Fifty five

Luin smoothed down his silver robes nervously. They were gorgeous. A shining silver of starlight decorated in swirling patterns of blue and green that raced up his arms and down over his shoulders. The outer robe trailed on the floor behind him, hanging over over his chest to expose the lighter robe on the inside of his customary deep blue but tinged with silver and green in matching patterns. For once, his jade swords did not hang at his waist and there was no staff in his hand, no guqin on his back. Instead his flowing sleeves hung empty of all apart from a few talismans and all that hung from the ornate belt was a jade pendant that matched the drops of green in his ears and the Jewel hanging from his neck. A partner to the one on the other side of the palace, it's energy dancing on his senses.

He rested a hand to it and smiled. His hair hung over his back, down his back and braided with white blossoms of spring and blue flowers from gardens as it brushed his shoulder blades. It was not as long as it once was but it was long enough for the marriage braids to intertwine around his head. The circlet of silver Thranduil had given him for Aragorn's coronation a year before was nestled over the top, resting on his forehead. It glinted in the spring light as he peered at himself nervously in the vanity mirror again. Charcoal had been used to add a darkness on the edge of his eyes, outlining their shape and a stain created from berry juice added a red to his eyelids. The red reminded him of his mother and he was sad that she could not see him. He hoped that she was happy for him.

The door opened and he turned. Gandalf entered, his white robes spotless as he closed the door behind him. When he saw him, the old man smiled and there was a nostalgic happiness in his eyes. "Luin", he smiled. "You look beautiful. You have come along way from the boy I found on that beach".

Luin beamed at his adoptive father. "Thank you. I must admit that I never expected my life to turn out this way. I just mourn the fact that my parents and Legolas' mother cannot see us now. I wonder if they would be proud".

"I am sure that wherever they maybe, they are proud. I am proud of you. You have found happiness young one". Gandalf reached out and took Luin's hands in his, squeezing them reassuringly. "Your elf prince is good. He will do good by you".

"And I will do good by him", Luin smiled. "When I first dreamed of him, I knew our paths would be intertwined. Now I cannot imagine any different. I am getting Married Gandalf". The last sentence was spoken with such joy and wonder that it made the old man smile. The wide eyes reminding him of the boy he had saved all those years ago. Outside there was a knock on the door.

"I believe it is time", Gandalf stated. He held out and arm and the shorter man rested his hand on it. "May I escort you to your husband to be?" Luin laughed and nodded.

They left the room together and made their way through the palace and out down through the elven city. The streets were empty as they passed. Everyone out in the lands round the river to see their prince get married. Luin could feel a slight flutter of nerves in his stomach as he grew closer. Not misgivings or regrets or uncertainty, just slight apprehension of the crowds. The king of Dale, Bard's grandson, and Bain would be attending. The teen boy who had helped his father kill a dragon now a old man in his seventies. Dwarves from Erebor would be there. The king under the mountain and his consort along with their two children would be attending. Kill and Tauriel with their daughter Nali and their son, Fili. Aragorn and Arwen, Eowyn and Faramir, Sam and his partner Rosie. All three couples newly weds and Luin had attended each wedding. And now they were here to see his.

They turned the corner to the gates to the back of Greenwood lands and Luin lost his breath. Legolas was waiting there for him. His back was turned and he was talking to a familiar red haired she elf. Tamriel was dressed in elvish greens but a dwarf necklace hung around her neck and a hand cloak in similar style hung down to her waist. Her hair was in dwarf braids and they jingled with bells as she tiled her head to look over at Luin. A smile lit up her face and she winked at him before saying something to Legolas and darting out through the gates. "I shall go and find my seat", Gandalf excused himself but Luin hardly noticed.

Legolas turned and he was beautiful. His hair was braided in matching plaits and the same blue flowers and white blossoms were tucked in with the strands. The silver circlet rested on his brow and robes cut in an elvish style hung over his frame. They highlighted his shoulders and hung around his ankles, shorter than Luin's robes. Blue and green decorated the silver and the inner tunic was a pale green in a mirror of Luin's colours. Even Legolas' eyes were highlighted with slight green and his silver jewel earrings hung from his ears. The elf seemed to glow with a pale white light that never failed to remind Luin of his endearment for the other.

"Nin Ithil", Luin stepped forwards, the words a whisper. "You're gorgeous".

Legolas smiled, whole face full of joy. "I only pale compared to you. Melethril, you are more than I could ever dream". He reached out his hands, palm up in an offering. Luin didn't even hesitate before placing his own hands in their hold. He smiled at his lover, his fiancé and soon to be husband.

Outside, music had started. Luin glanced out through the gates and tightened his grip on Legolas' hand. "They are awaiting us. Let's go and get married".

"I am eager to call you my husband", the blonde smiled back. Together, they stepped out into the spring day.

The path from the gates was simple stone but someone had littered it in white and pink blossom. The elves of the city cheered as they passed through the crowds. The women and children throwing handfuls of blue flowers that landed on their shoulders and hair, making Luin laugh as they passed through. Beyond the crowds of the citizens were the seated rows. Thranduil was visible at the end of the path on the edge of the river. The water flowing behind him and the shadow of Erebor in the distance. The king was stood on a a stone pedestal that he'd had made for the occasion, commissioned from the dwarves in a sign of friendship. It lifted him two steps above the crowds so that they could all see him. Before the pedestal sat their friends. The fellowship on the front rows with the surviving dwarves from the company behind them. Men from Rohan and men from Dale filled the last few seats, all watching as Legolas and Luin walked arm in arm.

Thranduil smiled, the expression surprisingly warm and a far cry from the distant king Luin had first met. He wore muted robes today, deep golds that did not outshine the silver of the couple. His crown of branches and forest leaves sat high on his head. Luin glanced over the guests as he walked passed. Sam and Frodo both smiled at him, Sam with an arm around his wife. Merry and Pippin both waved enthusiastically as he passed and he wriggled his fingers back. Then he wriggled his fingers at Kill, the dwarf older and looking more like Thorin, waved back. His infant son on his lap. The baby dwarf with strawberry blonde hair to match his sister, who was gaping and waving from her mother's lap. Gimli was seated with his parents and the rest of the surviving company. A few of which were crying. Luin tried not to laugh as Nori took off his hat and blew his nose. (Over sixty years later and he still had that hat). Ori was almost sobbing. Aragorn and Arwen both nodded at them as they passed. Arwen blowing Luin a kiss, her smile sisterly and proud.

Then they reached the platform and ascended the stairs. Thranduil inclined his head as Luin and Legolas held out their joined hands. The king held out a silken rope of blue and green. "I welcome you all to the Greenwood to celebrate the marriage of my son, Prince Legolas, to the blue wizard, Luin", His voice echoed over the clearing. Luin and Legolas smiled as the king held up the rope and began wrapping it around their joined arms. "In the joining of hands and the fashion of a knot, so are your lives now bound, one to another. May this knot remain tied for as long as love shall last. May this cord draw your hands together in love, never to be used in anger. May the vows you have spoken never grow bitter in your mouths". The elvish vows fell over them as the silken rope was knotted. Their hands bound together.

Thranduil stepped back once he was done. "You may say your vows, if you have any to say".

Luin took a breath and smiled softly at the elf facing him. "Legolas", he spoke in the tongue of man. "There is not much that needs to be said between us that has not already been said. Every promise I have made to you, I have held and you have done the same. You are the one person I wish to see when I wake up and the one person I wish to see when I fall asleep. I trust you on the battlefield and I trust you in the calm times. I may not be from this world and I may have lived here for a long time but you are what truly makes this world my home. You are the one who I can endlessly rely and the one who gives me a sense of belonging. I love you and I am blessed to be your husband".

Legolas was smiling softly as Luin talked, blue eyes so fond as he listened to the words. His hand was warm under the rope and he held up his other one for Luin to take. When the words ended, he opened his mouth and paused for a second. "Luin", he said at last, his words coming in elvish. "My guiding light. Your chosen name has always been fitting for you are a guiding light to those around you. When I first began to dream of you, I was confused. I thought they were nothing more than dreams and then I met you. You were real, and everything changed. You encouraged me out into the world and opened my eyes. You have saved my life, as I have saved yours and after everything, I am proud to be your Melethril. And it is my honour to be your husband. I will never leave you and one day I vow that I will build you a boat that will take you wherever you wish. For as long as I love you".

"You may now seal the vows", Thranduil announced, spreading his hands.

Luin let out a high giggled as he reached out to clasp the back of Legolas' neck with his free hand. The blonde elf gripped his waist and leaned into the touch with a wide smile. The kiss that they shared was messy and uncoordinated because they just could not stop smiling. Cheers went up and more flowers were thrown. Luin rested his forehead against Legolas' and laughed as he felt them bounce off his shoulders. "Husband", he whispered.

"Husband", the word was echoed back and they met in another kiss. This one deeper, gentle and a greeting. It was a new hello, a welcome and an 'I love you'.  It was all they needed to say and more.
