Chapter 4: Party
I was finally ready and decided to check my self out one last time in front of the mirror. I was putting on a black swag jeans, black T-shirt with a white unbuttoned short sleeve shirt on top, and white boots. My natural dreadlocks which is a source of jealousy to every student in GHC was styled into a low bun.
Staring at my reflection in the mirror I notice my slightly swelling eyes from an obvious lack of proper nights sleep, since I knew my little imagination was an imagination no more I haven't been able to sleep peacefully, I keep having this feeling that some thing bad is going to happen tonight.
'Luckily it isn't that prominent'
I walk away from the mirror and lay on the bed waiting for Yusuf and Amin, they will come pick me up in one of Amin dad's car. His dad is generally acknowledged as the richest man in Green hill, but he still wouldn't get him a car. He thinks Amin is too young to own a car.
My room was unusually clean today after my mom helped me clean up, for the first time this week neither my dirty clothes nor my guitar was on the bed at this time of the day. Thinking about time I check my phone and realise it was already 7:50pm ten minutes more before its time for my party, 'African time.'
The party was able to push through thanks to Amin who am sure lied to his father to get the balance needed.
I heard the familiar horn of the Marafa's range rover and I knew they were here, without a single more second I rushed out of the house to meet up with them at the gates.
I saw them both leaning on the car waiting for me, Amin's hair was in his usual full punk style, he was on all white, shorts, shirt, socks and, boots all white. Yusuf was also all white except he wasn't wearing shorts and on his dark hair was his trademark round cut hair style.
"You guys are late," I said.
"you don't expect us to be the first at the party do?" Yusuf asked.
I shrugged my shoulders before walking to the front passenger seat, "guys I keep having this feelings that something bad is going to happen tonight," I said getting into the car.
"What do you mean?" The guys were now staring at me.
"I can't explain the feeling, but I am definitely sure something bad would happen tonight." I try to not show just how panicked I am.
"At your party?" Yusuf asked.
"I don't know," I sigh.
"Come on guys, nothing bad will happen trust me," Amin flashed his confident smile.
"Except maybe a few drunken teenagers," Amin joked.
"You are thinking too much," Yusuf added.
'I hope so,' I prayed silently.
We arrived thirty minutes late to the venue, Burner boys 'on the low' was blaring through the five feet tall speakers. We walked into the hall to a rousing applause, the Dj changed the music to a birthday song as everyone sing along.
Happy birthday to you,
How old are you now,
Happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to you.
After the birthday song was over I took the mic from the MC.
" I am not going to give some boring speech," I chuckle, "Thank you all for coming to celebrate this wonderful day with me I hope you all have fun, guys please try not to get any girl pregnant," I joked passing the mic back to the Mc.
Almost every senior class students of Green hill college was here, the whole football team and a few strangers I have never seen before. After almost thirty minutes of hand shaking, shouting, dancing and, putting up fake smiles I decided to go get a bottle of water to calm my burning throat.
I got myself a bottle of water and walked out of the hall for some fresh air. The nagging feeling was getting stronger as the sky turned darker making me extremely uncomfortable and worried. What if someone went missing? What if someone die? What am I going to tell my dad? That I hosted a party he didn't know about and also lied about Amin taking us out for a ride to celebrate my birthday.
So many thought run through my mind I can feel myself developing a head ache. I took a few deep breaths to calm my madly beating heart and poured the water remaining in the bottle over my head.
"Hi," I heard a familiar voice behind me.
I turned around and saw my ex Sarah who am pretty much still in love with.
"Hi," I reply awkwardly.
Sarah was my girlfriend, the whole school knew of our relationship but five months ago I walked into school and just like every other day our group of three just like the moon amidst thousand of stars were surrounded by other students. That was when it came, a letter written by her. In the letter she wrote how she was tired of our relationship, that she had been putting up with me all this while but couldn't continue anymore.
Remembering the words written by her familiar handwriting I couldn't help but feel my heart turn cold.
"Happy birthday," Sarah congratulated with a smile.
"Thanks," I replied.
She wanted to say something but decided against it, instead turning around and heading back to the party hall, looking at her departing figure I couldn't help but sigh at what we have become, strangers.
"What was she looking for," I hear Maryam ask pulling me back to my senses.
"Nothing," I smiled "she just wished me a happy birthday."
Maryam is my current girl friend. I didn't want to look weak after Sarah dumped me so I hooked up with Maryam the next day and we have been together ever since.
"Come let's go back to the party," I warp my hand around Maryam's waist.
We were on our way back to the party hall when I heard curses coming from within the hall then sound of broken table, I knew something is not okay. I rushed into the hall and found Yusuf and Amin fighting two members of the bombers squad while two others stood watching.
'Bastards,' I cursed under my breath.
I wasn't sure how they sneaked into the hall but I don't give a damn. Without alerting them of my arrival I kick the one to my left on the waist making him fall face first to the floor. The second person happened to be there leader Samir, looking unsurprised at my arrival rush at me with a punch to the face which I dodged. Yusuf as usual was the first to knock his man out, grabbing a bottle champagne he charged over aiming to smash the bottle on the head of Amin's opponent, luckily I also knocked Samir out and was able to intercept him stopping a tragedy from happening.
After we got them out of the hall I breath a sigh of relief, this must have been what my consciousness was warning my about.
I was on my way back to the hall when I heard whispers of my name
"Abubakar, Abubakar," the voice called.
I turn around but couldn't find anyone, 'maybe I didn't hear right," I shrugged.
Just when I turned back I was hit by dizziness, it was so strong I almost fell. My eyes were clouded I couldn't see anything and I could hear my name being called more clearly.
I was about to shout when I lost my consciousness.
