14: Secret Mission
Ryder's POV
"Hey, do you two want to go on your first ever secret mission together?" Blake asked.
We shrugged. "Sure, why not," I said.
"Since Samuel has started going on flights with us, the sweets and drinks stock has diminished. How about the two of you restock it?"
I noticed that Sam was right. Nobody else called him Sam, not even his brother.
"Okay, since we're probably going to eat them anyway, I guess we can go on an adventure around the airport." Sam said, grinning.
"Does anyone have an secret mission requirements? Like fruit pastilles, or sour patch kids?" I asked, going along with the whole theme.
"Ew to both of them," Josy chuckled. "I would like some chocolate buttons though,"
"Wine gums for me please," Jared added.
Nobody else wanted anything. Sam asked Reeve. "Hey Reeve, do you want anything?" He shook his head. "Are you sure?" he seemed to reconsider, and shrugged.
"Parma Violets." he said, a few seconds later.
Sam nodded. "Got it. Okay we'll be back in a bit, let's go, partner," he said, smirking at me before we were once again alone.
"So, buttons for Josy, wine gums for Jared, parma violets for Reeve," I repeated, a few minutes.
"I didn't really take Reeve for a 'parma violets' kind of guy," Sam said.
I frowned. "It feels like he hates me,"
"He's just a bit pissed off because of what Gray said earlier. It might take a few days for him to start talking to you, but he doesn't hate you. He probably even sees a bit of his daughter in you," I gave him a questioning look. "Reeve lost his daughter 4 years ago. She was 14, and would have been 18 now. She was convinced that she was ready for a mission, but everyone said no, since she was too young. She got angry with us and escaped. She tried to carry out the mission herself, to prove that she could do this, but they captured her, and we have since assumed that she is dead,"
"That's really awful. Why assumed? Didn't anyone go after her?" I wondered.
Sam shook his head. "They her choker. It was her favourite, and she never took it off. It was covered in blood, and even Reeve didn't want to risk losing more gifted beings to rescue someone who was probably dead,"
"That must have been horrible for him," I was unsure what else I could say, but Sam just gave me a sad nod.
We grabbed sweets and drinks and returned to the group. We only had an hour before we would get back on the plane, so we just chatted with the others.
I handed Reeve his parma violets. He looked at me with an expression I couldn't read before taking it, and mumbling a thanks. I gave him a smile, but he didn't return it.
"Did you guys meet any resistance on your mission?" Roman asked.
"We had to look in three shops to find Jared's wine gums," Sam said.
"Yeah, the lady at the checkout looked at us like we were insane," I added.
"Thank you, I will repay the favour one day," Jared said, already opening his packet.
By about 10:30, we bought lunch and boarded the plane, so we could eat it in the air. Me, Sam, Jared and Taylor got Burger King, and the others got Subway.
