How Far

Riya smirked at Barron. "I knew it!" she muttered. She watched Barron run off and she wanted to follow, but felt compelled to turn away. When she did, she found the specters of Abe and Annie once more. Her small victory faded away and she was filled with the depression she felt every time she thought about or someone mentioned their deaths. Tears fell onto her cheeks and Riya stumbled backwards. She ran to the Priest Hole and up the stairs.

Annie suddenly appeared in front of her. "Don't take your meds!" she ordered, hands out.

Riya let out a shriek, tumbling back.

Annie reached out and took her hand. It felt strange, like when you place your hand on the top of water, not under. "Mała Wizja, I never knew how much that medication suppressed you and I'm sorry."

Riya regained her footing. She yanked her hand from the dead woman's. "You're sorry?" she demanded. "You're dead!"

Annie held her hands together, desperate to rekindle the connection they'd shared in life. "I know. And I'm sorry for that too. And for never telling you about... well, you." She shrugged, hands in her pockets. "I just... Abe wanted Jake to be normal and, if you knew about your peculiarity, he'd need to know about his."

"I don't understand!" Riya yelled. "Other than being a freak and crazy, I've never felt peculiar. I can't be- I'm not-!" Riya insisted.

"You are!" Annie cut her off. She took Riya's hands again and sat them down, explaining everything.

Riya rushed forward the Children's Home. She was in the loop and around the garden when she saw Barron step inside the Home. The brunette pulled a pistol from her purse and set the bag down outside the door. Keeping her heels silent, she stepped up behind the Wight holding her brother hostage.

Miss Peregrine turned to face Barron, snapping, "I thought I told you to be quiet!"

"And I thought I told you you're not giving orders today," Barron reminded, pulling this weapon/appendage closer to Jake's neck.

A gun cocked behind Mr. Barron. "Perhaps, but you sure as fuck aren't either." It was Riya she was sneering behind the beast gone peculiar. "Now, get your lobster claw arm off my brother or these walls will be painted with your brain, however small it may be."

"I can kill him before you can shoot me," Baron promised.

"I imagine it will happen quite at the same time."

"Your brother will be dead."

"So will you. How's that for immortality?" Riya asked.

Barron slowly retreated from the boy's throat.

Riya walked around Barron, her eyes never leaving him. She jerked her head to the side and Jake moved behind Miss Peregrine who seemed only too content to let Riya do whatever she damn pleased.

"Now, that that unpleasantness is out of the way, I'll just be going."

"Oh, no," Riya hissed, shaking her head condescendingly.

"Our deal was he lives, I live."

"There was no deal!" Riya barked in reminder. "But I won't kill you." She let the handle go, the gun suddenly pointing up as her finger remained loop by the trigger.

Barron surged forward, but found himself stuck.

"No, I'll leave that for Victor, Marcie, Annie, Abe, and the countless others."

"What is this?" Baron demanded.

"You see, I finally figured out my Peculiarity." She glanced over her shoulder at Alma, smiling. "I'm the gateway between worlds. I lead to the world of emotion, hence my aura seeing, the world of fate, hence my connection seeing, and the afterworld, hence my mediumship. So, when I'm in the room. Ghosts can step into this world."

"No," Baron realized.

She gave Barron a wicked grin. "Yes. You can't hurt then, but they can hurt you," she sang.

Something lifted Barron by his throat and something else punched his gut. He went to defend his person, but someone else held his arms behind him. Something else kicked him in the crotch and everyone groaned. Barron was lifted higher.

Riya suddenly fell back, hand on her head. Alma caught her and noticed how paler than usual she suddenly looked. She figured these ghosts must be drawing their strength from her. "I think that's quite enough," she said evenly. All the names Riya had listed were once her children so they'd listen to her.

The torment on Barron ceased, though he remained hovering.

"These games with Mr. Barron are taking their toll on Riya. Please complete your game promptly." That last sentence was what she always said when the children under her care needed to wind down their game. She kept her eyes on Riya so she wasn't ordering blindly.

Barron was flung outside, onto the front yard then torn apart. His legs, arms, and head were pulled off in unison.

The game was over and Riya got some - however minute - color back into her immediately. The lethargy passed and she stood up.

Miss Peregrine insisted on helping, of course.

"He dead?" Riya asked tiredly.

"Indeed," Alma confirmed, smiling at the brunette.

The children swarmed them, hugging as they realized they were safe... again... for now.

"Can we stay now?" Claire asked.

"Oh, well..." Alma trailed off. She honestly didn't know.

"Mr. Barron was the only one who found out where the loop was," Riya reminded. "Jake would have seen a Hollow following them."

"There wasn't," Jake inputted.

"I suppose we can. Can you?" Alma asked Riya under the cheers.

Riya glanced over at Miss Avocet. "I think I need to let these ghosts expend their energy on the leftover Wights and Hollows. Regardless of the need to wipe them out, I'll not allow all those Ymbrynes to die. It's time to finish what Abe and Annie started."

Alma looked down. She knew those duties had to come first.

The phone rang, breaking the moment.

"I think Riya should answer that today," Emma proposed.

Alma looked at a confused Riya. She nodded.

Riya frowned in confusion. "Alright..." she consented. She walked into the next room and picked up the ear piece, bringing the output speaker to her mouth. "Hello?" she asked casually.

"Hello. This is Annie. Who is that?" the familiar voice of the other end asked.

Tears flooded Riya's eyes. She covered her mouth. "You... you don't know me yet. My name is Riya."

"Ah! You're new. Well, welcome to the family, Riya. Now I can't talk long, so just tell Miss Peregrine that Abe and I are at the airbase, and we're fine."

"Well, I just wanted to say that, I miss you and, if I ever disappointed you, I'm sorry... and you're the best aunt in the world," her voice broke and Riya had to hang up. She just stood there for a moment, pulling herself back together. She marched from the room and entered the sun room, her heels clicking and her arms swaying naturally.

"Are you alright?" Emma asked.

"What sort of question is that? Of course I'm alright. Now, Jake mentioned you have a boat that you hide in. I need to use it. That's how Miss Avocet and I will return to her loop. The ports in modern day will be closed by the police." Riya turned to Miss Peregrine. "There was a human victim," she explained.

*

Emma used her peculiarity to raise the boat and Olive started the engines.

Alma and Riya pressed their foreheads against each other. "I know the entrance to your loop. I will find you," she promised.

"But will you stay?" Alma asked.

Riya gave her a heartbroken look. "We shall see." And she stepped into the boat, going to the bridge.
