Kee's Uncles

When Kee was discharged from hospital with her crutches and pain medication it was a glorious day.
The doctors had said to give her the prosthetic once she got used to the crutches and the limited mobility. Kee hadn't freaked out yet, and was remaining cheerful through the whole thing but Hal could tell she wasn't completely okay with it.
She'd signed with her sign language the fact that she vaguely remembered seeing Green Lantern at one point an how excited she was that she'd seen her hero. Hal was happy that she seemed to be getting better faster than they expected but on thought still nagged him. He remembered the water shield she'd generated, and how her eyes had glowed blue, but she didn't seem to remember that, either that or the fact that she didn't want to talk about it. Hal couldn't ask her about it, since that would compromise her identity. However, maybe Green Lantern would ask her later? He'd have to, but for now they were home and Kee was excitedly picking up the new comic book he'd gotten her about Green Lantern for a coming home present.
Carol had taught him some basic sign language and he had recognised her thank you for the comic book.
Carol was at work, but she was coming over the next morning. It was the afternoon and Kee was decked out in her superman shirt, with her favourite Flash cap, Arrow socks and Green Lantern shoes. She was happy to be back, and in her super themed clothes after boring hospital clothes. However, everyone was painfully aware of the dangling jean leg where he left leg had been.
Hal and Kee were reading her comic together when the phone from the league had rung.
" Yes," Hal had answered, leaving Kee in the living room.
" Hal, look, I know that Kee is at home today, but Batman seriously need your help at the watchtower identifying an alien threat we haven't come across before," Said Diana's voice through the phone.
" Wonder Woman! What would I do with Kee? Carol can't take her tonight," Hal objected.
" Well........ what about Clark? He's not coming to the watchtower today, or tonight, and Kee met him in hospital. Why don't you ask him to watch her?" Wonder Woman suggested.
" Fine," Hal grunted.

He dialled Clark's number and after a few rings, his best friend picked up the phone.
" Hey Hal, how's your kid? She's home today right?" Clark said brightly.
" She's fine, and at home, but Clark........... the league called, and they need me in the watchtower today and all night probably, can you please watch your ' niece ' for me?" Hal pleaded.
" Of course! I'd love to get to know my ' niece ' more since she now appeals to me as Uncle Clark," Clark laughed.
" You sure you can handle her?" Hal asked worriedly.
" I'm superman, of course I can handle her. Besides, she's not a difficult kid," Clark chuckled.
" Won't she disturb your writing for the daily planet?" Hal inquired.
" She can't talk, can't move around much, and is a great kid from what I've seen, she won't disturb me," Clark said simply.
Hal sighed but relented.
" Thanks for this, I'll drop her off at four," Hal finished.

Kee hadn't protested when he'd told her he had to go to his job. She hadn't been suspicious, merely nodded and sighed that she didn't mind as long as he came and got her soon.
She wasn't sure what to make of being left with Uncle Clark but had let Hal know that she was okay with seeing him, even if she'd only ever met him when she was hyped up on pain medication and on a hospital bed.
She'd hobbled to her room, grabbed her batman bag and her superman pyjamas, and finally some activities to do and has promptly met him at the car, ready to go.
Hal had waited patiently while she figured out the right side of the car and then jumped in beside her. He'd cranked up her favourite radio station and seen her lip sinking silently to her favourite songs that Hal had taken a liking too as well.
They were halfway through Thundertruck, by ACDC, when they reached Metropolis.
Kee had stared with wide eyes at the city around her, it was a beautiful sight, watching her bright eyes staring in awe at the huge buildings.
Hal chuckled at her antics.
" Looking forward to seeing uncle Clark?" Hal asked.
Kee nodded and slipped on her superman sweater as she felt a bit colder with the air conditioner on. When they pulled up outside Clark's apartment complex Kee had stared in surprise at the huge building.
Uncle Clark lives there! She'd signed awkwardly around her crutches, gazing upwards.
" Yeah, he sure does kiddo," Hal had laughed.
Kee had grinned excitedly at the thought of being up high and when they entered the building had stopped in despair. Stairs. Her worst enemy. Stairs.
The elevator wasn't working and had an out of commission sign on the front.
Hal had had to drop her off in the lobby and hasn't noted the stairs. She'd hugged him tightly as he held her crutches for her while she hugged.
Off balance, he'd held her shoulder tight while she'd got her crutches back under her again and she'd flashed a smile, but there was anger at her uselessness in her eyes.
Hal had waved goodbye as he drove to the corner, where he could Zeta beam up to the watchtower.

That was when Kee had to tackle the stairs.

One painful movement after another she'd gotten halfway up the stairs, she had been moving so slowly! Finally when she was near Clark's floor the dreaded had happened, she'd slipped. Crashing to the polished marble steps she'd slipped backwards and only just managed to awkwardly land on her hands and knee. She'd made a strange hissing groan of pain and surprised herself with the ability to make that sound. Picking up her crutches she somehow managed to get back up and start hobbling up the stairs again. She was right near Clark's floor when she heard footsteps coming hurriedly her way from above. She'd attempted to move to the side and as the footsteps drew nearer she'd slipped again! She'd crashed towards the stairs and prepared herself for a painful landing when strong arms had caught her mid fall.
Looking up with surprise evident in her light brown eyes she saw Clark holding her steady, his funny glasses forward on his nose.
" You right kiddo? I'm so sorry that I forgot the elevator wasn't working, I didn't know you'd try the stairs without Hal!" Clark fretted as he maneb stood help her stand and get her fallen crutches for her.
Knowing he understood sign language she'd answered him.
Hal didn't know about the stairs, he had to leave me in the lobby because work needed him urgently. I do not mind the stairs at all, I thought I could do it Kee had signed.
Clark grimaced at her answer.
" It's twenty one floors up! You can't be expected to make it that far!" Clark fretted yet again in his stuttering voice.
I can do it, I just wasn't watching where I was going and the marble was slippery Kee said boldly.
Clark ruffled her hair affectionately, making her cap twist to the side.
She let out her weird rasping, choking sounding laugh and hugged him in greeting.
" Come on, let's go up and get your stuff put away," Clark said with a smile.
He'd moved slowly as Kee slowly made her way step by step. When she slipped a third time, Clark had caught her again, however this time, he'd swept her up in his strong arms and held her bridal style. He'd grabbed her crutches in his hand as she clung to his shirt, emitting her strange laugh in glee as he spun her around for fun.
When he put her down on the couch and placed her crutches next to her she'd grinned brightly at him and gave him a thank you hug.
Clark was a goner.
That grin had tipped him over the edge, she was officially his favourite kid. And the fact that she was wearing a superman shirt and a superman jacket just tugged at his heart strings. He sat next to her as he typed up a story for the paper about Superman, and she drew a picture. The angle the blank drawing book was at stopped Clark from seeing it and he wasn't going to use his X-ray vision if she didn't want him to know what the drawing was of.
He finished the story, just as he felt a tug on his sleeve.
Looking over he saw Kee staring at him hopefully. She was holding out the book she'd been drawing in.
He took it and instantly his eyes widened in surprise.
It is you, uncle Clark, I drew you Kee signed.
Clark grinned at her. The picture she'd drawn was absolutely amazing! He couldn't draw this good! It looked just like a black and white photo of himself!
" It's amazing Kee! I didn't know you could draw," Clark gushed.
Kee smiled at him sheepishly, cheeks red with embarrassment.
I wanted to draw a picture of my favourite uncle! That way you will be with me when I have to go home Kee signed in embarrassment.
Clark gave her a tight hug and she laughed as he tickled her slightly.
" I love it Kee Bee, thanks!" Clark chuckled fondly, creating a new nickname for her.
She giggles at his nick name and hugs him again.
Clark looked though the book and he couldn't help but be shocked by the amazing drawings she had. The entire book was so far, filled with drawings of different justice league members, except for a drawing of Carol, and a drawing of Hal, and then of course, Clark. Clark paused at the drawing of Superman that Kee had drawn.
" Kee Bee, could I take a photo of this picture?" Clark asked curiously.
Kee stared at him in confusion but shrugged in answer.
Clark smiled and took a picture of the amazing drawing. Then, when he edited his article, he filled the photo slot for the article with the picture drawn of superman.
Kee didn't know, and instead, was now holding a Superman comic in her hands.
Uncle Clark, will you read to me? She asked hopefully, holding out the comic.
Clark grinned as he took it, and when he read, he read with actions and expression, remembering the battle he was reading about as if it was yesterday! Kee sat there in awe, clapping when Superman was winning the fight and watching in awe as Clark described the mystery.

After dinner, Kee had gotten in to her Superman pyjamas, much to Clark's amusement, and hobbled back to the couch where she and Clark had continued the story. She had snuggled up against him, sitting on his lap as he read. However, when he reached the end of the story, she was fast asleep on his lap. He smiled at her innocence and wondered how a loving kid like this could come from Hal Jordan!
He'd slowly and carefully laid her down on the couch and was about to walk to his desk to keep typing when she'd stirred, trying to form words in her sleep. She hadn't succeeded though and had ended up making small rasping noises in her throat. Clark had picked her up again and held her in her arms. The felt was instant, and she slept on peacefully. With a smile Clark sat at his desk, Kee, wrapped in a blanket, sleeping on his lap as he typed.

At six in the morning Hal turned up, worried about his girl being away from him for so long. Knocking on Clark's door he'd been greeted by a very amused Clark who had a sleeping Kee in his arms.
" She's out like a light," Clark whispered when Hal came inside.
Hal gently shook Kee's shoulder and she blearily opened her eyes, still in Clark's arms.
Daddy? She sighed as she woke up to see Hal.
" Hey there darling, time to go home now," Hal said soothingly.
Kee yawned as Clark handed Kee over to her father who then held her in his embrace while Clark found her crutches.
Thank you uncle Clark! I had a great time, will I see you again soon Kee signed hopefully.
" Of course I will see you soon Kee Bee, try and keep me away," Clark chuckled as he ruffled her bed hair.
Kee grinned and hugged him before taking her crutches and hobbling out of the room, with Hal staying by her side to help her down the stairs.
