him back but he shakes her off, stepping forward. "Yeah," he continues tauntingly, "give it a few days and thats it? All cried out. Or do you need to kill some more? Ive heard that's what your good at."
"Jasper that's enough." Lincoln demands more sternly, gripping his arms non too gently.
The boys scuffle for control until Jasper's sloppy movements become a bit more manic and Octavia shoves him away from Lincoln. Enyo sees his anger directed at her best friend now, sees Jasper get in his face and stalks towards him, gets in Jaspers line of sight. "You sticking up for her now? Oh i forgot all grounders stick together. Draw blood or drink it in your case."
Freezing in place, Lincoln feels his blood boil, his hands aching to reach out and do as Jasper says. He feels the cravings he's been trying to ignore so much since the drug, he feels the withdrawals, the shaking in his bones, and the shame in his heart. But he hears his own words to Clarke echo in his mind after he recovered the first time; We've all got a monster inside of us, Clarke. And we're all responsible for what it does when we let it out.
Unfortunately Enyo didnt get the memo, and she didnt much care for it, snarling in a growl as she launches herself towards him but she doesnt get far, Bellamy wrapping his arms firmly around her waist. She throws herself towards him again but Bellamy murmurs in her ear, few words and she calms, stops fighting him and watches as Octavia takes Jasper away.
Breaths evening out from the strength of holding her back, Bellamy asks her, "You alright?"
As much as she's suddenly feeling warm and safe in his arms, she isnt selfish enough to let herself enjoy it for long. But Bellamy felt the way she melted when he asked, how she let him hold her up for just a few seconds, which is the most vulnerable she's been in public since the funeral. It never escapes him that all the times she's allowed herself to be vulnerable he's been there, either just the two of them or among others, but she chooses to let him see it.
Enyo pulls out of his sculpted arms and goes over to her best friend. "Linc?"
Lincoln doesnt attempt a smile, knows she'll see right through it, instead just nods, squeezing her arm.
"We'll talk when I get back." She assures and at the same time declares it, which makes Lincolns frame ease.
Although she can see his concern in his eyes she also sees his trust. So when he nods again she knows he wants her to be careful. Believes she can get the job done.
As he walks away she turns to face Bellamy and sees her mistake. "Going somewhere?"
She doesn't see the point in lying to him, never wants to. "One of Trikru's villages. Kane thinks that Indra can help find the rest of your people without starting a war."
Clenching his jaw, his stature becomes rigid along with his tone. "Why you? Why not Lincoln?"
Enyo frowns, taking slight offence. "Because Kane asked me and Lincoln will have a kill order on his head. Lexa doesn't take people leaving the coalition likely."
"Yeah i forgot she likes to honour her deals." Bellamy snarks, looking at the ghosts that will never leave his people's eyes.
Enyo sighs, she understands where he's coming from but this is her life. "Bellamy i need to go, I'll see you when i get back."
"If you're going then I'm going with you." Bellamy declares, and Enyo would normally try to fight it, say she's more than capable of doing it alone. But she sees the panic in his eyes, the concern, and maybe even desperation. And yeah she gets that, whenever she doesn't see him for a while in camp she worries. She just needs him safe.
Enyo steps toward him. "Okay. But only you and me. And you'll need to bring a pack."
Bellamy searches her face, silently communicating with her. She rolls her eyes. "I wasnt going to just slip away while you got your stuff but fine I'll come with you."
...........
The air is the coldest it will ever be in this part of the country, the last snowfall days ago, leaving behind a shallow amount on the ground. Shallow enough that one set of footprints will make way to reveal the dark, dead ground beneath. Enyo supposes winter, like Earth, is a metaphor in itself. And ironically, winter is her favourite season.
She lets the reasons of that refresh her on their walk, the woods a nice quiet compared to the uneasy one they're accustomed to. Although she's aware that Bellamy doesnt seem to know the difference.
"Relax, Bellamy. The only time we'll see them is if we come across hunting parties, other than that they don't linger when they dont have to." She assures him, nudging his arm when she's done to let him know she's serious.
They haven't spoken since they left camp and Enyo isnt sure whether or not she's disappointed or relieved. Instead of answering, he sighs but she sees his shoulders ease a little, the grip on his gun loosen ever so slightly.
The walk wont take much longer before they have no choice but to become silent and stealthy in order for their plan to work. But until then they have the choice to and if Bellamy doesnt seem to take the hint then Enyo knows exactly what to do to make him talk; Bring up a topic that he hates but has opinions on. If there's one thing she knows about Bellamy Blake It's that he has strong opinions on everything. Its one of their many differences.
So she gets the ball rolling with a flippant; "So you hate Lexa."
The statement seems to startle Bellamy and Enyo prides herself on being able to surprise him. "You don't?"
Enyo considers it with a smirk. "Hate is a strong word."
"Yeah and it's the right one." Bellamy replies, though she can tell the silence is over and she's won.
Bellamy eyes her for half a minute, trying to see why she would bring this up. "Even after she abandoned us, you don't hate her? After she left TonDC to a missle?"
"I know what she's done." Enyo says evenly, expecting what he would've said. "And its not like it will come without its consequences."
"What do you mean?" Bellamy asks.
Enyo looks at him as they walk, her footsteps sure depite not watching where she's going. "We might be savages Bellamy but if there's one thing my people believe in is faith and honour. Our commanders are here to lead and protect us. But making such a public alliance with helpful allies and then leaving them to die? That's not something people will take likely."
Bellamy doesn't want war being close to his people but he refuses to ever help the commander if it does happen. "What do you think they'll do to her?"
Enyo thinks about it, about how religious her people are. "I doubt anything big will happen." She explains as if she's read his mind, and at this point it really wouldn't surprise him if she could. "But some people don't really have that much belief in the flame anymore. This might be the final push for them." And then to his curious look, "The flame is how our commanders are chosen."
Bellamy considers her as he holds up a branch out of her way so she can continue to walk beside him. "Are you one of those people?"
Enyo smirks at him ruefully but shrugs. "My family have never been believers in it. I'm not sure what i believe in anymore."
At her distant tone he nudges her playfully. "You'll figure it out." He declares, resolute.
She raises her eyebrows, smile small but there. "You believe that?"
"I know it." His response is immediate and serious that Enyo feels a flush in her face, and knowing how her face goes completely red when that happens she looks away from him. Bellamy clears his throat, thinking he's said too much and made her uncomfortable. "You're incapable of not figuring things out." He teases, still serious but playful enough to diffuse whatever tension is between them.
"I still haven't figured out why you've been avoiding me." She admits, and he knows he shouldve expected her blunt nature.
Bellamy figures there's no harm in giving it back. "I still haven't figured out why you'd go for Jasper this morning."
Enyo rolls her eyes. "Nice diversion tactic. Wrong girl to use it on."
Bellamy huffs out a laugh at her defiant stare, daring him to challenge her, as if he ever would. "I'm aware of it."
"Look I'm not going to force you to talk or give me a reason, you know that. Or you should." She says putting her hand in front of him so they both come to a stop. "But at least tell someone. Im not an idiot, Bell. I know when somethings bothering you."
"Enyo," Bellamy starts, about to deny her but they both know its useless.
She shakes her head, she needs him to hear her. "Octavia's worried and so am i. Avoid me all you want, just talk to her."
She walks ahead of him from then on and before he gets the chance to reach out to her, movement ahead of them catches his eye and they both drop to the ground.
"Here goes nothing." Enyo whispers to the wind.
.............
It goes like this; Cause a big distraction, nothing that would make people suspicious except Indra. Then Enyo would go in with a brown dye on her hair to disgise her as a brunette, which she washed out immediately after she left. And she would get Indra alone to talk.
It's in no way a perfect plan. Rick plays the first part, being the only one of the three of them still with access to walk right in and no one batt an eyelid. Well almost no one. Indra doesn't miss a damn thing and as soon as he enters her village, her catlike eyes are on him and his every movement. So when he starts causing a big dramatic entrance its fair to say Indra plans to intercept him the second she gets close.
"You gotta admire his entrance technique." Bellamy murmurs, impressed.
Enyo rolls her eyes, fond and annoyed. "Of course you have a thing for dramatic entrances."
Just as she's about to sneak in, Bellamy's voice reaches her. "Be careful."
"That's your middle name remember?" She teases, walking away from where he's hidden behind a hill bank.
She walks right through the village, unrecognised despite it being filled with the people who's known her all her life, friends who's shes sparred with, kids who she's looked after and people she's lead through battle. Yet none of them see her. And maybe that had always been the problem.
Bellamy notices it too, and despite their plan being good, its not that good. Not that good to foul people who are looking right at Enyo and not seeing that its her. That they don't recognise the way she carries herself, the way her face contorts into a mask of indifference yet it can be anything but. Bellamy would recognise her anywhere, no matter how she changed her appearance, he would see her even after just months of knowing her. And it baffles him that they don't. That they can't. That is something he can't imagine.
Enyo sees Rick about to give Indra the slip in her own cabin. And after taking a look back to where she knows Bellamy is hidden, she goes into the warrior womans home and comes face to face with her. In all the time she's known Indra, when she's seen the woman rise through the ranks of leadership, when she's seen Indras own daughter abandon her for her faith, she's never seen the woman look more surprised than she does right now.
"Nice to see you too." Enyo greets.
Indra recovers from shock like most have to; quickly. "The commander said you were dead."
"I was." She admits, "but im here now and I'm guessing the commander wont be jumping with joy about it."
Indra studies her in the way only she can do. "You've been with Lincoln and Skaikru?"
Enyo nods. "Yes, they helped heal me from the injuries i gained in Mount Weather."
"And your grandfather's immature antics? I assume that was a part of this ploy." Indra replies, unimpressed as she sits at her war table.
Enyo takes the seat opposite her, arms on the table, hands clasped. "what makes you think this is a ploy?"
Indra is dressed in less armour than she is normally but its clear she still has the same amount of weapons on her. "You could have just come back and walked in without making that much of a scene."
"I did just walk in. Besides there's advantages of being a ghost." Enyo sighs.
Indra narrows her eyes, sees the lie she told. "If that was true you wouldn't be here. You always hated peace."
"I hate not having anything to do." Enyo corrects, but she smiles that the woman she's always admired knows her a little better than she thought. "And Im here on behalf of Kane, he seems to think that you'll be willing to help him."
"Help him with what?" Indra asks, confirming Enyo's suspicion of a friendship between the two.
Enyo takes out the radio from within her fur coat and puts it in the middle of the table. "If you hear of anything that would make you think that Skaikru should be concerned for their people then you warn them. Set up a meeting with just Kane and you if its regarding the commander and what shes said about their clan. Because lets face it she's going to have to face what shes done at some point."
The older woman listens to the young girls diplomatic voice and knows the rumours to be true. She wishes that she could have been the one to advice Enyo instead of Anya. From the moment Gaia left Indra knew that she would have to find a prodigy, someone who would lead armies much like Indra has herself. But Enyo was meant for greater than that. Is what Anya had said to her, and Indra is starting to believe so.
It all starts with one choice.
.................
Bellamy tries to prevent himself from the urge to figit, but the longer Enyo's in there, the more he can't resist. Will she even come back with him? Will she choose to stay with the people that she grew up with? He doesn't know why she'd chose to stay with him, with their friends too, but he hopes in everything that she does. He's not sure if he could go back without her, especially while she thinks he's avoiding her because he wants to.
He hears a loud crack in the woods behind him before he realises it was on purpose.
"Relax, Belomi. I was just coming to say goodbye." Rick greets, coming to sit next to him.
Bellamy lowers his gun and relaxes slightly. "Your staying here?" He asks, feeling as if his hopes will be doomed soon.
Rick nods. "Until my granddaughter needs me, this is where I'll be." He assures, certain.
"She needs you, you're the only family she's got left. And she's more relaxed with you." Bellamy adds at the end more quiet.
Ricks lips lift at the attempt of casual care the boy had attempted and failed at in his voice. "Thats because she's my little warrior."
Bellamy looks at him, smiling at the nickname he knows Enyo must hate if he still uses it. He wonders if this is what all grandparents and their grandchildrens relationships entail; parental concern but less intense, sibling commarderie without the complete bond, more wise and carefree, but with love.
Ricks unsure of what exactly this boy and his granddaughter are doing, what their relationship entails, but he has been observing how skaikru treat Enyo like he said he would. And one thing is very clear to him; the way Bellamy Blake cares for her, and she for him, is different than any other relationship she has had.
So he feels the need to reasurre the boy. "You know Enyo is simliar to how i was when i was a boy. I think thats why we are as close as we are, no matter the distance. And the way she is with you, my boy," he starts looking a suddenly nervous Bellamy in the eye, "is something neither of you will ever be able to replace."
Bellamy swallows, clears his throat and nods a little on auto pilot.
Taking pity on him just this once, he continues his tale on Enyo, giving Bellamy his out. "I am big headed enough to admit that i was Enyo's favourite parental figure."
"She mentioned her grandmother taught her to write, told her stories on revolutionary women." Bellamy adds in, hoping its enough to derail whatever inspection he was getting.
Chuckling, the elder grounder smiles. "Well thats the thing about those two;" and upon Bellamy's intrigue he continues, smile turning into a grin, as if he's about to share a family secret, and once he hears it, he knows it must be. "They were both redheads. They have fiery tempers, fiery souls, but at the end of the day...if you have a redhead in your corner, your lucky as they will protect you more feircely than anyone else in the world."
Bellamy's lips quirk up at the pretty accurate description of what he already knows to be true, voice full of amusement. "Sounds like you had your hands full."
Rick responds with a chuckle of his own but Bellamy sees that the topic of his dead, wife? Dead girlfriend? He wasn't quite sure but the man's smile had withered into a one of longing, but healed none the less. He wonders how long that takes and if he'll ever get to that point after the things he's done.
The elder mans voice snaps him back, his tone fond and exasperated. "Anyway, as much as Enyo looked up to her grandmother, she prefers to spend time with the opposite gender. Probably because she had Abraham and Lincoln and me throughout her life. We were more dependable than her mother." At the mention of Fiona, Rick seems quick to change the subject, "Now she just finds it easier to bond with males, i was the same when i was a boy, I'd only spend time with people older than me."
Bellamy frowns thoughtfully. "What about Kayla?"
Humming, Rick concedes. "I was talking about friendships. Enyo seems to get competitive with other women, so she doesn't often befriend them. The only person she fell in love with was Kayla so maybe thats why she's reluctant to even have friendships. Thats why i was so surprised with her friendships within the kids that came down first. Particularly Harper and Raven."
Bellamy knows that it hadn't been easy for Enyo to integrate herself with them in the beginning, that her and Raven didnt exactly hit it off but that must be written on his face enough for Rick to see.
"Cosey." Enyo interrupts their silence, startling Bellamy while Rick just smiles. She pushes herself off against the tree she was leaning on, coming closer to stand with them as they get up.
"How'd it go?" Bellamy aks, immediately.
Enyo shrugs. "As well as expected. She's agreed to keep in touch and even offered some locations of where she thinks some of the ark stations landed." She sounds about as much surprised as Bellamy feels.
"Well the plan worked, your welcome by the way, shouldn't you two be on your way back now?" Rick boasts, and suddenly the fear is back for Bellamy.
Enyo frowns immediately, stepping closer to her grandfather. "Your staying?"
Rick places his hands on her shoulders, grip firm but face gentle. "You summon me and I'm there, my little warrior." He kisses her forhead in lieu of goodbye, ignoring her scowl at the nickname.
He turns to Bellamy and notices the boy straighten up even more which makes him smile, and when they shake hands, Rick steps in to mutter in his ear. "She's in your corner."
The comment causes Bellamy to smile sheepishly, his ears turning a light shade of pink as they leave Rick, walking back through the forest.
..............
The silence isn't as aukward as it was before but it was clear that Enyo had something she wanted to say, something on her mind. They weren't that far out from camp but Bellamy noticed her pace was starting to slow down, almost as if she was prolonging their time in the woods.
So obviously Bellamy started thinking the worst but hoping for the best. He just needed to know what was on her mind.
"How do your people...do grounders get married? What do they call each other when they're together?" Bellamy fumbles, genuinely curious but wanting her to open up.
Enyo frowns at him. "Why? Planning on marrying a grounder?"
"Trying to say you want me to propose to you?" Bellamy teases, but he sees that she's not in the mood for it.
So he sighs and shrugs, honest. "Rick was talking about her earlier but he didn't call her anything. And lincoln never calls O his girlfriend."
Enyo seems to battle the war in her mind, but answers after some thought. "Yes we get betrothed and then married. We call eachother whatever we want; although 'boyfriend and girlfriend' were really replaced with 'partner or chosen'."
Out of all the grounder traditions, Bellamy actually likes that one, how their terms seems to be more equal, less like possession and more like a choice. He wonders what Enyo preferred to call Kayla, he wonders what she would call someone else now.
Only a couple more miles back to Arkadia now and Enyo seems to be ready to get something off her chest. "You were nervous because i went there today. Our whole way here you've stayed close, like you're trying to protect me. Is this because I got stabbed or because you dont trust them?"
Bellamy shakes his head immediately. "Its not because of that. I dont trust them after what happened, no, but that's not the whole reason."
"So what is the reason?" Enyo asks, her dont-bullshit-me-tone piercing him.
"Because they thought you were dead!" He bursts out, and he can't help but to let it keep going. "And if they think your dead, even for a while then your safe! They can't turn up at the gates like they did with Finn and kill you." By the end his voice went from desperate and stressed to sincere and earnest concern.
Enyo searches his face for a moment and then looks to the ground. Realises that it can't have been easy for him if he knows she disappears every 2 days before dawn. But of course he knows its Bellamy. He's been mothering all of the delinquents. "I need to show you something."
Bellamy, doing a double take because that was not the answer he expected, frowns confused. "Show me what?"
"Where I've been going every two days." She declares with enough finality that he wouldn't have questioned her anyway.
He follows her as she changes direction, sees her clenched fists, her frame uncomfortably tight almost as if she's going to combust. Her speed has picked up, her small, toned legs working over time whereas his steps are half of the ones shes taking. Still, its an effort for him to keep up with her, and keep his eyes off her legs.
"Enyo, you don't have to show me anything." He offered, the same reassurance that she offered to him earlier.
But like him, she doesn't respond but not because they're interupted but because instead she walks impossibly faster without actually running. He's out of breath after a while and he thinks about shouting to her, worried about her frame of mind when she stops and its then that his mind finally starts again after submitting to his focus purely on her. That he finally focuses on where theyve ended up, where shes taken him.
Mount Weather.
They're stood what must be the top of the mountain but he can see a door which undoubtedly leads into the depths of the horror that this place was. The field, which might have been a meadow with how tall the grass was and the amount of dead flowers due to winter, had a patch of the tall grass missing at the other side of the hill.
"Come on." Enyo murmured, leading him to the truth of her whereabouts.
And there, plain as day, were more than two dozen graves, the shovel stuck in the mud next to the last one. Some were in groups spread a little apart from the rest, some were alone or paired in two's.
"This is what ive been doing, where ive been going before dawn every two days." She explains, somber. "I only dig graves for the innocent; the children, the people who helped us. I've been burning the guilty."
It strikes Bellamy's heart with both pain and warming affection that Enyo had been taking care of the bodies inside Mount Weather, that she'd been so considerate to the people that were no longer here, that caused her so much pain. That she'd been going down there all alone, surrounded by death and he'd just been thinking that she would leave him.
His attention is caught on the two graves that must've been dug first, given the dirt is more formed, which are closer to the hill side and he instantly knows who they belong to.
"Maya and Vincent." Bellamy breathes, grief caught in his throat.
Enyo sniffs, wiping her nose with her fur coats sleeve. "What Jasper said earlier...it was true. I am good at killing people."
Bellamy looks at her after tearing his eyes away from the horror of what they had to do, the promise he had to break, the line they crossed.
She takes a shuddering breath, voice controlled but filled with the grief he didn't know she had. "I am no Saint i know that. But ive never killed unarmed people before, it's a code of mine i always lived by even through my darkest years; never kill someone who isn't armed, someone who doesn't deserve it..." she swallows a sob as she continues. "Never kill a child."
"In battle, when there was a child soldier stood in front of me...i never took the shot. I always let someone else kill them because i couldn't do it, i couldn't stop seeing my little brother in every one of them." She huffs a laugh, no humour just pure self loathing. "That didn't make what i did right, i still have their deaths on my conscience but this," she gestures around them, to the graves, to the mountain and whats inside of it. "I know you all think that i don't regret what happened, that it was just another load of people that i killed and i dont care... well your not wrong."
He can sense it in her voice, the amount that she does care and he knows it to be true but he also know that now she's being honest. She does care but she can also be ruthless. It's one of her qualities he used to find intimidating, if he's honest he still does.
Enyo continues to stare upon the graves. "I don't regret killing the guilty. Cage, Dante, the ones who helped them. But killing the innocent, that i do regret. And digging their graves wont change anything, it won't make up for it. But i just had to."
Bellamy nods, automatically understanding. "Have you burned the rest or do we have more to dig?"
The 'we' isnt lost on Enyo and she sees his grief too, his need to do this like her. "I figured you'd know if I've missed anyone."
He doesn't smile at the call back to their earlier conversation, doesn't know if it was on purpose but knowing her it was, but his eyes lighten as does his heart a fraction.
Together they go into Mount Weather and collect whats left of the bodies to place in graves, and then for the ones that will burn in the doorway. According to Enyo, she thinks its fitting for the guilty ones to burn right behind the door to the outside because they don't get their wish even in death. He can't say he blames her for that either, but he's too tired from dragging the bodies to argue with her about it. Not that he would anyway. If this is what she needs as some semblance of peace then he'll do whatever he can to give it to her.
It's harder than he thought it would be. The faces of the dead all charred and burnt from radiation anyway, the smell metallic and crisp enough to ripen his airway in ways he doesn't appreciate but won't ever complain about. After today their faces will definitely greet him in his sleep, but they were doing that anyway and he won't let Enyo do this alone. Not when they pulled that lever and killed all these people together.
"Why didn't you tell me?" He asked when they were back outside, the sun soon going down.
Enyo watches him dig the last of the graves, he'd firmly insisted seeing as she dug the rest, holding one of the necklaces around her neck. "I couldn't sleep thinking about it and before i even knew where i was going i ended up here. It had to be me."
Bellamy shakes his head, wiping the sweat from it as he continues to refill over the body in the grave gently. "You aren't alone in this. We pulled that lever together." He reminded.
"Maybe not," she shrugs, picking at the dead grass. "But for every person i killed, how can i not think that there's someone out there crying for them like i cried for my brother? Except this time i crossed my line and killed everyone that i promised myself i wouldnt."
Bellamy scowls at her. "You think i didn't promise them that too?"
Enyo scowls back, tears in her eyes. "This is different."
"How?!" Bellamy stops digging, his attention soley one her.
"Because I've never killed a child before!" She yells back, baring her soul to him. The very ghosts that haunt her. "My people expected that of me! Expected me to show no weakness. Your people think that this is who i am on the regular basis! That i am this ruthless child killer. And now I'm everything this world wanted me to be."
Bellamy stays silent, finishing up the grave and coming to sit next to her on the edge of the hill. He can see why she chose to have the graves in this exact spot now because of the view, maybe because it was far enough away from the door to where they spent their lives. Their world began in there, but they were on the edge of that and on the edge of the world they never got to explore. Although she doesn't say it, he knows them all to be true. It stuns him with how beautifully poetic she can be, how considerate it makes her. It makes him think of how he called himself a monster on their day trip, how he was at his lowest and she picked him up. He could tell her he needs her, that she isnt a monster, but he doesn't think thats what she needs right now.
So he goes with silent comfort, only offering the truth. "I've been avoiding you because of the nightmares i have when i sleep. If i can. I know you'd wanna help me like you've helped everyone else but i didnt wanna to burden you. Not after everything."
"You mean youd feel guilty for feeling guilty if you talked to me about the mountain men." Enyo summarised, figuring out what he didnt say.
He shrugs, she's the only person he wants to talk about most things with but he isn't good with letting himself be happy in any way.
Enyo seems to follow his example. "I went after Jasper because he threw what happened to Lincoln back in his face, and he brought my brother into it."
Bellamy sighs. "Want me to talk to him?"
She huffs. "He hates you just as much as he hates me. There's nothing you can say."
"I'll get Abby to talk to him then." Bellamy responds, serious.
Enyo smiles. "And make it a crime for Jasper to be mean to me?"
Bellamy grumbles something that sounds like "i meant to anyone." But she sees the slight flush and puts her arm around his shoulder.
"Thanks, Bell. But I'll be fine and so will you." She sighs, leaning her head against his as they watch the sunset.
Butterflies in his stomach and a racing heart, Bellamy offers the truth before the sun disappears for the night. "They'd love this view."
