Chapter 13
Kota
Gray and I had remained in her memory world until she fell asleep in my arms. I opened my eyes to see Nate watching us closely along with Sean and Gabe. Gray was still asleep, my hand in hers. "So what did I miss?" I asked.
"Watch," Nate said as he held up his cellphone. My mouth fell open as I saw Gray reach out and take my hand. Her eyes opened for a split second. They were solid black and then both of us seemed to shimmer and gray out. We looked like we were in an old-time movie reel as both our eyes closed. "You both stayed like that for almost two hours, then you were both in color again and you woke up," he said shakily.
"What the fuck happened to you two?" Gabe hissed.
"I think she grabbed my hand in her sleep. All I know is we woke up in a field of flowers. She talked like she'd been there when she was little, but when I pushed, it sounded like during pioneer days. She became confused when I asked about the hardware store, her cabin, and her truck. Neither of us could get out of the pocket until she fell asleep in my arms. That's when I opened my eyes to see all of you staring at me - which is creepy as hell, I might add," I snorted.
"If she pulled you back to that time, it might help explain the tin-type coloring since photos were done with silver then," Sean mused. "Maybe that will help Victor narrow his search a bit." He looked me over, "Do you feel any different? Did you two...um..."
I chuckled, "Almost, but she felt the urge to bite me like the others and it freaked her out. She could hear us earlier, and she might even be able to hear us now, I'm not sure. She said she couldn't make herself wake up, but she tried."
"I think we need to have Silas and North make a list of all the people she talked about in this time, then you can add the names and places she mentioned in the dream walk, Kota," Owen said. "If we can find individuals from her memories, we might be able to create a sort of timeline that will help us find her true identity."
I nodded, considering his words. "That's a solid plan. I'll jot down what she said to me, then we can add their information along with anything Victor can find on the town itself."
"Does anyone else feel like we're in one of those old Nancy Drew mystery books?" Luke laughed. "Or better yet, a Scooby Doo scene? I keep waiting for someone to yell about those darn kids." We all laughed at his ridiculous comment, letting some of the tension slip away, if even just for a moment. With a grin, Luke passed me the notebook and I began recording every detail I could recall about the dream walk Gray had pulled me into.
The first rays of daylight streamed through the camper windows as I rubbed my eyes and looked up at Victor. He stood at the window, sipping a cup of what I assumed was hot coffee, a frown creasing his brow. "What's wrong," I muttered, standing from my place on the floor where I'd slept near to Gray.
"It's all back," he said, never looking away from the window. "The whole damn house and town, it's all back just like it was when we pulled in last night. Look," he said, pulling the small curtain aside.
My eyes widened as I looked at the unscathed bed and breakfast with a row of cars in the parking area. The rustic barn was just peeking into view from the field behind the house and the skies continued to pour a steady flow of rain from the ominous-looking clouds. "What the hell?" I gaped. Looking around, I saw Gray sitting up, rubbing her eyes looking lost and confused. "Hey, little ghost, how are you feeling?"
"Um, I'm not sure. How did I get here? The last thing I remember, we were having dinner in Clara's second dining room and you were all telling me about yourselves," she said, rubbing her arms as if she were cold.
"Do you remember Gabe talking to you, or you and me in a field?" I asked her. She shook her head no and I hummed to myself, noting the holes in her memory. "Well, let's wake the others and see if your friend needs our help with anything, okay?"
"Okay," Gray said and reached for my outstretched hand to stand up.
Author's Notes: Hmmm.....
I fully admit I'm struggling to write these days. Just a lot on my plate and the inspiration doesn't seem to be there. If you want to make suggestions, I'd love to hear them. ~ Eve
