22: Straight Off The Bat

Ryder's POV

As he had done before, Jeremy led us into Rick's room. "Sir, Samuel and Ryder are here,"

"Thank you, you may go," Rick said. Rick was sat at his desk this time, and Gray was stood not too far from him. Laid out on the desk, was a range of weapons, from rifles, to knives, to tasers. "Ryder, I hope you've had a chance to settle in better now," he said.

"Yes, thanks," I said.

"We called you here because we want to talk to you about your purpose here," Gray said.

"The 4 that picked you up at the store in England, brought you here with the initial intention of training you to work with us, to join our cause," Rick said. The two men seemed to take turns talking.

"Since your arrival, it has been made evident that there are multiple routes that you could go down here." Gray inputted.

"You have an interest in flights: you could become an incredible pilot for us,"

"You could select a weapon: become an up close fighter,"

"Gray could teach you to code: you could become a hacker." Rick said. "But we want to know what you want. We want to know what you're drawn to."

"As you can see, I have brought some our finest weapons up here. You may not know how to use some of them, but what do you feel you could use? If there's nothing that takes your fancy, that's fine as well." Gray said.

"Look around you, take you time." I did as Rick said, and look around the room. A baseball bat in a glass casing caught my eye, but I ignored it and kept looking. "You've seen something?" Rick asked, as he noticed my thoughts were occupied.

I shrugged before taking a few slow steps towards the bat. I felt all three pairs of eyes on me, as I looked at the baseball bat.

"That's more of a show piece, than a weapon," Rick chuckled.

"It could be a weapon," I said. When nobody said anything, I turned back around to face them.

"She's not wrong," Sam said.

Gray tilted his head, looking at me. "Original, I like it," he said.

Rick nodded in agreement. "This meeting is over," he said, and Sam gently tugged on my sleeve, reminding me to follow him out of the room.

"I think Rick likes you. Rick and Gray are the hardest to impress, but Gray liked you straight off the bat-" he paused. "-no pun intended," he smirked, making me laugh, "But yeah like I was saying, you've cracked the toughest cookies."

"That's good to know,"

We returned to our room, and decided to spend the rest of the afternoon there. "You wanna play something?" Sam said, referring to the xBox.

"Yeah sure, what have you got? I haven't played before by the way," I said.

"Could you get the other end?" He said, grabbing one end of the sofa so we could face it to the TV. I helped him turn it. "Call Of Duty?"

"Okay, you'll have to teach me though," I said, sitting beside him. He switched it on and handed me a controller. I held it the correct way.

"Okay so you use this to move, this to shoot, this to re-load, this button to scope in, and this is to control where you're looking." He showed me of a few of the others controls, and set up the split screen. "You're on the left, I'm on the right,"

"I'm gonna be so bad at this," I said, as the 'Deathmatch' started.

"You'll be fine, just shoot the people with red things on their shoulders." I did as he said, and started to get the hang of things. "Fuck I died," he said, glancing at my half. "Wow, you're not bad," he said, respawning.

"Thanks." I said.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Sam stick his tongue ever so slightly out of the corner of his mouth. His concentration face was cute, but I made no comment and focussed back onto the game. I wasn't as good as Sam, and I died multiple times, but I was decent, for a first time.

We played for a couple of hours, having a real laugh, and I seemed to improve. "You're a natural, you're way better than I was the first day I played," he said.

"Thanks, my cousin always used to say my hand-eye coordination is good: pilot skills," I said, chuckling.

"Yeah, that's true, you'll be a great pilot. Did you cousin reply to the picture of us by the way?" he asked.

"I'll check in a sec," I said. Once we finished the game, I pulled out my phone. Surely enough, there was a reply from my cousin.

Jessy: Jeeeeeeeez! Lil sister is growin' up yeah? You two look good. Not bad choice sis, !'ve seen much worse 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 xxx

I decided I would censor it before telling Sam. "He said we look good, and that you look like a good guy," I said, before locking my phone and putting it away.

Sam smiled. "Glad he approves of me," he said. I wasn't sure what he meant by that, but I went along with it.
