3: Nothing Left For Me Here
Ryder's POV
They smiled at me. "You made the right decision," The blonde guy said.
The woman pulled me in for a hug. "I'm so glad you're joining us," she said. "I'm Sierra, that's Blake," she pointed to the blonde guy, "That's Texas, but we call him Tex," the guy with the sword on his back, "and that's Roman," the guy with the long hair.
"We should go now, before anybody really notices us," Blake said, glancing across the car park.
Texas and Roman went into one Land Rover, then Blake and Sierra helped me into the other one. They let me sit in the front, which made me smile, because I had never been in a Land Rover before, even though they were my favourite. Sierra sat in the back, and Blake drove.
I got in the car after taking one glance back at the store, and leaving my old life behind.
As we drove, they spoke to me. There seemed to be some kind of communications thing that allowed them to speak to the other car without having a phone out. On the dashboard there was a phone number of a rental company, so I guessed that they had hired the cars.
"We'll explain everything to you when we get to where we're staying," Blake said.
I nodded and gulped.
Once we reached they're place, they parked their cars and took me to the upstairs of a small bakery. The baker opened a hidden door and let us in. In the room, there was 6 people.
A man with tattoo sleeves and no hair spoke first. One of his arms didn't look real. "You didn't tell us you were bringing someone back."
Sierra shrugged and put an arm around my shoulder. "We thought she would make a good addition. Plus, she was willing. This is Ryder Lyndley. Everyone, introduce yourselves."
A man with brown hair that had grey streaks in it gave me a small wave. In his hand he had a rubix cube, which he had solved as I walked into the room. "Hi, I'm Gray,"
"I'm Jared," The man had short bleached hair and he was sharpening a knife.
"Hey I'm Samuel," This guy was younger. In fact he seemed the same age as me, maybe a year or two older. He looked a little bit like Blake, and I thought he was kinda good looking. His hair was dirty blonde and naturally slightly wavy, but he had short back and sides: the kind of hair cut that the popular boys had in my school.
"I'm Josephine," This woman had dark brown hair with red highlights. I thought she was very pretty. There was an axe on the bed beside her, and she smiled at me. She looked the same age as Sierra.
"Hi sweetie, I'm Taylor," This guy seemed younger than the others, but older than Samuel. He had tanned skin and black hair, and he looked charming.
Reluctantly, the tattoo man spoke. "I'm Reeve. Don't get too close." he said, before looking back at some kind of blue print.
Sierra squeezed my shoulder. "Don't worry about him, he takes a while to warm up to people,"
I nodded. "So uh, What do you guys do?"
"Take a seat," Blake said, before sitting next to Samuel.
I did as he said and sat down next to Sierra on the edge of the table.
"You're gonna get very weird-ed out in the next few minutes. Just a warning," Jared said, chuckling.
I nodded. "I mean yeah I figured, since I had to leave my whole life behind to get here and all," I said, trying to lighten the mood. It wasn't really that funny, but Samuel grinned at me and some others chuckled.
"Okay so you've heard of the Avengers right?" Tex said.
"Yeah of course." I said. I personally admired the group.
"So we're like them. But more under cover." Sierra said.
I raised my eyebrows. "For real?"
Roman nodded, "The majority of us have talents or powers, but there are others too. We have a large network across the world."
"The avengers are much more popular because of where they come from, and because they're rich," Josy said.
I take a moment, looking at them one by one. "So, are you from like, America?"
"No, we're actually based in New Zealand, but we spend lots of time out in other countries, on missions. The reason we're so effective, is because we stay undercover. The Avengers are so popular, it makes them an open target." Blake said.
"We call ourselves Miluashca. It's some kind of combination of the names of the people that started this group," Roman said.
"Oh, I see," For a second, I didn't say anything else. To be fair, I didn't know what to say anyway. Everyone else stays quiet too. They seem to want to let me take my time with this stuff. The only sounds in the room were Gray's rapid fingers fiddling with his rubix cube, and Jared knife scraping on a metal rod. "So, uh," I cleared my throat. "What's next for me?"
Gray stopped twisting the cube. "Ryder," I looked at him expectantly. "Tell us, what do you think will happen?"
I thought for a few moments, before shrugging. "I don't know. I mean you guys said something about me joining in," I said, looking to Blake and Sierra. Before I could stop them, the next few words flew out my mouth. "I'm not sure it matters to me,"
Gray uncrossed his legs and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, seeming more interested. "Is that so? Why's that then?"
Gray seemed like a mystery card. Unpredictable and perplexing. I wondered how much I wanted to reveal to them. I decided I wouldn't bore them with my whole life story. "There's nothing left for me here,"
Everyone else stayed quiet, leaving Gray and me to the conversation. "I see." he looked at me as if he was choosing his next words carefully, but that seemed to be the constant emotion on his face. "Now that we've told you who we are, what do you want?"
I felt everyone's eyes on me. Except Reeve's. He seemed fiddling with some kind of revolver now. "Anything, except going home," I said.
Gray gave a small smile, before crossing his legs and twisting the layers on his cube, fully resolving it. "I like the way you think and speak." he said.
Everyone seems kind of shocked, as if it was weird for Gray to be like that, but Sierra spoke after a few minutes. "If you want, we can take you back to New Zealand. We have leads, so we can give you a new name and identity, and train you to be one of us. What do you say?"
I didn't hesitate. "Sure." I said. Reeve groaned from the other side of the room. Gray looked to me.
"Don't mind him, he always acts like he's suffering from crippling constipation," he said.
Jared chuckled and Samuel stifled a laugh unsuccessfully, making me smile. Reeve looked up at Gray and growled, but Gray didn't seem intimidated.
Sierra and Roman then took me to the other room and ask me about information they needed to make me a new passport and stuff.
"Okay now say a random word. The first thing you think of. Most people have to do this multiple times,"
"Black," I said .
Roman tilted his head. "Ryder Black. Not bad if you ask me."
"Yeah," Sierra added. "You've done well. Unless you particularly want one, most of us don't bother with middle names,"
I shrugged, "I think it sounds cool enough,"
"That's true," Roman said.
"You seemed to have made a good impression on Gray," Sierra said.
"Is it hard to impress him?" I wanted to know.
Roman shrugged. "He never really voices his opinion on people until later on, but he's quite judgemental. And he's nearly always right, so the fact that he has taken a liking towards you, gives the rest of us more confidence to support you,"
I sat back in my seat, satisfied.
They asked stuff like my date of birth and other things, which they altered very slightly to create me a new identity, before we went back to the other room.
"What's your new name?" Blake asked.
"Ryder Black," I said.
"Pretty name," Josy said. I noticed people calling her Josy rather than Josephine, so I assumed she preferred to go by that.
Tex and Blake then talked about how they were supposed to retrieve a package from the parking lot but the guys hadn't turned up.
"Ryder, you can take some rest if you like, we're leaving early in the morning," Sierra said.
"I'm okay thanks, I'm not tired yet," I replied. Everyone disperses into their own conversations and Tex, Roman and Blake decide their going to chase down their dealers.
Samuel came over to me. "Hey," He said. He had his hands tucked into his jean pockets, stood in front of me awkwardly.
"Hi," I said timidly.
"Do you want to go to the other room? I'll show you pictures of the people you haven't met yet," he asked. "If you want," he added.
"Sure," I said and followed him into the other room.
