Scarecrow
Kee liked Tim.
He obviously didn't talk a whole lot, but his multitude of books proved he like reading. Not talking a lot was just fine by her anyway.
Damian didn't seem like he liked her very much, but then again, he didn't seem like he liked anyone very much. When she met him, and promptly apologized for borrowing his katanas some weeks ago, he just grunted something intelligible and sauntered off down to the cave.
Jason was fun, he was laid across the couch, limbs flopping over the armrests without a care, watching Man Of Steel, apparently to annoy Bruce.
And then there was Robin, sitting on the armchair next to Jason, cackling at all the inaccuracies of the film.
" Oh man, if only Clark could see this!" Robin cackled.
Jason snorted in agreement, a smirk on his face.
" I do believe Master Kent would not appreciate this depiction of his life," Alfred commented, alerting the boys to his presence.
Their heads shot up, two pairs of eyes widening in surprise.
" Alfie! How do you do that?" Robin whined, obviously startled by their arrival.
Alfred just sighed, and nudged Kee in to the room.
" Hey kid," Jason greeted casually.
Kee waved slightly in his direction.
" Hey Kee! It's so cool you can stay here for a bit! I'll show you around after we come back from the mountain later," Robin offered, a wide grin on his pixie face.
It was strange seeing him without a mask, but she now recognized him as a boy she'd seen in a newspaper while staying with Uncle Clark.
' You're Richard Grayson?' Kee signed, a curious look in her eyes.
Robin chuckled lightly. " That I am," He answered.
The mountain was unchanged, even if her life was. While she liked staying at Wayne Manor, even if she'd only been there for an hour, she still didn't feel like it was home.
Her home had a hole through it that was being fixed. Kryptonians wrestling with villains could do that to retaining walls.
" Hey Kee! Aren't you excited?! Your first mission!" Meghan tittered happily, rushing to her as she exited the zeta tube.
Okay, that threw her, she had had no idea she was going on a mission any time soon. Maybe she was meant to be excited, but for the time being she felt unable to have much emotion at all. If only her dad was here, he would have been delighted for her, also terrified, but delighted none the less.
Kee just nodded, hoping that was an okay reply. She'd better get her uniform on then.
Waving a quick goodbye, she scurried to her unused room, knowing that her spare uniform was there. It made her feel strong, powerful, brave, even when she really was not. The mask fit over her eyes, and she blinked at her reflection, choosing to put up the hood of her flowing cloak to hide most of her face ins shadow. It was a comforting presence.
" Hey Kee, you coming?" Artemis called, knocking on her door.
Kee looked at her reflection one last time, before exiting the room and finding Artemis standing outside, bow in hand.
" You ready for a fight? Cause Robin reckons this mission is a good one," Artemis commented, walking beside her.
' It'll be good to get some experience under my belt ' Kee joked weakly.
Artemis snorted with amusement, and the two of them entered the mission room.
" Team, Activity has been spotted at the Happy Harbor docks, we have received word that the Injustice League may be involved, and with the league searching for a cure, the task falls to you," Batman stated, his gravely voice filling the silent room.
Kee was starting to get nervous, her first mission and it was against the injustice league! Could she get any worse luck?!
She was shook out of her musings when she saw the team entering the bishop. With a small blush, she followed them, and was surprised to find Meghan ushering her in to a seat. She almost freaked when the seatbelt moved on its own accord to strap her in.
" Let us go," Kaldur ordered calmly.
With a small thrill, the bishop flew out of the hangar, and Kee watched with huge eyes as the mountain fell away beneath them and they soared through the clouds.
She missed Kaldur's amused smile at her childlike wonder.
" Approaching the docks, prepare for stealth mode," Meghan informed in her chirpy voice.
Kee pressed the clasp on her cloak, sending it to a pitch black color. She focussed, taking a deep breath and preparing to use the powers. The hum of energy was in her veins.
Come on Kee, this is your moment. You'll make your dad proud, the team proud, your people proud. It's time to prove your worth, and show them just what you can do. You're an Elemental, act like one!
The strangest feeling came over her mind, and she startled for moment.
' Mindlink is established '
Kee realized what it was now, it was what her dad had explained to her was their way of communicating during missions.
' Ummmm, Present?' Kee thought clearly, cautious to see if it'd work.
' Hey Kee, good to hear you again!' Kid Flash complimented.
' Baywatch! That sounded totally insensitive, you can't just say stuff like that,' Artemis reprimanded.
' I-It's okay, he didnt mean anything by it,' Kee murmured through the link, getting used to them being able to hear her thoughts.
' We will be splitting in to groups and searching the docks. Artemis, Kid Flash and Miss Martian will be group 1. Superboy, Elementum and myself will be group 2,' Aqualad ordered as he stood from his seat.
Everyone else stood, and taking her cue from them, Kee followed and waited as the bio ship's doors opened and Superboy leapt out, soaring towards the ground behind the docks.
' May I ask for assistance Elementum?' Kaldur asked hesitantly, looking as though he was trying not to blush.
Kee doubted he needed her help. With his Atlantian strength he could probably drop from this immense height and be just fine upon landing. However, she couldn't argue now, not that she wanted to, this would mean flying with her crush having to hold her hand! Oh goodness she sounded as though she was five....
' Yeah, that's totally fine, just take my hand,' Kee answered, thankful her hood would hide her obvious blushing.
She took his hand, a little shiver going up her spine at the way his strong hand totally dwarfed her own. And with that she stepped off the ship, and yet continued to float at the same level, waiting for Kaldur to step off after her. And when he did, she commanded the air that was supporting her, to support him as well. He smiled at her thankfully, and she started to fly down, enjoying the absolute thrill of the air answering her command, she just knew the North Wind was listening. The two silently flew down and laded beside Kid Flash, who'd held Artemis as he dropped down, vibrating his legs at a speed that when he landed, he just kept running for a while to stop a death bringing impact.
Robin had Grappled down, while Miss Martian was floating down behind them.
' Thank you, Elementum,' Kaldur stated clearly in her mind, and she blushed slightly, thankful once again for her cloak.
And with that, she realized that she still hadn't let go of his hand, and neither had he.
They'd been checking the docks for half an hour, staying to the shadows, and trying to find the villains. The only thing was that they had found no evidence of the injustice league anywhere! There were no signs that anyone had been there in days, which made them even the more suspicious.
' Robin, has your team found anything yet?' Aqualad inquired, his silver eyes narrowed.
' No, we've found exactly nothing. Make's for a suspicious situation if you ask me,' Robin replied, his thoughts seemed to radiate a slight hint of worry.
Something twinkled in the weak sunlight of the late afternoon, and Kee's brown eyes locked on it. Making sure to stay low, she crept out of the shadow of the shipping container they hid behind, to look at it more closely. On the concrete was a small object, glinting slightly at her feet. Crouching down, ignoring the twinge of protest her prosthetic made, she grasped the object and quickly flitted back in to hiding.
She nudged Superboy, and upon his questioning look, handed him the object. He nodded to her and looked down at what was in his palm, before narrowing his blue eyes.
' Aqualad, take a look at this,' Superboy ordered tersely.
Aqualad took the object in his own hands and his mouth turned down in deep frown.
' Where did you find this, Elementum?' He asked.
' Just on the ground over there. What is it?' Kee answered curiously.
' It's a needle, and a used one. There seems to be a slight residue of green liquid within,' Aqualad informed.
Kee grimaced, not liking the sound of that.
' We just found one here too,' Kid Flash piped up over the link.
A slight crackle was heard, and Kee froze, pressed up against the dark of the container. A low whine followed it, as the speakers around the compound were turned on. Aqualad and Superboy opened the empty shipping container, and practically shoved her inside, as they followed and closed the opening behind them in order to hide.
" Greetings to you, baby league. Are you ready to feel the fear?" A scratchy voice asked over the speakers.
Aqualad and Superboy cast each other worried glances, as Kee shivered ins light fear, that voice was seriously scaring her. With a slight hiss, Kee saw a small hole in the wall, and crept over to it, fingers ghosting over the opening.
It was silent now that the voice had gone, and Kee definitely did not expect what happened next. Out of the opening she was inspecting, billowed a greenish cloud of gas that blew straight in to her, sending her stumbling back in to the arms of Aqualad.
' Fear toxin!' Was the last thing she heard on the mind link before darkness took over her vision and her fears began.
