Chapter 8: The old man

I dedicate this chapter to kingAdesuwa

Hussain sat on the one sitter to my left, every time he opens his mouth to say something he will close it again. Amin is busy chewing at his nails which is something he does when he is confused, while Yusuf had his head in his hands obviously thinking of what to do next.

Fati paced back and forth in the Marafa's sitting room, "I don't believe her she is a psycho who is trying to scare us, trying to make us believe she has some power or something but to me she is a deranged criminal who deserves to be in jail."

Hearing Fati's words I raised my head only to find the guys staring back at me. Fati has a point and I believe what she said to some extent but I am afraid of her threats.

"Fati is right, I also believe she is bluffing let call your dad and get her arrested." Amin said getting on his feet.

"I like the whole idea of getting her arrested, but have you thought of the fact that you might be putting our lives in more danger than it already is, but most of all you will be putting their dads life in danger." Yusuf said pointing at both me and Fati.

"We don't even know who she is." Hussain added.

Yusuf words gave my fears more credence and I was beginning to feel my dad should not be call.

"Do you have any better idea," Fati scowl.

"Look I am not saying its a bad idea." Yusuf sighed " I just want you to understand that if your dad calls the police, it will only start a long investigation. What if she attacks your father during the investigation? What if she attacks any of us or our family?"

Fati slump on the remaining one sitter close to her, she is as smart as Yusuf if not more so am sure she understand his points. The room fell into another long and tense silence until my phone rings, all of our eyes shot towards the phone which I forgot on the glass center table after the last call.

We all moved closer and when we saw the caller ID we all release the breaths we never realized we were holding, on the screen was the word mom.

"Hello mummy." I said picking the call. "Good morning."

"Abubakar, Abubakar." My mom called my name, "is your sister there?"

"Yes ma, she is with me we are on our way back home."

"Good I am waiting for you both." Mom said ending the call.

"Time to go home guys." I said getting on my feet.

We all went back to Amin's room and get our things while he got the car keys. The ride to my home which was closest was quiet and uneventful, ten minutes later the car stopped in front of my house.

"Let's discuss this on Monday at school." I said. Me and Fati got out of the car and watched as they drive off.

"Are you ready." Fati asked.

"I can never be ready for her scolding." I frown.

"Good luck." Fati said a huge grin forming at the corner of her lips.

I face palm before bracing myself and walking towards the front door.

"Salamualaikum." I said walking through the front door.

Today is weekend and as expected I find my dad immediately I walked into the sitting room on a couch watching TVC news, the news paper review to be precise. I am kind of scared of my father, he hardly lay a hand on us but the few times he did were some of the most painful memories in my life. He hasn't lay a hand on me for over three years now which is a huge source of comfort.

"Good morning daddy," Fati greeted. He nodded at her and without wasting a single more second she skipped to the kitchen.

I couldn't help the feeling that Fati is happy I will be getting scold so badly I probably won't be able to sleep.

                           ‡‡‡

As I hoped my dad didn't say much but my mom, gods she scold the hell out of me. She complained of almost everything, about how rough and dirty my room is, how I don't do anything except chat, play football, listen to music and as you know Nigerian mothers she exaggerated everything she said. She almost got my phone seized but surprisingly Fati interfered and begged on my behalf.

Thank god she did know I sing if not my dad would have heard of it and I will be done for

I sigh lying on my bed. My phone buzzed and when I checked it was a message from Maryam, asking me why I ditched her at the party, "like say na me carry her come." I hiss throwing the phone back on the bed. My patience is far running out I am able to put up with her selfish behavior less and less, I was missing and probably would have died but here she was complaining that I ditched her.

My door suddenly swings open. I raise my head slightly giving Fati a questioning look. "Someone is here to see you," Fati said before rushing back out. I wanted to ask who but she didn't give me the chance, just when I was about to get up her head pop back in, "and your room looks clean." Fati smirked. I throw a pillow at her but she was already gone and it slammed into the closed wooden door.

I groan standing up and making my way to the sitting room. When I got there I found no one, my mom should be in her room and checking the time it was already 4pm my dad should still be I in the mosque. "I can't believe Fati didn't invite my guest in."

Opening the front door I saw someone I wasn't expecting to see standing before me. It was a girl with delicate face, big chocolate brown eyes and slightly thin lips decorated by a lip gloss, her petite body was dressed in a knee length armless black gown which was tight at the waist but spread out down to her knee. It was non other than Sarah.

"Hi" Sarah said awkwardly.

"H-hi" I stuttered.

"I was coming back from the church and I decided to come check on you." She said dropping her head.

"Oh! why?" The words slipped my tongue, but I didn't regret saying it. Remembering what happened between us or what she did to us to be precise I couldn't stop the frown that formed on my face.

Seeing the frown on my face an expression I can't quite recognize appeared on her face for a second before it disappeared. "I heard you went missing during the party so I wanted to come see if you are fine, but as I can see you are doing well so I will get going." Sarah turn walking away.

Looking at her departing figure my heart softened, "wait." I whispered but it came out louder than I thought and she stopped. "I can walk you to the main road and help you get a bike if you wish." I said with a half smile. I guess she still hold a large part of my hear, now we are not lovers and also not friends I don't even know what to call us. Why did you do that to us.

She turned and smile nodding her head. From my house to the main road is quite a bit of a walk and bikes hardly comes around unless maybe they where here to drop someone, we walk in awkward silence before she finally broke the tense atmosphere.

"Haven't heard a new song from you guys in a while." Sarah smile.

"Yeah we are currently working on a new track which will be out soon."

"Oh! Can you sing the chorus." Sarah said her voice laced with excitement, but when our eyes meet she immediately looked away, "you don't have to if you don't feel like singing."

Her words made memories which I have been trying to bury surface, I remembered back when we are still together she has always been the inspiration behind every chorus I have written whether it finally made it to the studio or not and I will always sing them to her before I even show them to my friends.

I sing the chorus to her while she nods her head slowly. "I love it." She said when I finished, I smiled but said nothing.

After six minutes we were finally at the main road, and I stop a bike for her. "So see you at school tomorrow." Sarah said.

I nod and wave her goodbye as the bike man steps on the gear and turn the throttle zooming off. I turn and started my short walk back home, I was deep in my thought about Sarah when I mistakingly bumped into an old man. He was wearing a white but slightly dirty kaftan, his hair was all gray and had his hands behind his back.

"Watch were you go kid." The old man said angrily. Surprisingly he was very fluent in English, without hearing him speak I would have taken him for an illiterate.

"I am sorry sir." I apologize and was about to walk away when he held my hand.

"Wait." He said. A long silence follow as he stared at my eyes while I also stared at his. "Interesting," The old man finally broke the silence with a chuckle.

"What is your name." He ask.

"Abubakar."

"Hmm Abubakar." He repeated.

"My name is Musa, Musa Gado but you can call me baba." The old man introduced.

"Okay baba but I am in a hurry I have to get home soon." I said worried if I stay out for too long it might be a problem after all I am kind of like grounded even though my dad didn't say it, I was still able to tell because I wasn't even send to buy anything since yesterday.

"No problem, no problem I am sure we will be seeing each very soon." Baba smile.

"Bye sir." I said walking away.
