You closed your eyes

yesterday

unbeknownst to me

too late because of the times

now, too sheltered to pay respects

isolated

when this wave has passed

I'll find the spot where you dwell.

But for now

my social brother

I'll have a toast to you

I'll raise it high

drink it deep

and cough at the burn

and smile in the remembrances

of forty years so quickly passed

and all the smiles that had yet to be.
