Hera watched Eva's freshly bandaged rib cage quake with heavy, uneven breaths. Eva was asleep still. A side effect of the anesthesia. Upon knowing the surgery was successful, Hera could breathe easier, but not while watching Eva's breath at the moment.
It discouraged her the day before to see her sister, sweat drenched, clammy, and in pain as she lay on the hospital bed. But, now she seemed more peaceful as her body healed, the artificial rib successfully situated inside.
A little while later, when Eva returned to her senses, the doctor came in to explain, in more detail, exactly what they had did for Eva. Hera listened as she stood beside where Eva lay.
The doctor took a small piece of metal from his pocket. It was in the shape of a rib, but indented with little, flexible ridges. "This is an example of what was placed inside of you today, miss Si. We basically had to remove a decent amount of your rib, before we could put, a bigger version of this, inside. Now, you see, it's made of a high-grade metal. It's very light and flexible, like a rib. The ridges are used for extra flexibility. Just think: when you breath in, your rib cage minimally adjusts itself, and when you exhale, your rib cage expands at the slightest. It may hurt at the time being, but that's only because your healing. In about a month or so, you should begin to feel better. Just, I would not recommend, pushing your injury. Rest is key."
Eva gave a slight nod and answered with a tired "okay."
The doctor cast a glance over at Hera. A smile shimmied onto his lips.
"If she didn't get it, I got it," Hera answered.
"Thank - you, Hera Si."
"No problem."
"No! I mean - thank-you for returning us home."
"Oh. You're welcome. But it wasn't all my doing."
"But it was all your mechanical and coding expertise."
"Mostly, but she," Hera pointed at Eva, "and my best friend, Soal Dienze, also brought their mechanical ingenuity and coding skills."
"Well, then, I reserve my thanks for all of you." The doctor left with a smile plastered to his face. Outside the door, Hera could hear him blabbering about meeting her and having her sister as a patient.
Eva's hand searched out Hera's. Their fingers intertwined. Hera looked down at Eva. "Good job, sis" Eva said through breaths.
"Thank-you, but you helped as well. I should be saying the same of you."
"The doctor was right. You did most of the work. You deserve the credit."
Hera sighed.
"You're going to be bombarded with grateful crowds for a long time, Hera."
"I don't want that. I never did any of this for fame."
"No. You're right. But you thought of something nobody else was willing to risk doing. You weren't afraid to face disastrous outcomes. You overcame them instead."
Hera stared at a large dry erase board, thinking about how to reply to that.
"So. You better get used to the crowds. For that's why you're being praised."
Hera squeezed Eva's hand. "But I hope you and Soal will be there to face the crowds along with me."
"Always, little sis."
