13: Very Long Second

Ryder's POV

As it was late in the evening, most of us fell asleep from jet lag on the second flight.

As me and Sam listened to You Me At Six, I found myself drifting off to sleep before flinching awake each time my head hit his shoulder. After this happened a few times, Sam chuckled.

"It's okay, you can lean on me," he said, shifting slight in his seat so that I would be comfortable.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah,"

"Okay well, if it gets annoying, just wake me up, okay?"

"Sure," he said.

I rested my head on his shoulder, and before I knew it, I was asleep. Thankfully, I never snore, or drool, and after about 20 minutes, Sam gently placed his head on top of mine, eventually falling asleep as well.

Towards the end of the flight, my eyes fluttered open. I didn't move, because I could very obviously feel that Sam was asleep on me, but I looked around.

Sierra glanced at me, seeing that I had opened my eyes. "Never seen him sleep so well on a plane," she whispered, smiling. I thought about what Sam had said earlier, about Sierra being the mother figure in his life. I wondered if she was married, or had any children herself.

I smiled at her. "How long till we land?" I mouthed.

"15 minutes," she whispered back.

I closed my eyes again, and as we both had our seatbelts on, there was no need for me to wake Sam till after we had landed.

It was about half 6 in the morning by the time we landed in Indonesia. I couldn't quite pronounce the airport name, but we were in Jakarta. The motion from the landing woke both me again, and Sam.

He sat up straight in his seat, before leaning forward on the desk and resting his head on his crossed arms. "I'm not ready to wake up," he whined, making me smile.

"You can sleep in the airport, you have 4 hours," Taylor said.

I noticed that all this time, Reeve hadn't said a single word to me or Sam. I wondered if he really hated me that much, but I decided not to overthink it. Multiple people had already told me that he would take time to warm up.

"If I stand up, I'm not gonna fall asleep again," Sam groaned, but he took off his seatbelt and stood up anyway, giving me a tired smile.

As we stepped off the plane the warm air really hit us. It was warmer than both England and Oman, even though the sun was barely out yet. I pulled off my hoodie and wrapped it around my waist, and Sam did the same with his.

We still had to go through checking each time, but it just wasn't as bad as it should have been as lots of people were paid to turn blind eyes for us. Sam bought me a toothbrush and some other stuff, so that I could freshen up in the bathroom.

The 12 of us had breakfast in some kind of waffle house. Waffles weren't really my thing, but I didn't complain, and had them anyway.

Just as we had done in Oman, me and Sam departed from the tired group, and wandered around the huge airport, messing around in shops and chatting away.

"You know, when we get back home, everything that we buy on the way, is all that you're gonna have in our room. Besides furniture. That's why I'm so keen on buying you stuff," Sam reasoned with me, trying to convince me into getting a Pacman alarm clock.

(a photo, for reference)

"I know but is a Pacman alarm clock really necessary?" I giggled.

"Yes! How else are you gonna tell the time?"

"Uh, with a phone?"

"Okay what if your phone was out of charge, and you really needed to know the time," he tilted his head.

"I'd ask you?"

"And if my phone was also dead?"

I rolled my eyes playfully. "Okay I accept defeat. It is essential,"

Sam punched the air in victory. "I also just wanna be able to see it from across the room," he admitted, making me laugh.

To kill some time, we went to a men's clothing store, where Sam tried on some shirts, and asked me to rate them out of ten. I actually had a small thing for button down shirts, but Sam obviously didn't know that.

The first couple of shirts were okay. They looked good on him, for sure, but they were severely outdone. Sam opened the door to him in a black button down shirt. He teasingly left the top few buttons undone, causing me to shamelessly stare at him.

"I . . . didn't know whether to pick the short sleeved one or the long sleeved one," he was wearing the latter, but I know they'd both look amazing.

I cleared my throat and forced myself out of my daze. "You look- That shirt looks really good on you Sam. It's my favourite so far," I said, trying to be cool and not come off too strong.

"Should I get it? Or the short sleeved one? Or both?" he asked, looking at himself in the mirror behind me.

"I'd say both," I prayed that he would get back into the cubicle and change into his other outfit, because I couldn't take my eyes off him.

"I wasn't sure if it would look good or not," he trailed off, adjusting the cuffs.

"It looks fine, Sam," I convinced him, as he seemed to not quite believe it the first few times.

"Thanks," his gaze slid from the mirror behind me, to my eyes, for a very long second, before he disappeared back into the cubicle, leaving me red and frozen.

I scolded myself for reacting like that. He's just a random boy. But I had met plenty of boys before, and none of them seemed to have this effect on me.

Sam ended up buying the two shirts, and we returned to the other with 2 hours to spare before re-boarding.

"What did you two get up to?" Taylor asked, while he drank what looked like beer.

"Just lookin' around shops and stuff. I bought a couple of shirts," Sam said.

"Let's have a look," Jared said. Sam took out the two neatly packed shirts.

"I'll bet Ryder chose those. Looks too classy for the Samuel I know," Blake said.

I nodded sheepishly. "I thought they looked cool on him,"

Tex nodded. "If there were any teen girls at Miluashca, they'd be swooning," he said, earning a few chuckles.

Already did, I thought to myself.
