29: Sunset
Ryder's POV
"Rye, come on, let's go somewhere," Sam said, standing up from the sofa in our room at around 6.
"Where?" I asked.
"I'll show you," he grabbed his guitar. "Bring your bass," he said. "I promise it'll be worth it,"
We entered the lift and Sam pressed a weird combination of buttons: 7,6,5,4,3,2, and then 11. "Where does that take us?" I asked curiously.
"You'll see," he said.
"This level is for restricted personnel only. Please identify yourself," the lift voice said.
"Samuel Hargrave, plus 1," he said.
"Samuel Hargrave plus 1, access granted," it spoke, before the lift moved up.
"I will never get over how cool that is," I said.
The lift stopped. "Come on," Sam said, leading me out. The lift closed behind us, and we were in a dark small room. Sam used a key on the door directly in front of us, and pushed it open. As he did so, light spilled into the dark room. He took my hand and led me out, making me blush.
As I stepped out, I had to cover my eyes, as the sun was right ahead, over the trees. On the floor, there was a small blanket, with a box, and a couple of monster cans and sweets. I look around us. "We're on the roof?" I asked. I couldn't help but feel that this was so romantic.
"Yeah, I figured it would be nice to watch the sunset. I also realised it would be a little bright for your eyes, so I bought my sunglasses for you," he said, passing them to me.
"Thanks," I said, "I'm guessing your eyes are fine with it,"
He nodded, "Yeah, it doesn't really bother me. I only own the sunglasses because they make me look cool." He sat down, and I did too. "I got us a monster each, since we won't be getting drunk at the party like most people."
"Thanks Sam," I opened mine and took a sip, mirroring Sam's actions. "I actually use to drink monster all the time back in England," I said.
"I think you mentioned that before. I would drink it more often, but it's not really good for keeping fit and stuff, and we have to order it in from outside,"
"Yeah, but I guess occasionally we can have it as a little treat," I said.
He nodded. "Can we play our song now?" he asked, referring to Tennessee Whiskey.
I smiled. I liked how he referred to it as our song. "Yeah, sure,"
We sang through the song, and played too. We sounded really good together, both vocally and with our instruments. I wished that moment would last forever.
Sam cleared his throat afterwards. "I bought you some things," he said, reaching for the box. "Before you say I didn't have to, and stuff, I just want to say, I wanted to, okay?" he said, making me giggle.
"Yeah okay," I said.
He first handed me two plastic wrapped packages. I opened one of them: It was an arctic monkeys hoodie.
"I know you love your hoodies, so I figured I would get these," he said. I opened the other one too. It was Yung Gravy's Gasanova hoodie. "I know you're obsessed with Yung Gravy as well, and I thought you'd like it,"
"I love them Sam! I've wanted both of these for ages," I said. "Thank you,"
He smiled, content with himself, before handing me a slightly heavier box. "I thought that your table was looking a little bare, so I got some things to fix that," he said.
"Jeez, how many are there?" I asked. I opened the box to see a thick glass rectangle inside, and when I picked it up, there was a 3D image inside, of the polaroid that me and Sam took on my first day here. "Aw Sam, I love this photo of us so much. I'm definitely putting this next to my bed."
"Glad you like it, I wasn't sure if you'd think I'm weird," he chuckled.
I shook my head. "No of course not, this is super cool," I said.
The next one was a much smaller box, maybe only a couple of centimetres wide. Inside was a set of two guitar pics, one with our polaroid on it, and the other with the spotify scan code. "Does it scan to Tennessee Whiskey?" I asked.
"Try it," he said. I did, and I was right. "There's a couple of things themed on that,"
He passed me another two, one of them slightly larger. "Sam why are there so many!" I said. He had gotten me more than enough already.
"There's one more after these. Then I'm done, I promise," he chuckled.
I opened the biggest one first. It was a thin glass slab, with the album cover of Tennessee Whiskey, and the spotify code underneath. It was designed to look similar to a spotify screen. "This is so cool! I didn't even know you could get these. I can put it next to this," I said, pointing to the glass image of the two of us.
"Yeah, I actually wanted to get a different one that was much cooler but it wouldn't have arrived in time," he admitted.
"That's okay, I love this one," he smiled. I moved on to the smaller one. I lifted the lid off, and removed the tissue paper. There was three separate little silk pouches in there. The first one I opened had a silver keyring, with song code on it. "This is sick," I commented, before opening the next. It was a bracelet, also silver, with the code on it. I took it out of the packaging, and placed it around my wrist, attempting to put it on with one hand and failing.
"Here, I'll do it," Sam said, and I held out my hand for him. He gently hooked the bracelet on, before turning my hand, to admire it. "Do you like it?"
"Yes! I'll wear it everyday," I said. I opened the last one, and it was a silver necklace with a beam hanging from it. The beam had the same spotify code. "These are so cool! Shall I wear it now?" I asked.
He went to nod, before stopping and reaching for the last present, and passing it to me. "Open this first,"
I nodded and did so. It was a beautiful silver chain necklace, with a pretty light blue gemstone sitting in a catch. Below it in the box, it said March Birthstone: Aquamarine. My jaw dropped. It felt too valuable for me to own. "Sam this is- Are you-"
"I know what you're going to say, but again, I wanted to," he said. "Will you wear it tonight? Or right now?" he asked.
"Yeah, sure," I took off my hoodie, because I had a plain blain shirt underneath. I gently removed the necklace from the box.
"Shall I do it for you?" he asked.
I nodded, and he took it from me and leaned closer to me, taking the necklace around my neck and snaking his arms around me, for the purpose of putting the necklace on. Once he was done, he pulled away again, just like that.
"I- Can you put your hair down- For the party, at least?" he asked.
"I never put it down," I said.
"That's why I asked." Sam chuckled.
I nodded. "Sure, if you want me to," I laughed too. I pulled out my phone to look in the camera at my necklace. "Thank you so much, Sam. Honestly, this is more than I've ever wanted," he did his signature grin.
"I'm glad you liked it," he said, before taking a swig from his monster. "Sun's setting now," he said. I moved to sit beside him, so that I was facing the sun. I took a few photos of it, before Sam took my phone and flipped the camera around, to us. He took a few photos of us, messing around, me looking cool with my Ray Ban sunglasses that happened to be Sam's. We stopped shortly after to watch the sunset. Arctic Monkeys' AM album was playing from Sam's phone.
"I love this vibe, we should do it often," I said. "Monsters in hand, sweets, vibey music playing, sunset just out of reach," I finished.
"Yeah, I used to come up here at night when I couldn't sleep, but I never really had anyone to go with."
"Now you're not lonely," I chuckled. He agreed, and we sat like that for a while, humming along to music, eating sweets, till it was dark.
I picked up my phone and checked the time. 8:37.
"We should probably go now huh?" Sam asked.
"Yeah," I said. I placed all my presents from Sam back into the big box they were initially in, and helped him fold up the blanket. He placed the sweet packets into the box with my presents.
"Midnight snacks," he said, giving me a playful wink. For a second, I was glad it was dark so he couldn't see me blush, but then I realised he could see in the dark and face-palmed.
He held my bass for me while I held the box. The bat sling Gray made me was really proving to be useful, as I had a lot to carry. Once we got back to our room, I placed the two glass slabs on my bedside table, and put the other things in my dresser. I put the hoodies on hangers in the cupboard, and decided to change clothes.
"What shall I wear?" I asked Sam. He came over to my wardrobe and looked through it.
"How about this," he said pointing to my short black skirt. I had got it from the airport, but I hadn't worn it once yet.
I shrugged. "Sure why not. What shall I wear it with?"
He looked through my shirts, before he picked out a satin blue button down.
"It'll match with your necklace," he said.
"You're pretty good at this you know," I said, and he chuckled.
I changed in the bathroom and wore my all black high top converses with them. As Sam had requested, I let my hair down. It was longer than my shoulders, and rich black in colour. My hair naturally was wavy, but every morning I would straighten it, just because it was easier to tie up. I partitioned it on the right, and once I felt I looked presentable, I walked back out of the bathroom. Sam looked up from where he was tying his shoelace. He himself had changed into black jeans and a blue hoodie.
"Wow, you look good," he said. "I mean you always look good, but this outfit is sick," I blushed.
"Stop," I giggled. "I'm going red,"
He chuckled. "Sorry, sorry I'll shut up now," he said. "Your hair looks really cool down," he added. "You should do it more often."
"Thanks," I said. He made me feel confident, and I liked that. I slung my bat on, and finished off my monster.
"Ready to go?" he asked.
"Yeah," I said, following him out the room.
