Addison Montgomery- Hero (c)

You were surprised to come home to find Addison already there. She was a surgeon and worked more hours than the average person, so it was very rare that she was home when she actually said she was going to be. As you entered your home you found Addison sat at the dining table in silence, just staring off into space, lost within her own thoughts. You knew that her job took a toll on her sometimes, but it didn't make you worry any less about her when you found her lost within her thoughts.

"Addy?" You called out, making your way over to be by her side.

She snapped out of her thoughts, offering you a fake smile attempting to seem as though everything was okay. Addison worked primarily with pregnant women and babies so it could be a very sensitive job sometimes due to how fragile unborn or new-born babies could be. She was one of the best in her field but that didn't mean she could save everyone, sometimes there wasn't anything that could be done and a baby or a mother would be lost no matter how hard Addison and her team worked to save them. She tried her best to separate herself from her patients especially if something untoward happened, but she wouldn't be human if none of them affected her.

"What's wrong?" You asked.

"Nothing," she lied.

"Addison, something is wrong," you stated.

She took a second to think of a way to escape the conversation, but she couldn't think of anything to give her that freedom.

"I lost a patient today. I couldn't save the mother and now another baby is without one. The father was in a state as you could imagine but he was glad his daughter could be saved," she sighed. "It's just hard to see another child be brought into this world with a parent who couldn't be saved."

An apologetic smile appeared on your face, wishing you could make it better for her as well as the family of the woman who had passed.

"You did everything you could," you smiled. "You can't be expected to save everyone, sometimes things just can't go the way we want them to."

"But people do expect that. People expect us to be heroes who save everyone, I'm no hero Y/N."

"Not all heroes wear capes Addison," you said softly. "You help so many people who need it, sometimes people cannot be helped but that doesn't take away all the good you do."

She offered you a weak smile. "I just sometimes wish things weren't like that."
