9: Gray Always Wins

Ryder's POV

Evidently, the plane was more suited for work purposes than leisure, but either way, I was very happy. Blake obviously disappeared to fly the plane, and another man joined, to co-pilot. It appeared that he had flown the plane back into the air strip prior to us getting on it.

"Hi, you must be Ryder," he said, offering me a hand. "I'm Hayes. Hayes Johnson."

"Hi, nice to meet you Hayes," I said, shaking his hand.

"Right back at ya," he said, before going to the cockpit with Blake.

I sat at the window, Sam on my right, Gray, Sierra and Josy sat in the row in front of us, facing us.

Sam put music on for us as we took off, Byron Langley.

Roman gave me a rundown of the stops and scheduled flight times.

We had a flight from London, England to Muscat, Oman, which was just over 7 hours.
Then from Muscat, Oman to Jakarta, Indonesia just over 8 hours.
Then from Jakarta, Indonesia to Sydney, Australia just over 7 hours.
Then one last flight from Sydney, Australia to Hamilton, New Zealand, just over 3 hours.

Three stops along the way was necessary, as this type of aircraft would need refuelling multiple times.

It was a long journey, but lucky for me, I loved planes.

"Do you like plane journeys?" I asked Sam.

He shrugged. "I don't mind them. Sometimes it's annoying for my sleep schedule and stuff, but it's fun. I won't even ask you, I know you do," he said, knowingly.

"Ha, yeah, I love them, hail, rain, or sunshine," I said, contently looking out the window.

A couple of hours into the flight, Jared sat down beside Sam. "The others are asleep, let's play something," He placed 2 decks of cards on the table. Gray took off his headphones and so did me and Sam.

"I used to collect card decks," I said.

"I still do," Jared said. "I have lots back home, I'll show you some day," he did a few skilful shuffles, mixed the two decks and dealt out 14 cards to us each. "You know how to play right?"

"A to K. Is it one shape?" I said.

Jared shook his head. "Just same colour,"

I put my cards into order, turning at a slight angle away from Sam. "No cheating," I said, and he held his hands up in defence, jokingly.

I had started off with a nice set. I decided to go for black, since I had more of them. I had 4 black 4s, which I decided to keep hold of, so that people that were also going for black wouldn't be able to win until I was close.

From watching everyone else playing, I figured that Sierra, Josy and Sam were going red. Jared appeared to be aiming for black, like me, but Gray was confusing. He picked up both red cards and black cards. He either had no idea what he was doing, or he was playing an incredibly strategic game, and considering Sam told me he was very smart, I assumed of the latter.

After a couple of orbits, I only needed two more cards, which meant I was going to have to drop two of the black 4s. Sam, who played before me, placed down a black 7. I clenched my jaw. I wanted to pick up the card, but I'd have to put down a 4, which might be something that Gray needed. Reluctantly, I picked up the 7, and placed one of the 4s. Gray looked at me briefly. "You use tactics, don't you?" he said, before picking up the 4. He then slapped down two cards, both red, and spread the remaining 13 cards, revealing A to K in black.

I shrugged, placing my set down. "I don't know, I just decided to keep hold of them for some time," I said, referring to the 4s.

"Gray always wins," Sam whined.

"Lets play again later," Jared said, packing them up and moving back to his original seat. Josy went with him.

I leaned to Sam a little bit. "Are they like a thing or something?"

"Not really, they like each other, but neither of them will say it," Sam said. "Wanna get something to eat?"

I nodded and followed him to the back of the plane where there was a mini fridge and a few cupboards. We had about 3 hours of flight time remaining.

He opened the mini fridge. "So . . . for the beverages," he said, in a posh accent, "We have, iced coffee, mango juice, apple juice, lemon juice, tomato juice, or water. Or we can make coffee or tea,"

"I don't really like hot drinks. Can I have some lemon juice please, kind Sir?" I spoke, playing along with his banter.

"Neither do I. And yes Lady Ryder, you can indeed," he grinned as he passed me a lemon juice bottle. He took the same thing out for himself. "And for the snacks," he opened a cupboard. "We have Minstrels, Smarties, Chocolate Buttons, M n Ms, or Tangfastics- Or we could just take one of each and share them,"

I gave him an approving nod to the last option and he carried them back to our seats.

"Don't make yourselves sick kids," Gray said.

"Probably learning from you," Sierra chuckled.

The four of us sat and ate our sweets, and talked. Sam had turned on his speaker and some quiet music was playing from it.

Jared and Josy joined us for a few more games, which Gray won, and then Gray and Sierra decided to get some sleep in the last hour before we reached Oman.
