Issue 21: Between An Angel and A Psycho (Again)
I walked into school like a zombie before leaning against a locker and trying to fall asleep like that.
"(Y,N)?" I heard someone say.
"What do you want-" I said before opening my eyes. "Marie?"
"Who were you expecting?"
"To be honest, Winter and for her to say I look like I'm sick." I said. Marie scoffed after.
"I hate her. She always tries to get under my skin." She said crossing her arms and frowning thinking about Winter.
"What are you doing here?"
"Oh, uhhhhhhh it's kinda my locker you're trying to sleep on." She said. I immediately pushed myself off the locker and out of her way.
"Sorry!" I said.
"It's fine." She said before walking over to her locker and putting in her lock combination. "So what's the matter?"
"Long night." I simply said.
I had been up all night thinking about that sniper girl. She seemed good. Really good. I started to wonder what else she's done and if I can even find her name. I got up out of bed and started checking my computer. Mom hacked into every city record and every security camera in Meteor and connected them to my desktop when I was 14. She said it would be good to make being a detective my hobby. After hours of searching I found multiple unsolved assassinations and murders over the last five years. All killed with a single bullet to the head. Not just in Meteor. Battery City. Brooklyn. Washington DC. Watchtown. She's been everywhere if they're all her. But no name, no age, and I didn't have a picture of her to run to try and see if any of the girls fleeing from the scene in some of these had the same facial features. Even then, none of the girls in the pictures looked the same, or like the sniper or whoever it was that looked like her in a disguise. By the time I was too tired to continue, I shut off my computer and crawled into bed. A minute later my alarm went off.
"Aw, that sucks. I hope you can get some shut eye tonight." Marie said with a smile on her face. She looked back into her locker and took some books out and I for some strange reason took them out of her hands and carried them for her. She took a second to process what just happened before she turned dark red. "Y-you don't have to d-do th-that! I can carry them myself!"
"It's fine, I've got it."
"N-no, I've got it! You shouldn't be pushing yourself you're already tired as it is!"
"It's just a couple books. I'll be fine." I said. She kept fighting but eventually gave up and let me carry them for her, although she insisted on carrying at least one book.
"Th-thanks." She said smiling at me.
"No problem." I said.
"So did Paris and Adrian give you any problems while I was out?" She asked me.
"At the beginning of the day. They were accusing me of blowing up downtown a few days back." I said.
"Ugh, unbelievable. What makes it worse is they knew that I was investigating the attacks yesterday." She said.
"Yeah, they surprisingly stopped after Victoria stood up for me."
"Tori Slater? How could she have helped?"
"We were in one of the stores when it was attacked." I said. "Anyway, Adrian seemed afraid of her."
"Really? I remember Paris being shaken up when I got back to the base yesterday."
"She seemed fine at the end of the day yesterday when she tried to interrogate me." I said. "So did you get any leads yesterday?"
"Funny you should mention it. Most of the footage from the security cameras got blown up with the security cameras. But I did see this one guy fighting a pretty shady looking girl by using red energy blasts and, I don't know, saving the da-"
"Don't push it." I said.
"Alright, fine." She giggled before smiling at me. "It would explain the cuts on your face. You know, even though you don't like being a hero, I still think you're a really good person." I went to open the door and she ran in front of me to open it for me. I noticed Winter looking down at her desk kind of depressingly. When she heard the door open her head immediately shot up and she looked extremely happy for a minute before a glare appeared on her face. She put on a smile and she walked over to us with her hands behind her back.
"Hey, bestie! Did you get the rest you needed? Doesn't look like it." She said passive aggressively. "Do you need some help with those books? Here, let me take them for you!" She said before ripping the books out of my hands and walking them over to the desk next to mine before "tripping" on the leg of her own desk. She sarcastically put her hands on her cheeks and gasped. "Oh no! I dropped the them!"
"You're stepping on my math book." Marie said.
"Oh, these are your books, Marcy? I had no idea!" Winter said. Marie groaned before we both went over to pick up her books while Winter sat in her desk. Marie was kneeling down by Winter's desk and Winter kicked her legs around purposely hitting Marie at every opportunity. That was until I peered over the desk and mounted "Stop" to her. She looked genuinely surprised that I told her to stop before I walked Marie's stuff to her desk.
"Thanks, again." Marie said with a smile.
"Anytime." I said before walking over to my desk. I immediately slammed my head down into my desk and I felt no pain. I felt like I was about to have the best dream of my life, unsure if it was because I hadn't slept in over 24 hours or if it was because of what just happened. I closed my eyes and started to fade into the dream land even as Winter talked to me. It felt like nothing could ruin my day.
The key phrase in that sentence was "felt like".
