"This Is What We've Been Waiting For"

Lumina's gut backflipped at the sight of one missing transfer bar. Her teeth chewed on the inside of her cheek, nervously scraping away at the soft flesh inside and leaving a bitter, metallic taste on her tongue.

It has been six hours since Lumina plugged the LapPad into the monitor. Soal fell back into a plush desk chair and unwillingly fell asleep. Lumina tried to start a conversation with Soal a few times, but eventually just watched her try and fight off her closing eyelids.

Lumina yawned, her teeth taking a short rest from her incessant gnawing. Her cheek throbbed.

The last transfer bar glowed on screen. Lumina perked up, her teeth settling on top of one another. The bar flashed a few times, and then the monitor shut off. Lumina pressed a few keys on the keyboard, confused as to what happened, but then the screen returned. Bright orange letters glowed on screen: WELCOME USER TO PROJECT ALTERNATE.

Lumina grinned and shouted for Soal to wake up.

Soal sat straight up in her chair, her sleepy eyes struggling to focus on Lumina. "What is it?" she asked in a panicked voice. "Something wrong?"

"No, Soal. Look!" Lumina moved away from the monitor and waved a hand towards the screen.

Soal squinted, then her face morphed into a look of happiness. "It works!"

"Uh. Uh. Uh. The program works. We have yet to test ALTERNATE out."

"But how can we test it when it's already locked on Ground 2's coordinates?"

"Well... I guess we can just press the button and hope for the best."

Soal placed a hand on her forehead and dragged it down over her face. "Oh boy. Why couldn't we have thought of a test button while we were creating the command prompt?"

"Yeah. Why didn't you?" Lumina asked Soal with a mischievous grin.

Soal frowned and turned back to the screen. "Do you want to try transporting Ground 2 back here?"

"This is what we've been waiting for," Lumina said. "I'm ready to risk everything we got after two years. I'm ready to bring my sister and the civilization of Ground 2 home."

"Alrighty then," Soal said, her thumb over top of the button. She paused and looked at Lumina. "Would you like to do it together?"

Lumina nodded, her thumb readying over Soal's.

Soal raised an eyebrow. "One... Two..."

"Three," called Lumina. Both Soal's and her thumb smashed down onto the button.
