Missing Component

Lumina stared in utter horror, and yet, in a weird way, a feeling of comfort. Her sister was alive!

Lumina got to her feet, running ever closer to Ground 1's edge, hollering Eva's name. Air rushed from her lungs, the air expelled forming multiple cries of desperation. But it was all in vain. Eva didn't hear her. Realizing this, Lumina screamed, "Eva listen to me!"

Eva's figure turned, but only for a moment as she went back to doing whatever she was doing.

"Lumina. It's no use," Soal cried from behind her.

Lumina's hands dropped to her side. A grumble lay at the back of her throat. "There has to be some way," Lumina whispered to herself.

Lumina looked down at the toes of her boots. "Do you have my metal soled boots with you in the hover?"

"Yeah. Why?"

"Where are they?"

"The trunk."

Lumina sprinted towards the back end of the hover. As her hand gripped the lever on the trunk, Soal locked the hover with the fob. "Lumina. You have to tell me what insane idea is going through that head of yours."

Lumina looked at Soal with a hint of frustration, but replied in a mild tone. "My metal soled boots are able to balance me on any surface, might it be empty air, water, ground, or in this case, space."

"You're not telling me that you're planning on walking over to Eva are you?" Soal gasped.

"At this point... I'll try anything. Now can you please open the dang trunk?"

Soal gave Lumina a look, but seeing as how Lumina would not change her mind, unwillingly hit the unlock button on her fob. Lumina threw open the trunk, her hands falling to her metal soled boots. She threw them down onto the ground and tore off her regular steel toed ones. She threw those into the trunk and laced up her metal soled boots. After slamming the trunk, she started off for Ground 2. Before stepping off of Ground 1, Soal cleared her throat. Lumina turned around to look at her.

Soal asked, "If those shoes had balance stabilizers, why didn't you walk instead of fly here two years ago?"

Lumina answered, "Would you have done that if there was a quicker alternative?"

Soal's lips quirked a little. "Be careful."

Lumina turned again to Ground 2, braced herself, stepped out into open space... but stopped mid stride. She turned around again; a small smile was upon Soal's face. "You forget something?" she asked, holding up a small red cylinder, clear, nostril sized tubes attached to it.

"Yes. I've been used to breathing naturally for two and a half years."

Soal underhanded the oxygen cylinder to Lumina. Lumina caught it, attached the clip to her belt and inserted the breathing tubes into her nostrils. She coughed - the tingling sensation after inserting the breathing tubes was something to get adjusted to. Then, with a large intake of breath, canistered oxygen flooded Lumina's senses.

Lumina stepped out into open space again. Her other foot followed along this time. There was the slight feeling of weightlessness until the stabilizers in Lumina's boots kicked in. Then, as if walking on solid ground, all she could feel was the void around her. It's hard to describe, but to Lumina, it felt like it would be similar to being frozen in a block of ice.

Her walk was relatively short. The ground of Ground 2 seemed to be stable. Lumina continued to walk forward, Eva in her sights. She called out Eva's name again. Still, Eva did not hear.

Lumina's pace quickened. Thinking it foolish, but still trying, Lumina reached out for Eva. her hand grasped Eva's arm and held on. Eva's arm started to glow and turn into a solid, flesh color. The glow crawled up her arm, spread to her torso, raced up her neck, to her head, the other arm, legs, and everything else until Eva was completely covered. Completed... solid... FORMED.

Eva collapsed. Lumina caught her. Lumina's eyes were wide with awe, her lips tightly drawn together.

Then, softly, Lumina's lips parted. The air that rushed past felt heavy. Her lips slightly trembling, Lumina somehow managed to let Eva's name slip, softly, off of her tongue.

She held her sister tight within her grasp, not willing to let go. She took in the sight that she had last seen. Nothing of Eva had changed. Or... maybe it had. But, without a doubt, it has seemingly reversed itself after Ground 2's transportation back to its home reality. Whatever it was, no matter how old Eva got, or was, Lumina was glad to have her sister back.

Eva's eyelids slowly rose, revealing the hazel irises beneath. She squinted as if seeing behind a glare, at Lumina. Then, with tears squeezing out of their ducts, Eva rose up, her arms wrapping around Lumina and tightly squeezing Lumina within her grasp. "Hera? How could this be that you're here?" Eva asked, her voice muffled by the fabric of Lumina's long sleeve tee.

Lumina released Eva and let her sit up. The scenery around them was still the sickly green, transparent color. But around Lumina, the trail of footsteps that she had made bloomed into their original colors.

"How? You're? You're the one returning the colors and solids back to Ground 2?"

Lumina looked behind her, looked at Eva. "I... I guess."

Eva grasped Lumina's arm. "You're the missing link. The leader of Ground 2, regaining control over your half."

"Hah. Hah. That doesn't make sense."

"Nothing with 'space' in the name makes any sense."

Lumina bobbed her head to each side, her face conveying a slight hint of agreement and still some confusion.

"Whatever. You have to continue with the original plan. Bring the rest of Ground 2, still locked in the alternate reality, back to this reality. And patch the two halves back together again."

Lumina's lips quirked upwards. "On it."
