Preston Burke- Parents (c)

"Preston, do you have a minute?" You smiled softly to your fiancé, hoping he wasn't about to go into surgery and that he would have enough time to talk to you amidst the hectic life of a surgeon.

"Of course," he said, equally fondly, allowing you to lead him to the near by on call room to have a minimal amount of privacy.

You didn't know how to tell him everything. There was so much to say and a lot of it was stuff that you should have said earlier but you needed to be fully certain before you would be able to tell him. There was more than one piece of life changing news and you didn't want to be telling him before it was a certain concept.

"How did the intern exam go?" He asked.

Maybe it would be easier to tell him than you thought. He had started the dialogue for the conversation, and you would be able to lead on with it easily.

"I didn't take it," you admitted. "I was speaking to the chief instead."

He cocked an eyebrow at you. "Did something happen? Are you retaking it at another time?"

You took his hands in yours, knowing he wouldn't take it easily, but he needed to know the truth as lies weren't a good foundation for a happy relationship.

"I'm leaving the program; the chief is allowing me to stay on for the rest of the month so I can find another job and then I am no longer a surgical intern."

Preston paused, not knowing what he should say to that. You had been a good surgeon, you had great prospects, and he had no idea why you would give that up. You had put so much time, money, effort and sanity into getting through your training so far, there wasn't a logical reason as to why you would abandon it.

"Why?" He asked, the only word he could form in his confusion.

"I'm pregnant, Preston."

If he was confused before, he was completely baffled now.

"What?"

"Both of my parents were surgeons. They said they loved me and wanted the best for me, but they spent far more time at the hospital than they ever did at home. I had nannies and babysitters who were lovely and took care of me, but they weren't my parents. It's not fair to a child to not have anyone. I've always wanted a family and it was a big decision, but I know how much your career means to you and I know you would give the world to be the best father, but it will be okay. With one of us that care do the groundwork of raising a child, the other is able to make the most of the time they get with them," you said softly.

"You're pregnant and you're giving up your surgical career?" He said, clearly trying to organise his thoughts enough to make them clear.

"Yes. I always thought I'd be a better mother than a surgeon anyway," you shrugged.

He took a second more before a joyous smile curled onto his lips. "We're going to be parents?"

You nodded your head, not being able to control the laugh that escaped you due to his seemingly lost state.

Leaning in Preston pressed his lips to yours signifying the start of the new life you would have as parents.
