Enyo's POV....
Stalking through the woods hunting for my own lunch, i reminisced what happened a couple of hours ago. Got up, had breakfast, sparred with my friends, witnessed a ship descending into our territory, had a fear riddled heart attack, recovered from said heart attack when i found Abe, saw that the enemy was attacked, helped enemy after brother's pleading, met some more of the enemys who seemed rude, and then left them to deal with their injured friend. The only reason i hadn't gone back to my village was because there was a chance that i wouldn't live to see another day. Helping the enemy was treason. Something that you know too well..., dark part of my mind whispered. Apparently my brother was not aware of this or he just assumed he could bullshit his and my way out of it. Either way, if i came back empty handed it would luck suspicious. Being Anya's second and most trusted advisor was what i was known for (among other things) among the other clans, but in my own i was known for a number of things as well as being a successful hunter. Although only my best friends knew that i hated killing the animals. It was a weakness that i couldn't afford to show to the rest of my clan but when i kill the animals i say more to them than, " yu gonplei ste odon" which is probably why i feel so guilty, i didnt get a chance to say anything to the panther but stupid taunts before i killed it. A grounder warrior feeling guilty over killing their food source if i dont get to say comforting words to them before i end their life. Ridiculous.
"BELLAMY! BELLAMY PLEASE!" a distant voice wailed. Knife sheaved i decide to stay quiet. Bellamy?..one of the boys i met earlier. Although i couldnt tell which one as Wells wasnt too specific to point. Walking closer to the fear filled voice i realised i was closer to the enemys camp than i noticed, if the smell of burning panther meat was any indication. Well done, your learning, i thought. Cautiously walking through the dark forest i stopped behind a thicket of bushes when i spotted the source of the cries. What is it with you people? Do i have to meet all of you like this? There strung not too high in the tree was a boy, dangling from his hands that were bound above him. It was obvious that this was a punishment or torture as no one was put in such an uncomfortable position for fun. Mindful of the scared boy, whose shouts for Bellamy slowly faded, i monouvered up the other side of the tree like i had done a million times before, before coming to a stop next to his hands. It was only then that he seemed to notice me. -i am going to skip this part as i intended it to be more on Bellamy and Enyo's interaction than anyone else. But it may come up again as a flashback or something if requested-.
.........
I dreamt of dark hair and darker eyes, of bronze skin and lengthened glances, but not the same dreams I'm used to and not with the same person either...shaking out of my reverie i feel my feet being swept out from under me until my back hits the ground with a painful thud. Recovering quickly,i hear a deep chuckle from above me. "Ge smak duan, gyon op nodotaim." Get knocked down, get back up.
Scowling at Anya i reply, "shof op." Shut up. To others i was bold to speak so disrespectful to our leader, but that was what Anya admired about me and why she most trusted me...i couldn't not be blunt. Still on my back, Anya surveyed me with a critical eye, knowing only one of two things that can cause me to be distracted.
"Hodnes laik kwelnes." Love is weakness. Anya spoke gently, reading my mind. With the gentleness from my normally angry clan leader i knew that she wasnt referring to my brother. I nodded my head, swallowing my emotions down to keep my face impassive. And whilst leaning up from my forearms, i grabbed my spear and wedged it between Anya's legs, causing her to loose her balance and tumble to the ground.
Smirking down at her, i leave her to get up herself as i need to get ready to go hunting with my friends. Heading out of the village i feel a tug at my sleave, looking down to see my brother Abraham. We hadnt had a chance to talk since i got back from saving Jasper and talking to Atom as Anya had required my presence as she questioned her warriors and their whereabouts. I had to conceal my smirk of pride when they had actually believed whatever wild goose chase my brother had caused them to go on, he really was a little genius. Nodding to him, we stayed silent whilst the rest of my friends agreed to split off in pairs and i wondered off with my brother.
"They okay? The crazy boy?" He whispered still unsure if we were completely alone.
Scouting the area one last time i nodded to him, squeezing his shoulder in reassurance.
"It can't happen again Abe. You know what would happen if we got caught helping them." I told him sternly, Anya's words still fresh in my mind.
"We won't. And even if we do I'll just lie...its the only thing im actually good at." He mumbled, breaking my heart. He's aware that i don't believe that but no matter how much i try to convince him, he doesn't believe me.
"And what about me? You know if Anya or Tristan supsects then they will use you against me. Then what? Because if i have to choose between the enemy and keeping you alive, the choice is easy." And I've never believed anything more than what i just said.
Shrugging, Abe replies, "please. In their eyes you can do no wrong."
This argument was more common than not, and my brother was more stubborn than i was so there was no changing his mind. So i let him walk away in the opposite direction, letting him cool off. He wasn't wrong exactly, i was respected, feared and loved among some of the clans but i never feel like myself. I always have to wear a mask of emotionless indifference, pushing down my emotions for the logical reasons. Like when Anya and me travel to polis to meet with the other ambassadors, she depends on me to reign her in when they anger her. She wasn't balanced like me. But i hardly ever got to show my emotions. Never got to be human. Maybe that's why i felt a twinge of longing when i saw the enemy having fun before Jasper got speared.
"I almost killed you." A deep, masculine voice sounded from further ahead. Frowning, i clutched my long knife as i listened in.
"Its not safe out here for a little girl." I recognised that voice as Atoms and stepped out in their sight before i could think better of it.
"What just cause she's small and a girl means she can't hold her own?" I snorted at Atom. He seemed shocked to see me as did the little girl, who said her name was Charlotte and the same man who held the same gun at me not too long ago. But after a few moments Atom smiled and greeted me with a simple joke, "here to kill me?"
I smirked and rolled my eyes, "would you believe me if i said no?"
The man with the gun eyed us before speaking up, "you two know each other?"
"No shit. Give this guy a round of applause." I stepped closer but made no move to conceal my weapon and neither did he.
"That's Bellamy." Atom supplied helpfully. Oh. After meeting Atom we talked a lot about how he ended up like he did and Bellamy was the name of the cocky, carefree leader of the sky kids. The older brother of the girl Atom was crushing on. Atom also mentioned the one child policy in space, which made no sense to Enyo but she figured everyone has their beliefs. I couldn't imagine my life without my brother, which was probably why Bellamy was so overprotective of his sibling.
"Enyo. But we've met already." I turned from facing Bellamy and gave what i hope was a reassuring smile to Charlotte, " i won't hurt you."
Bellamy snorted, stepping inbetween me and the little girl, "tell that to the guy in the dropship."
Glaring at him in defiance i stepped closer, noting the same nonchalant expression as one I'd use when acting fearless.
But before i had chance to reply, i heard the familiar horn used by our people to warn others of the acid fog. Remembering who i had came out here with i blindly looked around for my brother in panic, realising he was alone and probably too far for me to get to in time. The sky kids must have noticed my unease as Atom asked, "what is that?"
Turning i saw the veil-like yellow fog make its way towards us at a rapid pace. It slithered its way through the forest and i was trembling on the familiar adrenaline when coming face to face with this threat. I glanced at the others, wondering if i should up and leave them to save themselves but decided against it.
"RUN! INTO THE CAVES, GO!" i yelled at them pushing Bellamy's firm chest until he sprung into action, making sure Charlotte was in front of him whilst he ran. Speeding through the trees i shouted directions to the caves which Bellamy surprisingly listened to. Once almost there, i heard Atom scream out for help and saw that the fog had consumed his feet and were making quick work up his legs. Sprinting towards him, i grabbed his hands and pulled him away, not sure if i really saved him at this point. He couldnt walk so most his weight was on me as we fell down the small hill that led to the front of the cave. Feeling a tingling burning sensation on my left hand i screamed in pain and shoved Atom non too gently so we were out of harms way. Panting i fell to the ground beside him, clutching my hand to my chest.
"Enyo.." Atom grunted in pain, gritting his teeth and grasping his thighs. I grabbed hold of his hands again pulling him deeper into the cave, despite my hand trembling in protest and pain. Bellamy looked up from where he was slouching against the wall, Charlotte not too far from him. He seemed surprised that we'd made it and then noticed Atoms painful grunts and moans.
"Is he okay?" Charlotte asked, seeming to figure that the threat outside was more scary than me. I looked at Bellamy and he didn't seem to remember to keep up the bravado act as fear was etched onto his face as he watched his friend.
Instead of answering i crouched next to Atoms legs, taking a deep breath, putting my emotions on the back seat for a minute. As gently as i could, i started to pull up Atoms pants trying to survey the damage. His legs were badly burnt to the point where I could actually smell his flesh burning and ignoring his grunts, i pulled them back down.
"You have a healer right?" The question was directed at Bellamy but he was still frozen in the spot. Atom nodded mentioning Clarke and i nodded along, stroking his hair in comfort. It wouldn't do much but it was the best i could do...where's my mother when you need her?
"For a...second there...i thought you were gunna...leave us behind." Atom breathed between pants. I placed my thumb over his furrowed eyebrows and smoothed it until his face seemed more relaxed. I heard rustling behind me and assumed the others knew that they were going to have to wait to take him home until the fog cleared.
"Yeah, not going to lie, it crossed my mind." I admitted trying to lighten the mood.
"But you didnt...thank you." Atom whispered before passing out from the pain. I didnt have anything that could help reduce that so i just placed my warrior coat over his legs to keep the cold air from them as my hand was throbbing from the exposure to it. There had been others in my clan that had been injured by the fog before but never to Atoms extent. And if they were then they didn't make it to first light. I sat down further towards the cave entrance surveying my burnt hand, when i heard footsteps walking up next to me. I looked up surprised to see that it was Bellamy that had come to me.
"Why didn't you leave us behind?" Bellamy asked clearly dumbfounded and accusatory. I gestured for him to take a seat, and after hesitating he did, making his way to the opposite wall but still between me and his people.
"Figured you needed a break." Shrugging whilst remaining eye contact.
That answer wasnt good enough for him as he narrowed his eyes and challenged, "your people dont want us alive. Yet you keep saving us. Why? Why go against them?"
I rolled my eyes, "just because they're my people, doesn't mean i have to agree with everything they do."
This answer wasnt challenged and when i looked back up he was clearly trying to figure me out. I took this opportunity to do the same and file away some details about him. Like how he already has so many freckles dotting his cheeks when he hasn't been on Earth that long. Or how his hair looks so naturally curly yet like he's just gotton out of bed. How his broad shoulders are tense as if he is use to the weight of it.
"So you think helping us is the right thing to do? You grounders don't seem that well mannered." I almost snorted at the most obvious name in the world, but thought better of it, seeing as though he was finally opening up to me.
"I could say the same thing about you." Seeing his frown deepen i continue, "you strung up your friend because he flirted with your sister, you wanted me to kill Clarke when we first met, and your ancestors left mine to die on the ground after the world ended."
Bellamy didn't seem to think before he answered, "thats not my fault, sunshine."
I threw him my most menacing glare that had most, if not all, men cowering back in fear. But this prick seemed to just smirk more at my anger at the nickname.
"And it's not my fault my people did what they did." I spat out darkly.
"How many of you are there? Why do they want to kill us?" He questioned which was met by my silence. Just because i keep helping them doesnt mean im going to risk my people's lives. As he continued to badger me with questions, while i stayed unresponsive, I glanced towards the entrance to the cave where the fog was still making it impossible to see beyond 2 feet further out. This is going to be a long night.
....Bellamy's POV ...
The grounder girl seemed more intent on staring at the outside then continuing the conversation. And as much as Bellamy knows he could probably overpower her if he needed, he knew if he wanted to definitely make it back to camp, to Octavia, alive, then he needed to stop trying to piss off his company. He noticed that what she said about not agreeing with her people was genuine but he still didnt completely trust her. After all she did hesitate to help them when the acid fog made its appearance. And she was the enemy...but was she?
Bellamy turned all of his attention to her, still trying to get a read on her. She was cocky, his sister would probably say just like him, definitely confident in who she is but there was something else about her that he just couldn't for the life of him figure out. Goddamit this girl makes him confused. even though there was venom in her voice earlier, he had heard how her voice contained warmth and was somewhat comforting to Atom, and maybe even Jasper too. But she was a grounder. Her people threw a spear from three hundred feet away at one of his people for crossing a goddamm river, that they had no idea was a boundary, on day one. If that didn't scream this won't be a warm welcome. So fuck off. He didn't know what did. Observing her he noticed her body shape was curvy compared to the girls in his camp, probably because grounders didnt have to ration their food. Light skin tone to what he would've expected seen as though she's lived in the sun all her life but she had a lot of freckles to show for it. Her long dazzling aurburn hair covered her face as she wasn't facing him and it was then that he noticed that her leg was bouncing as if she was nervous.
"need to be somewhere?" He asked, slightly amused and a bit more curious to see how much she'd be willing to share.
"Literally anywhere else. But that might just be out of preference." Enyo snarked back, still staring into the fog hazed night. He rolled his eyes but his lips twitched at her sassiness. But now he could see her biting her lower lip, hands wringing in her lap and distant eyes. He knew that look, he wore it every day. Worry for someone you love. Of course all he has is Octavia but he figures that families are probably a lot bigger on the ground given that they don't have a reason to write off having more than one kid. Or it could be a friend. A lover. And as if reading his thoughts, she speaks.
"My brother." Is all she says. And Bellamy knows better than anyone that she doesn't need to clarify. Hearing Atoms, ragged sleeping breaths and Charlottes gentle ones further down the cave as a reminder they're not alone.
"He's the reason i helped your people." Enyo spoke grabbing his attention as he turned to look at her, finding her already staring.
"He's not like the rest of us. He's afraid of everything, except breaking the rules." She smiles slightly as she talks, and Bellamy decides that its a good look on her, although he'll never admit that. He's a little surprised that she's sharing something personal but he can see she'd do anything to keep her brother safe.
"He feels like an outsider which is why he's taken an interest in your people."
Bellamy's never met anyone else who has a sibling before, for obvious reasons, and he doesn't quite know how to describe the feeling. Understanding. Envy that they had it easier down here. Yet the look in her eyes says otherwise. He sees pain, not for her but for her brother so he decides to try to tone down the asshole in him to have a conversation with the girl.
"How old is he?" Seems like an innocent enough question that might help distract her from worrying.
Enyo smiles again, albeit briefly, but its still enough for him to think about how he would like to see a more happy one. No.Bellamy. jesus. Whats wrong with you? She's the enemy. He internally curses at himself.
"He's 10. But he can bullshit his way out of anything." And the way she states it, so proudly, it startles a chuckle out of him. But the noise seems to make her smile a little wider, so he thinks that he can call it a win. He wants to ask how old she is, can't be older than most of the kids in his camp when she seems to read his mind again.
"Im 18."
"Can you bullshit your way out of anything?" He asks, amused.
"Never had to. But I'd not be as good as Abraham."
He remembers the name from history classes on the ark, his favourite lesson, "like Abraham Lincoln?"
Enyo seems confused for a moment at their change of banter but takes it in her stride, "yeah, the guy from hundreds of years ago. Its kind of a funny coincidence but one of my best friends is called Lincoln."
Bellamy smiles fascinated but trying to contain his inner history nerd, "is everyone named after historical figures?" He already got the vibe on their first meeting and the second that this girl, although helping them, wouldn't just give them useful information to use against her people. So this is as much info as he's going to get. And she did save them again. He is capable of cutting her some slack just this once.
Thinking it over she replies, "not everyone. There's a woman named Lexa and i guess she was named after the place called Alexandria, before the world ended. But other than that no."
"Just you then, huh?" He remembered the irony of her saying that her name was Enyo and she was their guardian angel, given what he remembered on mythology his mother use to read to him.
Enyo smirked at him, "my grandmother always told me stories about women who were warriors or revolutionaries. Said she wanted her bloodline to live up to the names if not make history. My mother isnt really like the rest of us either. She's not a warrior like me, so it kind of fell on my shoulders to carry the lineage."
"My sisters name is Octavia, she's 17." Bellamy supplied without really knowing why.
"Like the sister of Augustus, right?" she asked amused but interested. Bellamy smiled and he can't remember smiling at someone that wasnt his sister so genuinely. He nodded and she chuckled, "nice to meet you Augustus."
Bellamy knew she was teasing but he figured he'd let her have this one seeing as though he called her sunshine to piss her off. A aukward pause fell between them as Enyo looked at him nervously.
"You know i was alone when you came for Jasper." She admitted, like she needed to reassure him.
"So none of your people know." He filled in. Bellamy already knew why she had lied; to protect herself. But the fact that she was telling him now, seemed like a big deal. Like she was trying to tell him that it can't happen again.
"Your people have nothing to fear from me Bellamy. "
Bellamy hears the sadness in her voice at the end and he's surprised that deep down he wants to ask her more about herself, about her experiences on the ground.
"But we do have to fear the rest of your people." He realises but her response is put on pause when he hears Charlottes cries of terror. He goes to investigate and after he returns to his spot near Enyo he notes that she has fallen asleep.
A part of him realises that he could take her knives and hold his weight on her to prevent retaliation and try to get information. Not let up until he knows the enemy. But then he remembers how she handled herself against the panther that him and murphy struggled to carry back to camp. He remembers that her strategy against the panther was calculated not accidental. The fact that her name is Enyo and that apparently she has to live up to it. There's also a smaller part of him that doesn't want to and he'd much rather ignore this fact than face it. So he covers her with the strange jacket she selflessly put on Atoms legs, and goes further into the cave to sleep near his people for the night. Its then that he realises just how caught up in conversation he was with her. Completely forgetting shes a grounder gone wild in the cave with them. Later, he sleeps better than he ever has.
In the morning he wakes to find that Enyo has already woken up and left the cave but has left a small shred of paper next to Atom. He stuffs it in his pocket and after reuniting with the rest of his people, and taking Atom, whose still alive, back to camp for Clarke, he lets himself take out the note later that night. It reads:
Thanks for the history lesson, Gus- he smiled down at her wobbly lettering.- my grandmother showed me how to write in your language so forgive the uneven lettering, i haven't written anything since she died. I need to find Abe so i had to leave without goodbye, looked like you need the rest. The fog has cleared. Tell Atom and Jasper that I'll be asking for updates soon. Hope they make it. You too asshole. tell Charlotte that i like her hairstyle. Enyo.
And after he goes to Charlotte to tell her what Enyo said, he sees her smile a little more confidently and he tries to tell himself that, thats the reason he still has a smile on his face when he goes to sleep.
