11: Trust Me And Wait Here
Ryder's POV
We left our bags and stuff on the plane. We would be at the airport for the next 3 hours, as there were certain checks and refuelling processes that had to done by Blake and Hayes.
Sam had his own card, though it wasn't a black card like Gray's, which is understandable since he's still a kid and all. Sierra told him to take me around the airport's duty free stores, to buy whatever takes my fancy, and that she'd transfer some money into his account to compensate.
"Don't bother, I don't mind," Sam said, leading me away. I saw Sierra give him a proud look before going back to the others. "I wanted to get a bag," Sam said.
"Any particular type?"
"A knapsack,"
"A what?" I asked, confused.
"You know, like a rucksack?" Sam searched for words to make me understand. "The kind of bag you take to school,"
"Ohhhhh," I said slowly. "I know what you mean now,"
"I had one, but Reeve wanted to take his anger out on something, and my bag happened to be the first thing in sight," I giggled. "You can get one too, it's useful to have a smaller bag than a suitcase,"
We went into a baggage store, and walked around the suitcases to the back of the store where there were school bags.
Sam picked a plain navy blue one, and I picked a light blue one, with dark blue streaks here and there. "Now if we buy things, we can put them in here,"
"That's smart. You don't have to buy me anything else by the way, you guys have done more than enough for me," I said, feeling kinda bad that a boy my age was spending his own personal money on me.
"It's doesn't matter, I promise," he said, as we looked at jewelry. "Meeting you made me realise that not everyone has life as easy as I do. I've grown up around people who will give me whatever I want, whenever I want, and I've taken full advantage of that in the past. Whereas you, for example, you haven't had that kind of life. So the fact that I can buy things for you, makes me feel better about the spoilt life I've had."
I tilted my head, sighing. "That's so sweet of you. Thank you Sam, it means a lot to me. And you're not spoilt. Spoilt people aren't as compassionate as you. Not as caring." I looked away from his eyes, because they were distracting me, and slipped my finger into a ring. It was made up of three separate, thin, rings, that were twisted around each other in a way that looked beautiful.
"I guess I haven't really spent any time around people my age, and I don't want to say the wrong things and scare you off. That looks really nice, do you want it?"
I decided it was too expensive, and shook my head, slipping it back off. "No it's okay, and don't worry about scaring me off. It usually takes me a while to trust people, but I feel safe around you. My whole life I've had to deal with my friends stabbing me in the back, one after the other, but it's different with you guys. There's no other kids who are gonna gang up against me with you, and stuff and---" I paused. "I talk too much don't I?"
Sam frowned, as we walked towards the exit of the shop. "No not at all." he stopped as we neared the door. "Wait, do I talk too much?"
I chuckled, "No, I just thought I was probably talking too much about my old life and stuff that probably doesn't even matter,"
"I like to hear about what it was like for you. I've never lived a normal life, or gone to a normal school. I had this idea that it was all perfect and everyone got along well, but I'm guessing things weren't like that for you." Sam put a hand on my shoulder, and turned me so I was facing the exit. "Wait here okay? I'll be back in a sec,"
"Where are you going?" I asked, confused.
"Just trust me, and wait here, please?" he asked.
"Okay, sure," I said. I wasn't sure what he was doing but I went along with it.
Sam's POV
Leaving Rye at the front of the shop, I went back to where she had tried on the ring. I had read many books where a boy met a girl, and then after dating for a while, he would buy her a promise ring. Not to be confused with an engagement ring. I had only known her for less than 24 hours, but we got along so well, and she clearly liked the ring a lot. I hoped that some day I would be able to ask her out, and give it to her.
It was silver, and simple. 3 rings entwined together. It was 75.99 Omani Rials, which was about £143, or $198. I assumed that Rye had said she didn't want it because it looked expensive, but I didn't really care. I thought it looked beautiful on her hand, and it would mean the world for me if it was me that put it there.
I bought the ring, and placed it into my bag, thanking the checkout lady and returning to Rye.
Ryder's POV
Sam returned after a few minutes. "Okay let's go,"
"Did you get something?" I asked.
Sam shook his head. "I was just asking about something. Shall we go in there?" he pointed to a souvenir shop, and I stopped overthinking his absence.
"Yeah, I always loved going in gift shops,"
"Same, there's always so many cool things," Sam held the door open for me and we gave a nod to the shop owner.
We spent the next few minutes looking at random things. I picked up a deck of cards with some kind of Omani beach on it. "Hey look, Jared would like these," I said.
"Yeah, let's get it, it's his birthday next month. Good find," he said. "Jared and Taylor have their birthdays just days apart. They always throw a huge party for everyone, which is always fun,"
"Sounds cool," I said.
"Hey Rye, you wanna get these?" Sam showed me a whole shelf of aeroplane models. They were all realistic, featuring the common airlines that came in and out of the international airport. Oman Air, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, and others. When I simply admired them rather than saying anything, Sam spoke again. "I was talking to Sierra earlier. She said since we're kids, we can share a room. Obviously, if that's okay with you, if you don't want to, I understand. But basically in all the rooms there are these shelves that go into the wall, so it's like a chunk is missing from the wall and it has shelves in it. These would be perfect to go on yours right?"
I grinned. "I'd love to share a room with you. And yeah, I couldn't think of anything better to put on a shelf. Even if you hadn't said that, I probably would have put them there anyway. It's definitely a bit of me."
"I'm glad I got it right. Do you want one of each?"
My eyes widened. "But there's lots. And they're like 10 rials each!"
Sam playfully rolled his eyes. "Oh come on, I'm gonna pretend you didn't say that,"
I sighed. "Okay, okay. Thank you so much though, oh my god, they look so cool."
We chose Oman Air, British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Etihad Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Australian Airlines, American Airlines, and Air France. Since they were about 6 inches wingtip to wingtip each, we decided that this was enough. Sam wanted to buy me more but I said that I would never stop being grateful to him for what he's already done.
