The beginning

Of course, "Stanley" had some explaining to do. The twins sat down and listened, as did Star and Marco. Dipper was eager to hear his story, wondering who the man in the trench coat was. According to Stan, the man at his side is his identical twin brother. They were very close back then - in the early 1960's. There was not a worry in the world for them. They didn't have much friends, however, that didn't matter. They had each other and that was enough.

Stanley was the toughest, both mentally and physically. He was always there to support his brother, Stanford. Stanford, being the twin with the brains, also had an unusual amount of fingers. He had six fingers on each hand, which he was often made fun of for. Stanley usually always had a part of his body covered up with a band aid, since he was always getting hurt from his rowdiness. Their mother, Shirley, didn't consider it as 'careless' or 'uncontrollable'. She liked to think of it as 'personality'. As for their father, Filbrick, he wasn't amused. He was never impressed, never aroused. He was tough to break, like a cinder block.

One day, while Stanley and Stanford were searching for treasure, like they usually did, they came across a beaten, old boat. They named it the Stan O' War, considering both of their names began with Stan. When they both found the boat, Stanley promised that one day, they would sail away from their home in New Jersey, away from all the bullies and hard times. He promised his brother that they would sail all across the world and look for treasure together. With that promise, Stanley and Stanford were motivated to fixing up their boat.

With the years that followed, Stanford kept his grades high and his intelligence shining. Sure, Stanley always had trouble with school, however, he had someone to 'help' him. Being in the same classes with Stanford often paid off for Stanley, only not as well as he had hoped. Stanley couldn't compete with his brother. He couldn't keep his grades as high as Stanford’s, unfortunately.

He wasn't as enthusiastic about school as his brother was. Yes, he was a bit jealous, but he never let it get to his head. Stanley didn't worry about what Stanford did. In fact, when Stanford was the one awarded for his science fair experiment of a perpetual motion machine, it was Stanley that was by his side to pat his brother’s back. He was proud of his brother and that was a fact. For that one moment, everything was right with the world. Their lives, their secretive boat project - everything was just fine.

Grunkle Stan sighed and rubbed his temples. “At least that’s what I thought. Until that one day.”

Stanford and Stanley sat by each other in class. While Stanley sat back and munched on a bag of toffee peanuts, Stanford was hard at work, as usual. The speaker buzzed and that’s when it all tumbled downhill. “Pines twins to the principal’s office. Pines twins to the principal’s office.” The lady’s voice blared. When they both arrived at the door, Stanley was asked to sit down while his brother continued on into the principal’s office.

As he entered, the pit of his stomach dropped at the sight of his parents. Though, Stanford was sure he hadn’t done anything wrong, he couldn’t help but think he had. The pit in his stomach grew bolder as he walked over to take a seat in between his parents and across from the principal. From behind the closed door, Stanley strived to listen in on their conversation. He was only able to make out bits and pieces.

"What are you saying?" Stanley heard his mother's muffled voice say. To him, the conversation didn't sound promising.

Back in the principal's office, the principal answered Shirley. “I'm saying you’re son, Stanford, is a genius! All of his teachers are going bananas over his science fair experiment!" The principal handed Stanford the West Coast Technology College pamphlet before going on. "Ya' ever heard of West Coast Tech? Best college in the country." Stanford gladly accepted the pamphlet, opening it up with a smile creeping on his face. "Their graduates turn science fiction into science fact. The admissions team is visiting tomorrow to check out Stanford’s experiment. Your son may be a future millionaire, Mr. Pines.”

By what Stanford had heard, the pit in his stomach had soon shrunk and subsided. Hearing the news of West Coast Tech made Stanford conquer his gut feeling. And for the first time ever, Filbrick was impressed.

Yes, it was true. Stanford was offered to get the chance to study at West Coast Tech College. It was the ‘best college in the country’. Stanford was on the edge of having all of his intelligence and backbreaking school work pay off. However, Shirley questioned it. “But what about our little free spirit, Stanley?” The principal tried to hold back a laugh and said, “That clown? At this rate, he’ll be lucky to graduate high school. Look, there’s a saltwater taffy store on the dock. And somebody’s gotta get paid to scrape the barnacles off of it. Stanford’s goin' places. But hey, look on the bright side: at least you’ll have one son in New Jersey forever.” With hearing that statement out loud, Stanley didn’t want to hear anything else. He slid his back up against the door and sat there, a slight, wavering frown growing on his face.

That day, after school, the pair of twin brothers sat on the swingset of Glass Shard Beach. Stanford told Stanley about West Coast Tech with a proud smile on his face. Stanley, being a good brother, listened to what he had to say. "Look, Stan. I can't pass up a chance like this. This school has cutting - edge programs and multidimensional paradigm theory."

"Beep boop. I am a nerd robot." Stanley said, imitating his brother's statement, acting like a robot. He pointed to Stanford, who sat in the swing next to him. "That's you. That's what you sound like." Stanley was able to make Stanford laugh, before his brother answered. "Well, if the college board isn't impressed with my experiment tomorrow, then, okay. I'll do the treasure hunting thing."

"And if they are?"

Aside from overhearing what the principal had to say about his little success in school and small possibility of graduating, the true difficulty for Stanley was accepting what Stanford said next. "Well then, I guess you better come visit me on the other side of the country." Stanford gave a playful nudge to his brother and laughed. Stanley forced a small smile, which didn't last long. Stanford got up out of his swing and left.

Stan told his side of the story, awkwardly making hand gestures along the way. “So, thanks to that dumb college, I was going to lose my brother forever."

Back to the past, Stanley was passing by his brother's science experiment while eating, yet, another bag of toffee peanuts. He couldn't help but think about what had happened earlier that day and before he knew it, he had cleaned the whole bag of his snack. His eyes moved up and found Stanford's perpetual motion machine eyeing him back. Stanley's anger flared and his face clenched together.

"This is all your fault, ya' dumb machine!" He couldn't keep his rage inside and pounded the table with his fist. Stanford's experiment shook, a piece coming unscrewed. Stanley felt his heart practically jump out of his chest. Despite the fact that the machine was smoking and the piece came unscrewed, the machine stayed persistently in motion. It spun and didn't fail. Still, Stanley was terrified. He had ruined his brother's project and possibly his chance to get into college.

He no longer felt mad, however, he now felt incredibly guilty and full of regret. "Oh, no. Oh, no. No! What did I do?!" His hands shook and trembled as he frantically pondered of what to do. Taking a risk, he reached his hand out to screw the piece back in place. Hoping the machine would be fine for the rest of the night, he continued to cover it up with a white sheet as if no one had touched it.

Stanford couldn't wait for the admissions team to come the following morning. He fixed his bow tie and stood up straight. He wanted to look professional for the judges. “Alright kid.” One of the judges said. “Show us what ya’ got.”

“Okay. Well, what if I told you that the future of technology was beneath this sheet.” Stanford pulled the white sheet off of his experiment with a full smile on his face. “I’d say, ‘we wasted a car trip’.” The judge responded.

“What?” Stanford did a double take at the sight of his machine. He went up to one of the balls of his project and found it to not be rotating. “But it was stable yesterday. A fuse must have blown or something.” As he talked, the judges didn’t hesitate. They crossed off Stanley’s name off of their list. “Kid, a perpetual motion machine has one job: to not stop. I don’t think you’re West Coast material.” All the judges turned to walk away and leave. “No, wait!” Stanford pleaded, trying to get them to reconsider. “Don’t go! I worked so hard!” Stanford took a couple of steps forward until he heard a plastic bag crinkling under his foot. It was an empty bag of toffee peanuts. Picking it up, Stanford knew Stanley had been here. He clenched the bag in anger. Stanley had ruined this for him.

Stanley was on the couch, playing with his paddleball when Stanford came home. "Hey, what's the word, Sixer?" Stanley exclaimed. Stanford's face showed Stanley’s greeting as a negative sign. He knew his brother was trying to cover up the guilt by acting innocent. To prove he meant business, Stanford held up the empty toffee peanuts bag as he blocked the light of the TV. "Can you explain what this was doing next to my broken project?" Stanley tried to play it off as 'horsing around,' but Stanford remained serious and non humored. He argued back saying, "This was no accident, Stan! You did this! You did this because you couldn't handle me going to college on my own!"

"Look, it was a mistake! Although, if you think about it, maybe there's a silver lining. Huh? Treasure hunting?"

Stanford stood there, in a state of disbelief. He was so overcome with distraught and speechlessness, he didn't know what to say about Stanley’s lame excuse. Stanley was only making the situation worse. He didn't really think that Stanford was going to go sailing across the world, treasure hunting with him now, did he?

Then, finally, Stanford spoke up. "Are you kidding me? Why would I want to do anything with the person who sabotaged my entire future?!" From there, the argument only got more intense and physical. Stanford's anger swelled up inside him, leading to him shoving his brother off his feet and onto the couch. That's when their father came into the room. He had overheard the whole event.

He took Stanley by the collar of his plain white shirt and tossed him out of the door. Along with Stanley, Filbrick threw his belongings in a duffel bag with him. "You ignoramus! Your brother was gonna be our ticket outta this dump! All you ever do is lie and cheat right on your brother's coattails. Well, this time, you cost our family potential millions! And until you make us a fortune, you aren't welcome in this household."

Stanford watched from his bedroom window as his own brother was kicked out of his own home. Stanley was banned from his own home until he became successful. Before Before he left, however, he attempted to reason with his brother. Looking up at Stanford in the open window, he said, "Stanford, tell him he's being crazy!" But, sadly, it was no use. Stanford ignored his own brother, shutting the curtains on him. Stanford thought this was right for Stanley. He thought that Stanley leaving his home would teach him a thing or two about the real world and hard work. As he lay against the wall next to the window, he heard his brother shout a vow. "Fine!" He proclaimed. "I can make make it on my own! I don't need you! I'd don't need anyone! I'll make millions and you'll rue the day you turned your back on me!" Stanley angrily got in his car and drove off. His careless and reckless driving skills caused him to take out two trash cans on the sidewalk before being able to turn around and get on the road. As he drove off, his face settled from its rage and turned heartbroken. He really was truly sorry. He didn't mean for any of this to happen. But, he had a plan to fix it. He had a plan to make money and come back home.
