Chapter Twenty-Nine

"Let's get the hell out of here," Nick said as he grinned at Trubel. She smiled vengefully to herself as she watched Nick take two guns and two knives off of the dead guards. He handed a gun and knife to Trubel and said, "We only shoot if it's necessary. We don't want to draw attention."

"Got it," Trubel said, tucking the gun in the waistband of her pants and clutching the knife in her hand firmly.

"We need to split up and check every room," Nick began.

Trubel looked at him skeptically. Wandering through the compound alone seemed like a recipe for disaster, especially if they were going to be checking every room. Why couldn't they just leave and come back with reinforcements?

Nick understood the question in Trubel's expression. "Adalind or Kelly could be here, and I'm not leaving until I'm sure," Nick explained. His family was his greatest weakness which was why Griese had used it against him. As much as Trubel wanted to make a new, less risky plan, she knew she wouldn't be able to change Nick's mind. She owed him one, anyway, after telling Miles the location of the book.

"I guess we've gotta kill the people that were sent to find the book, too," Trubel said with a shrug. If Griese already sent a task force to find it, the team would still be preparing for the assignment in the compound. They couldn't be allowed to leave.

Nick nodded, tucking his own gun into his waistband. "We have to hurry."

Nick and Trubel both walked out of the room, cautiously glancing from side to side for any threats. There were a few unlucky guards that had just barely reached the door of the room the Grimms had just emerged from; they were dead in seconds.

Outside the room, the hallway split into two sections. The two Grimms looked on curiously until Trubel eventually said, "I'll take the left."

"I'll take the right," Nick offered.

The two Grimms parted ways, and Trubel hoped to herself that she hadn't just said her last words to Nick.

*************

Nick walked quickly down the hallway. At each door, he paused and listened before inevitably throwing it open to kill the occupants. Door one had just been an empty bedroom, probably for one of the workers since it could be locked from the inside. Door two was another bedroom, but this time it was not so empty. Nick felt a little guilty for killing the man in his sleep. Door three concealed lab equipment and a man in a lab coat that decided to off himself with the poison he was working with upon seeing Nick; he knew what was coming for him.

The rest of Nick's search went on like this. His death toll was up to fifteen by door twelve. It was a wonder no one had heard him yet. Of course, he was being careful. It was hard. He needed to focus on fighting, but all he could think about was his son, his fiance, Diana, Trubel, his friends. He needed to keep fighting for them.

He shook his head, trying to shake the distractions from his mind and opened door thirteen. A group of ten Wesen in tactical gear and holding weapons turned to Nick as he entered. The knife wasn't going to do the trick this time; Nick wouldn't be able to stay quiet. He pulled out his gun and shot three Wesen to death before the others even knew what was happening. Nick killed two more by the time the remaining Wesen woged.

The group of Wesen finally realized what was going on, and soon after shots started flying past Nick. There was a table in front of him which he dove toward and flipped over so bullets would bury themselves in its surface instead of his flesh. It worked well, and Nick was able to return fire at a few opportune moments.

There were only three Wesen left by the time Nick's gun ran out of ammunition.

"Crap," he hissed to himself when he heard the distinctive click of "empty."

Once he stopped returning fire, the Wesen approached the table. One Wesen who found himself in Nick's line of sight ended up with the blade of a knife buried in his neck. Nick had gotten really good at throwing knives...

There were only two left now, but Nick was essentially weaponless.

"Any sudden moves and I'll shoot," one of the Wesen ordered, holding her gun on Nick as she stood on his side of the table. She told him to stand up from his crouched position, and he began to comply. He grabbed the back of a chair for support and then used that very chair to launch at the woman as a distraction.

She shot her gun, but the bullet missed Nick. He quickly ran to her and had her disarmed in seconds. He used his newly acquired weapon to kill the woman and the other guard that had also missed when he tried to shoot Nick.

All of them were dead now.

Nick scanned the room to be sure that the threats were eliminated, his eyes spotting a large piece of paper on one of the tables that hadn't been flipped. He walked over to it, examining all of the shapes and lines, and realized that it was a map with a route that led approximately to where the trailer was located. The people that had been sent to steal the Grimm Ancestry book were dead, then. Good.

Nick sighed to himself with relief just before he heard frantic footsteps outside the door. Someone was coming.

Sure enough, the door flew open. Nick raised his gun to shoot and lowered it just as quickly.

"Wu?" he asked as Wu stared back at him with a snarky and smug grin on his face.

"We've come to break you out," Wu announced happily.

Nick's eyebrows furrowed with confusion. "We?"

"Oh, yeah," Wu said dramatically, proud of the large gathering of HW agents that had come together to help the Grimms.

*************

Like Nick, Trubel searched the rooms systematically. Door one was a cell, probably where they kept Nick or Angel.

Angel...

Trubel grimaced and tried not to think about him. She shut the door quickly and continued searching the rooms. Door two was a stockroom for lab equipment; there were no enemies and nothing very useful except maybe the chemicals in bottles, but Trubel wasn't really sure what those did, so she left them there.

Behind door three was a sort of computer lab. There were screens on the walls and at desks, and a few workers sat in front of them, looking invested in whatever research they were doing. They all wore headphones, keeping them oblivious to Trubel's approach. She silently slit the throats of two of them. Only the third and final one had started to swivel his head around to face her before death found him.

Trubel looked at the screen in front of the man she had just killed. The format of the open page reminded her of the database that HW had for Wesen and Black Claw members. Trubel flipped through the pages of the online document quickly and started ot feel sick to her stomach when she found some of the "medical" notes from experiments done on Grimms 1, 2 and three. They were gruesome.

Trubel stopped looking through the database and promised herself she'd be back to that room to destroy everything once she finished raiding her side of the compound. For now, she couldn't make too much noise without putting herself in danger, and taking a baseball bat to the computers would have definitely made some noise.

Door four and six were bedrooms for guards. Trubel killed a guard in each of them. Door five was another empty cell, door seven was Griese's office and door eight was Reichardt's. Door nine was Trubel's room which she left closed, sure that the sight of Angel's body would keep her from moving forward.

Trubel kept working through the rooms, eventually ending up at Lexi's. Trubel eased the door open, finding Miles sitting in the corner next to the bed where Lexi's body was laying. Trubel didn't hesitate and immediately drew her gun, but unfortunately, Miles did the same.

"If one of us shoots, the other does," Miles told her as he pointed his gun in Trubel's direction. "This isn't going to end well for you unless you put the gun down."

"I think getting shot would almost be worth shooting you in the face," Trubel said. Miles laughed at her and she squeezed the trigger.

Click.

Trubel had checked to make sure the gun was loaded! Why wasn't it working?

"Well, that's just bad luck," Miles laughed. "Of all the times for your gun to jam, now is probably the worst."

"So now what?" Trubel yelled, lowering her gun frustratedly. She wanted to avenge Angel, but how could she when she was outgunned. "Aren't you going to shoot me?"

Miles was grinning. "That would just be too easy. Why don't you and I fight like old times?" he suggested. He took the magazine out of the gun he was holding and emptied the chamber before throwing the pieces of the gun onto the ground.

Trubel hadn't won a legitimate fight against Miles before. Hopefully, her luck would change.

*************

Angel was sitting on Trubel's bed with his face buried in his hands. He heard the distant shots that had originally been fired either at or from Nick, and he worried that they were actually directed toward Trubel. He had no way of knowing what was going on, but in his brain, he reasoned that the odds of Trubel being alive after she had given up the location of the book were slim.

Soon, he would be dead, too. Griese would come for him once the others were dead and finally rid herself of his annoyance.

Angel continued to sulk until he heard Trubel yell in the distance. "So now what? Aren't you going to shoot me?"

She was still alive!

Angel jumped to his feet and started pounding on the door as if it would budge. It was Grimm proof and therefore also Fuchsbau proof.

"Trubel!" Angel yelled at the door. He knew he wasn't going to be able to break out. "Crap!" he cursed. He turned away from the door in frustration and froze in shock as he stared at the figure that was standing in front of him. The door hadn't opened, yet Angel was no longer alone. He thought he somehow recognized the small blond child, but he couldn't quite discern from where.

Meanwhile, Diana stood glaring at Angel with angry eyes, mistaking him for an enemy. "Who are you?" she demanded.

"Um, I'm Angel," Angel said uncomfortably. "Who are you?"

"Where are Trubel and Nick?" Diana asked, still looking furious. If Angel didn't start talking, he was a dead man. He had no idea how much danger he was in.

"Why do you want to know?" Angel asked her suspiciously. Who was this girl? Was she good, was she bad? If only he could remember! Angel could only recall feeling uneasy about her in the past, and that was all.

Diana raised a hand in a small, quick movement. That was all it took for her to throw Angel against the wall. He hit the concrete hard and then smacked down onto the ground. Ouch.

Despite the pain, Angel was happy Diana had done that. There was only one person he had heard about that could throw people like that. She was special. Angel remembered that, and he now remembered her.

"You're Diana," Angel choked out. His voice sounded pained.

"Where are Trubel and Nick?" Diana asked again. She sounded more impatient than she had before which wasn't a good sign.

"I don't know," Angel admitted, rising to his feet. He had a little help from Diana who used her powers to pick him up and keep him pressed against the wall. She kept the pressure on him, and it was clear that Angel was having issues breathing; Diana wasn't being gentle.

Angel couldn't die like this! He couldn't die again! No!

"I'm Trubel's friend just like you. I'm telling you the truth," Angel gasped.

Diana stared at Angel skeptically, not sure if she should believe him.

"You can kill me, Diana, but Trubel is in danger right now. Do what you have to do, but please help her," Angel begged Diana.

Angel's desperation was clear. Diana could feel it, and so she let Angel go. Angel fell to the ground choking and Diana said, "I believe you," before walking toward the door that Angel had abused and opening it with a single stare.

She was gone.

"Holy crap," Angel gasped, climbing to his feet. He took a second to reorient himself before sprinting through the open door to begin his search for Trubel.
