24: Never Had A Party
Ryder's POV
"There's instruments here?" I asked.
"Do you play?" Sam asked.
I nodded. "One of the things that used to keep me going,"
"What do you play?"
"Piano, bass guitar, and little bit of regular guitar, uke, and I have singing grades too," I listed.
"You just keep surprising me," he mumbled, pushing the sound proof door and holding it open for me. Upon hearing the door open, the band stopped playing. Inside the room, I saw many instruments, and Jared, with 2 other men
"Hey Samuel, Ryder," Jared said, holding a guitar.
"Hey, I just thought I'd show Ryder the room and stuff," Sam said. "You know Jared already, that's Paul Niven," he motioned to the man sitting at the drums, "And that's Glen Hallett," he waved to the bassist. "And they are called 80 Seconds To Saturn," They gave me waves and nods.
(a/n if you know the reference in the band name you're amazing)
"That's a cool band name," I said. "I've always wanted to play in a band,"
"Do you play anything?" Glen asked.
"Yeah some instruments. I mainly play piano and bass though," I said, motioning to the bass he himself was holding.
"Oh for real? We're the only two bassists on this entire facility, you know," He chuckled.
"Nobody else plays bass?" I asked.
He shook his head. "I tried to convince Samuel, but he leaned towards guitar, which was a good idea I guess, because you two can play together now," Glen said.
"Wait you play guitar?" I looked to Sam.
"Kind of," he said. "I'm new to it,"
Jared rolled his eyes. "I've been teaching him for 6 years."
"I'm not very good though," Sam jumped in.
"Sure," I said, skeptically chuckling. "I've been playing bass for that much time. There was a teacher at my school who let me use the bass there. I taught myself. I've been playing piano for 8 years though." I explained.
"You started at a young age, you must be very talented," Paul said.
I shrugged, "I never had real lessons, so not really,"
"Well if you ever want to play, feel free to come in," Jared said.
"Yeah, and if you have any doubts or want playing advice, just give a shout," Glen said.
"Thanks, that's cool of you guys," I said.
"Do you wanna play something now?" Glen asked. He didn't really wait for me to answer, he lifted his bass strap from his shoulder and handed it to me.
My eyes widened. "Are you sure? What do I play?"
"Anything you like," Paul said.
"They play Arctic Monkeys sometimes, do you know how to play any songs?" Sam helped out.
"How about R U Mine?" Glen suggested.
I laughed nervously. "I know how to play it, but I haven't practised in a while,"
"That's fine, me and Paul can back you up," Jared said.
I was nervous, but I shrugged and nodded.
(a/n: here is a link in case you don't know it)
Surprising myself, as soon as I got into it, the bassline came back to me, and I played it better than I had in quite a while. Jared did the vocals well, and I joined in where I could. I was worried that at some point I would mess up, but I didn't. Jared aced his guitar solo, before we all came back in for the main riff. Paul also played his drum rolls and runs expertly.
They all clapped for me once we finished, making me smile.
"That was amazing! It sounded just like the original," Sam said.
"How old are you?" Glen asked.
"13 next month," I said.
"How can you play that well at such a young age?" he asked.
"I was surprised when you added in the backing vocals, Glen definitely couldn't do that at your age," Jared said, and Glen nodded in agreement.
"Honestly, if you ever want to jam, just let us know, it would be our pleasure to play with you," Paul added. "You're an incredibly talented kid,"
I grinned, "Thanks, I really appreciate that, I never had a bass at home, I always had to use the school one, so it's nice to know there's one I can use whenever I want, thank you,"
"You said that you turn 13 next month, right?" Jared asked. "It's mine and Taylor's birthday on the 16th and 19th. What date is yours?"
"14th, and I think Sam mentioned it to me the other day," I said.
"Yeah I was telling her about how y'all throw huge parties," Sam said.
"Yeah haha, where the party is, we are," Jared spoke. "Instead of a party for me and Taylor, like usual, we can have one for the three of us,"
"Really?" they nodded. "I've never had a party before," I said.
Everyone showed signs of disbelief. "For real?" Jared said.
"Not even one?" Paul asked.
"That's insane, you've missed out on so much in your life," Glen said.
"We can make up for it with this party, right?" Sam said.
I nodded. "You don't have to, but thanks,"
They waved it off. "You've earned it." Paul said. "Do you want to play another song?"
They all looked at me, pleading. "Sure, why not," I said. "I Want It All - AM?" I was more confident now.
(a/n here's a link to the anthem :)))
We all vibed for this song, not caring if we looked stupid, but bopping along, singing all the lyrics.
I handed the bass back to Glen, thanking him for letting me use it.
"Shall we go back now?" I asked Sam.
"Yeah sure, come on, see you guys later," he said. I thanked them again before we left.
"Damn, you're really good at bass," Sam said once we left.
"Thanks Sam, maybe one day you can play guitar to me," I said.
"Yeah maybe, we could play together. Where do you want to go now?"
"I'm getting kinda tired . . ." I trailed off.
"Yeah me too, shall we go to bed?" he asked.
"Yeah, if that's okay,"
"It's probably best, we have a run early in the morning," he said.
I smiled. "Looking forward to it,"
