Issue 18: Mama's Boy
"Ew, what happened to your face!?" Winter said walking up next to me right as I got on school campus.
"Hi, Winter. Nice to... okay I can't even lie when I'm trying to make a point." I said. Winter walked backwards so she could stare at my face as I looked dead ahead ignoring her.
"Alright, but seriously, what happened? Do you like... not know how to shave?"
"Why would I try to shave space right above my eye?"
"You wanted to shave your eyebrows but you don't have hand-eye coordination, pun very much intended."
"Unbelievable. You've reached new levels of stupid." I said.
. . .
"Unbelievable. You've reached new levels of stupid." I told mom. "Why would I change my entire ideology on superheroes for some girl I don't even like?"
"You like her enough to bring her to my damn house without permission."
"Is that what this is about?"
"You also like her enough to let her lie to you about what the world would be like without those freaks."
"She did have a good point."
"No she didn't. If all the heroes that created monsters were gone, the hidden ones would just get rid of the ones that made themselves."
"The hidden ones?"
"Anonymous has been... being him for twenty years and the closest the media ever got to mentioning him was when they reported on an unsolved murder of a serial killer in Watchtown."
"So you want some guy who doesn't have powers to take out every crime lord in the world?"
"Him and his ex partners, basically."
"Wait, he had partners?"
"Exactly! They were so good at their jobs the world doesn't even know they existed! The only one who people know about is Shadow Owl. Did you ever notice there wasn't a big media outcry when Whisper died? Because she was good at being a hero."
"Alright, mom, I get it. I promise I'm not going to let Prodigy change my view on heroes. Hell, I barely remember her name." I said.
"Alright, good." She said before looking at the whole in my mask. "Great. Now I have to fix this, too."
"Wow. I'm sorry for inconveniencing your day of acting like a freshman and watching movies." I said.
"Shut up before I make that Cyborg girl's laser holes look like a bullet wound next to a cannonball hole." Mom said.
. . .
"Aha! We knew it was you!" I groaned as I looked over at Paris and Adrian.
"Knew what was me?" I asked.
"Don't play stupid! Downtown was attacked by some freak who shot lasers at everyone! Sound familiar?" Paris said.
"Yeah. Winter. But she wasn't there." I said.
"And how would you know that?" Adrian asked.
"Because I was running errands when my head was almost burnt off." I said.
"A likely story. Explain the million scratches all over your face." Paris said.
"I got beaten up by a Cyborg." I said. After I did Adrian grabbed me by the collar.
"Oh you think we're going to believe that bull crap!?" He said before Winter went to push him but was stopped by Paris.
"I'm gonna give you until the count of 3 to get your fucking hands off of me." Winter and I said at the same time.
"Or else what? You gonna prove my point that your a-"
"Hey! Let him go!" All four of us looked over to see Victoria walking over to us. To my surprise, Adrian immediately let go of me the second he saw it was Victoria. "What's your problem?"
"Our problem is we know that (Y,N) was the psychopath who blew up downtown!" Adrian said.
"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard!" Victoria said. "Not only can he not shoot lasers out of his hands but I was talking to him when one of the stores were attacked. He actually went to go get help while I called the cops." She added.
"Wait, what?" Paris said.
"She said I couldn't have been the one who blew the joint up, like I told you." I said.
"Is there going to be any further problems between you two, Adrian? Because we can settle this once and for all." Victoria said.
"N-no. E-everything's cool." Adrian said. I raised an eyebrow at how cowardly he got all of the sudden. Maybe he has a crush on her. I thought. "C'mon, Paris, let's get out of here." He said nudging at her. Paris was also confused as she finally let go of Winter. She started to walk away before Winter pulled her by her hair.
"Ow!"
"If you touch me again, Ima show you what I had planned for your buddy Marin the other day." Winter whispered before letting go.
"You know her name is actually Marie, right?" I asked Winter.
"Who gives a shit?" She said.
"Those cuts are pretty bad." Victoria said looking at the few on my face that weren't covered up. "What exactly happened after you ran off?" She asked me.
"I went to try to evacuate the area and the attacker saw me. Did more than just cut up my face." I said pulling down my shirt to show her how bandaged up my torso was. Even Winter gasped.
"Holy shit! You didn't tell me that you were that fucked up!" She said.
"It's whatever." I said.
"You should be home right now!" Victoria said.
"I'll be fine. I promise." I said.
"Well, okay. If you think you'll be fine." She said. Then someone said "Hey Tori, come on! We'll be late for class!" Victoria looked at her friends and began walking towards them. She turned back to me and waved. "I'll see you in class... and... thanks for trying to be a hero yesterday." She said. My eye twitched but I kept on a small smile before she walked away.
"Why'd your eye twitch?" Winter asked me.
"A mix of both the tremendous pain the whole left side of my face is still in and the fact that she just called me a hero. Take your pick." I said.
