26: My Bat Is Vibranium
Ryder's POV
I continued to practise until Sam wandered in.
"Hey, it's nearly 12," he said. "Wow, nobody's used that thing in ages," he gestured to the cage.
"Yeah, Gray did say. Sam guess what?"
"What?"
"My bat is Vibranium," I said.
He raised his eyebrows. "For real?"
I handed it to him. "Yeah, Gray made it for me,"
"That's so sick! It's so light, is it hollow?" he gripped it, getting a feel for it.
"No, it's solid, but I asked the same thing. It feels unusually light right?" I asked.
"Yeah," he handed it back to me. "Have you been practising all morning?"
I nodded, "Yeah, I'm getting used to it now, I get to keep them both too,"
"You probably should carry the vibranium one around with you all the time," Sam said.
"Yeah, Gray said not to let it out of my sight." I agreed.
"Lets go get lunch. Do you want to leave the wooden one in our room first?" Sam asked.
"Yeah, if that's okay,"
After leaving the wooden bat in our room, we went to have lunch, which was southern fried chicken, and potato wedges.
"Hey cool bat," Nash said, he nudged Hayes. "Remember when we used to play baseball with Dad and his brothers?"
Hayes nodded. "It would be cool to get a game on some day,"
"Yeah I'd play," Taylor said.
"Me too," Jared added.
"I don't know how to play," I said, "I've only ever watched it on tv."
"We'll teach you," Nash said.
"She does have quite the hitting technique though," Gray said.
"We can play sometime and you can show us what you got," Hayes said.
"Sure," I chuckled.
Once we finished food, we went and lifted some weights and did some other working out. Sam put on his speaker and played Chris Stapleton.
"I love this song so much," I said as Tennessee Whiskey came on. "It's my favourite by Stapleton."
"Yeah it's pretty good," Sam agreed.
After we finished up, we went to Gray's lab, to ask if he needed any favours. I made sure to keep a special eye on my bat.
"What've you got for us today?" Sam said as we walked in.
"Could you get these papers to Mila? And tell her she needs to go and see the doctor tomorrow," He handed Sam a wad of papers. "If you see Jared, tell him I have a prototype for him to come and see, and could you take this to the guard tower? Let them know I need it sent by tomorrow,"
"Cool, got it," Sam said, grabbing the package. "Anything else?"
"Nope, that's all for today, enjoy yourselves kids," he said. "And keep that safe." he gestured to my bat. "I know you won't leave it around, I just have to drill it into your head for the first few days," he joked.
I smiled. "I will, thanks again," I said before we left.
Sam showed me to the guard tower, and showed me where to take things to be mailed off. We saw Jared and Taylor in the gym and told him Gray wanted to see him. Then we went to Mila.
I knocked on the door. Mila opened. "Hey Kids, how are you doing today?" she asked.
"Good thanks," we both replied. "Gray asked if we could bring this to you," Sam said.
"And remind you to go to the doctor tomorrow," I added.
"Oh! Thank you sweetie, I completely forgot about that. Sit down, if you're not busy," she said. Texas and Mila's bedroom was similar to ours, though instead of two beds, it had more storage and seating areas, and one large bed in the middle.
We sat down, since we didn't have anything else to do. "I already told Ryder that you're going to have twins,"
She gave us an affectionate smile. "I hope my babies grow up to be like you two," she said. "Do you like babies?"
"I guess so," I said. "I hope I have twins one day," I added.
Mila tilted her head, amused. "Any particular reason?"
"So that one or the other doesn't feel favoured or privileged because they're older or younger. If you know what I mean,"
"Yeah, I understand. My parents would always spoil my younger sister and my older brother, but me in the middle, I go no attention. Right?"
"Yeah, I want them to feel equal," I said.
"That's a very beautiful thought,"
We sat and talked for a little longer, before we decided we would go for dinner. As Craig had promised the day before, he had made pizza, especially for Sam and I.
We shared it, and boy, was it delicious.
"You were certainly not wrong, this is the best pizza I've ever had," I said.
"I love Craig's pesto pasta and all, but it's very difficult to not notice the two kids munching on pizza to my left," Jared said.
"I would give you some, but I don't really want to," Sam said, earning chuckles.
"If I really wanted it kid, you'd be bleeding out of the floor right now," Jared said, chuckling, not really threatening.
"Mhm sure, we all know I'm your favourite here," Sam said, grinning.
"Sure kid, though you're not far ahead of bassist over there," he said nodding to me.
"Bassist?" Sierra questioned.
"Ryder's quite the musician, she played bass with us yesterday," Paul said.
"I had no idea you could play," Sierra said. "It's great that you're really getting know everyone and settling in well," she gave me a kind smile, which I returned.
