"She's my best friend and I want to talk to her," I snapped at the two guards, who's gazes lingered on me for a moment until they shared a look. "Right now!"
This morning, there was a big fuss when a guard was desperately seeking medical attention. Clarke, of course, had been to investigate. When I saw her again in the hall, she'd mentioned that one of them had been covered in radiation burns, but they'd treated him and she saw him walking around like nothing had happened. Obviously, this raised both her suspicions and mine. She then left me to eat dinner in the dining hall, and the next thing I knew, she was in the medical ward, again.
"We can't let you to go there. Only patients are allowed in medical," one of the guards replied, causing me to roll my eyes in irritation. We'd been going back and forwards like this for the past few minutes, which only heightened my worries about my best friend, as well as my irritation.
My confrontation with the two guards had grabbed some attention, including Jasper's. "Come on," I heard my friend say softly. "Let's finish eating."
I shook him off, staring darkly at the two men before heading back towards the table. Jasper seemed to sigh in relief as the guards shared a satisfied look, until I grabbed the knife beside my plate.
"Woah! Billie-" Jasper started as I held it to my skin, turning back to the guards. There were some gasps in the room from people who'd watched the scenario unfold.
"Only patients are allowed in medical right? Well-"
"What seems to be the problem here?" An incredibly pretty woman wearing a lab coat cut me off, stopping beside the two guards. I completely froze still, watching as her cold eyes wandered to the knife pressed against my skin.
The guards stayed silent as I took in her appearance. She looked like a doctor or at least someone who had something to do with medical, so maybe she could get me to Clarke. "My best friend is in the medical room. I went to go and see her but I was stopped."
"You must be Billie," she said calmly. "My name is Lorelei Tsing, I'm head doctor here. Please put the knife back down."
"Only if I can go and see Clarke."
To my surprise, she nodded. "I'll take you to her. Now, put it down."
The room had fallen silent now and it felt like everyone's eyes were on me as I placed the knife back on the table. She nodded her head and I began to follow her down the hallway, glancing back at a slightly shocked Jasper once more before I turned the corner.
"That wasn't a good thing to try and do, Billie," I heard her say as I walked beside her, glancing around me. "I understand your need to see your friend but we would never encourage desperate acts like those to get what you want."
I didn't respond, coming to a stop next to her outside a door that read Medical Room. "Thanks-" I started, only for her to interject.
"We understand you've been through a lot. And after everything you've seen, you're going to be going through some things."
"Honestly, I really just want to see Clarke so-"
"Billie," she started, her tone seeming somewhat warmer. "It seems to me like you're suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder."
"Well, it wouldn't exactly take a genius to figure that out," I shot back, although she didn't exactly seem phased by my attitude. I didn't mean to be rude, I was just really, very desperate to see Clarke. "I'm pretty sure all of my people have been dealing with that on some level. Thanks for the concern."
"Your people haven't been attempting to harm themselves, Billie." Her words made my thoughts stop cold for a moment, and I felt my earlier demeanour fading. "If you would like to talk about it-"
"I don't want to talk to anyone," I snapped back, realising that maybe I shouldn't have been so harsh. "I'm sorry, it's just-"
"You're worried about your friend," she finished for me. "You can go in, she's just through that door." I reached for the handle, pausing when she spoke up again. "But I am concerned that you're avoiding your feelings, which I must tell you really isn't a good thing. I can't force you to talk, but if you change your mind, I'll be here."
"Um, thanks," I replied still slightly unsure about the woman. I opened the door, seeing Clarke sat on the edge of the bed, looking around the white room.
"Billie," she said as I shut the door behind me. "Why are you here?"
"Why are you here?" I shot back, glancing down at a stitched up wound on her arm. "Did you do that on purpose? Because of the radiation guy?"
Her eyes glanced past me to another bed. I turned around, seeing a man with tubes connected to his chest, something dark red being pumped into him. Blood?
"B, that's him," she said, causing me to become slightly freaked out. "He said he had another treatment to go."
Clarke stood up, heading over to the bed and gingerly bending over the guard, shaking his arm. "Langston," she hissed. "Hey, Langston."
"What the hell are they doing to him?" I questioned as I stopped beside her. Clarke had pulled down his hospital gown, her eyes now following the tube. I did the same, noticing it disappear up into a wall. The two of us followed it, leading us to a door, which wouldn't budge when we tried it.
"The vent," Clarke whispered as she noticed it on the wall. I stood back as she lifted herself up into it, watching as she crawled until her feet disappeared. After a moment of hesitation, I followed, slowing when I heard the sound of her choking. "Billie don't-"
"What-" I started, stopping in my tracks.
Two bodies were strung up by their ankles, tubes attached all over them, drawing out the same liquid that was being put into Langston. Their eyes were staring blankly ahead, setting me on edge.
"They're Grounders," Clarke practically whispered as pained groans sounded from behind us.
We both turned around at the same time, and my eyes widened at the horrific sight of hundreds of cages, each holding a Grounder. Clarke began to head down an isle of them and I reluctantly followed, ignoring the fingers poking out of the cages, skimming my skin and hair.
I could hardly bear to look at them. Their faces showed nothing but pain, and it made my stomach twist. They didn't deserve to be treated like that.
I noticed Clarke come to a stop and I did the same. Her gaze was on a cage at the bottom, and I began to recognise the Grounder being kept inside it.
"Anya."
Bile started to rise in my throat and I turned away, closing my eyes and claiming "I'm gonna be sick."
Whilst I tried my best to keep it together, I heard Clarke reassuring Anya. I took some deep breaths, feeling my body beginning to shake in fear. The whole time we were here, this was happening.
Is that what they were gonna do to us eventually?
"Billie," I heard Clarke say and I looked over, noticing her angling down a metal bar that she'd put in a lock. Without her having to ask, I came over, wrapping my hands around it and pulling it down. It took a few minutes but the lock eventually gave way.
I slid the lock off the cage as Clarke opened it up and started to help Anya up. In the distance, I heard a door open and shared a frantic look with Clarke. Thinking quickly, I closed the cage door with Clarke and Anya still in it, before scanning my eyes around and finding a hiding spot in a dark corner.
I heard the sound of heels clicking along the aisle floor and sucked in a deep breath, realising it was Dr Tsing. I watched in horror as she came closer to the cage with Clarke and Anya inside, and hoped to god she wouldn't recognise Clarke.
Suddenly, some of the Grounders above began shouting, their hands reaching out to grab Lorelei. Looking startled, she stumbled backwards, trying to smooth her hair out again as she turned back the way she came.
I let out a breath of relief, waiting a few moments after she'd gone before heading back to Clarke and Anya, who were crawling out of the cage.
"Come on," Clarke said as we both pulled Anya up, carrying her away from the cages. We headed past some double doors, which ended up being a dead end. Frustrated, I began to turn back around when an alarm sounded around us.
"You're kidding me," I hissed, looking around for some kind of way out.
"What is that?" Anya questioned, staring at the flashing lights.
"I don't-" Before Clarke could finish, the floor underneath our feet suddenly disappeared, leaving nothing but air for a moment, until I landed on a hard, metal surface. I slammed down my hands beside me, trying to stop myself from falling down whatever it was, but there was no use.
I landed on top of a body, thinking it was Clarke and going to apologise until I noticed the lifeless eyes and realised it wasn't.
"Oh my god!" I shouted, scrambling away, pressing my hand over my mouth. I noticed Clarke and Anya glancing around with similar expressions to me. It looked like this was how they disposed of the Grounder bodies.
I began to climb out of the cart, along with Clarke who helped Anya out. My best friend had appeared to notice something in the distance, and I eventually realised it was a pile of clothes.
Clarke began to change out of her hospital gown before turning to Anya. "Get dressed," she instructed. "We can't cover any ground like this."
"I won't leave my people behind."
Clarke sighed almost impatiently. "Anya, now, listen to me. My people are still inside that place too, but they have guards. They have weapons. Once we get out of here, we can find help. We can come back."
"There is no we," Anya sneered, glaring at Clarke with her jaw clenched tightly.
There was an obnoxious shout and the sound of crazed laughter from the end of the tunnel and I turned in the direction of it, my heart racing. "Someone's coming."
"Not just someone, Reapers."
I was fully prepared to leg it down the tunnel but Anya began searching for something, causing me to watch in confusion as Clarke tried to stop her.
"Anya, you can't fight," Clarke said, attempting to pull her away. "You can hardly stand." Her desperate eyes met mine as we both glanced around, until my eyes landed on the cart.
"I've got a better idea," I said, beginning to climb back into it, doing my best to push my thoughts away. I waved Clarke and Anya over. "Come on!"
The two of them climbed in, Clarke close beside me as we shared worried looks. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to keep myself calm.
Another body landed in the cart and I bit down hard on my lip so that I didn't scream. Instinctively, I grabbed on to Clarke's arm, holding it tightly as I tried not to freak out when even more bodies were thrown in.
It took a while for it all to stop, and when it eventually did we had to stay there for a few minutes longer just to be safe.
Clarke sat up first, giving me the all clear. I pushed the bodies away from me, glancing over at Anya who was holding a Grounder's head between her hands.
"Anya," Clarke hissed, earning a harsh glare from the woman. "What are you doing?"
Anya muttered something I couldn't understand, before snapping the man's neck, making me flinch slightly. Slightly unnerved, I climbed out of the cart, Clarke and I both keeping an eye out whilst Anya got changed.
We began walking again, but it didn't take long to realise we were completely lost.
"Damn it. This place is a maze," Clarke commented as I glanced around. She was right, everything looked exactly the same.
"What are they doing to us?"
"They use your blood," I answered Anya as Clarke seemed to try and figure a way out.
"I saw a soldier come in with radiation burns," my friend then replied. "Hours later, he was fine. It's like your blood is healing them somehow. I've never seen anything like it."
I looked ahead, spotting another tunnel whilst Clarke was explaining. "This way," I said once she'd finished, but Anya began heading in the opposite direction.
"Hey. Hey. What are you doing?" Clarke questioned in confusion. "That's the way back to the Reapers."
"You go your way," the woman replied, turning to walk away again. "I'll go mine."
I watched in bewilderment as Clarke pulled her back again. "Anya, we need to stick together."
"I told you there is no we."
"I saved your life," Clarke pointed out.
"You saved my life because you need me," Anya bit back sharply. "I know the way back to your people. I know where the traps are hidden. You two would never make it alone."
"We don't have time for this," I said, taking another glance around again, feeling slightly paranoid.
"Our best chance of making it out of here alive is together. All we can do is keep moving and hope-" Clarke cut off and I turned back around, realising Anya had gone.
"What the–"
"Anya?" Clarke asked, just as there was a loud shout from nearby, signalling that the reapers were nearby again. "Anya?"
"Come on," I grabbed Clarke's hand, wanting to get the hell out of here. "She made her choice!" I yelled, beginning to drag her to the only tunnel that wasn't blocked by reapers.
Clarke eventually gave in, breaking into a run beside me before halting, both of us realising we were trapped. The two of us shrank back against the wall and I squeezed Clarke's hand tightly, absolutely terrified of what was going to happen. My eyes flitted around desperately as I tried to think of a way out but I just couldn't.
Unexpectedly, there was a loud high-pitched sound from the end of the tunnel. My hands flew to cover my ears, as I watched the reapers shrink away, yelling in pain.
"Get away from them!" A man shouted, and I recognised their suits to be those of the Mountain Men. The reapers disappeared as the men approached us both, causing me to sigh in annoyance. It was beginning to look like we were never going to leave this place. "Clarke Griffin, Billie Raylee, you're coming with us."
They began to restrain us both, despite our best efforts to fight. Two mountain men grabbed me tightly, causing me to curse in pain. They pushed Clarke and I back in the direction of Mount Weather, their grips tightening.
"I saw everything," Clarke hissed. "I know what you're doing to them!"
"That's why you're going in the harvest chamber with them."
My skin crawled as I looked at Clarke, my eyes beginning to fill with tears. "Alpha-Delta Two, we've reached the intake," the man said once we reached the doors of Mount Weather again. "Two prisoners in custody."
"Your mission was to bring back the three of them. The outsider cannot be allowed to leave this mountain. Alpha-Delta One is coming out now."
A loud scream pierced the air and I looked over to see Anya literally flying through the air, lunging at one of the guards holding me, giving me a chance to break free. Quickly, I pushed the other guard away, slamming him hard against the wall.
I glanced over to see Clarke ripping the mask of one of the guard's faces, causing his face to begin to burn. I followed her lead, pulling off the man's mask and letting go of him as he sunk to the floor in pain.
"I found a way out!" Anya called out from behind us. "This way!"
We began running, Clarke only stopping momentarily to pick up a gun from the floor. The doors dinged open, signalling that Alpha Delta One was likely just behind us.
I picked up the pace, rounding the corner to be met with a blinding light which immediately started to make my head ache. Once I began to see clearly, I realised it was an opening in the mountain.
We were free.
"Wait!" Clarke held her arm out and I halted, hearing the roaring sounds of water. The exit wasn't on the ground. It was over a large waterfall. "There has to be another way!"
"There isn't!" Anya said as my stomach churned. I'd never swam before, and the thought terrified me.
I glanced back at the waterfall again before turning back to the Mountain Men. If I went back, I was guaranteed to die. If I jumped, at least I'd be free. At least I'd die trying.
And as terrifying as it was, I'd rather die like that than go back to the mountain.
"Just give up," one of the men spoke, his weapon trained on all of us. "You have no place else to go."
Anya didn't even bother wait any longer and jumped from the ledge. "Anya!" Clarke and I both screamed, lurching forwards. I watched her fall, eventually fading into a small dot before disappearing completely.
I ran my hands through my hair, panic settling within me.
"We don't have to kill you," the man said. "It doesn't have to end like this."
I glanced at Clarke, swallowing my fear as I stepped towards the edge. I couldn't go back. I wouldn't. "Billie-" she started.
"It's the only way."
And, taking a deep breath, I jumped.
A scream left my mouth as I descended down, the pressure building in my ears as I was sprayed by the water. My heart felt like it had plummeted to my stomach as the blue mist began to come closer and closer.
The air was removed from my lungs as I crashed into the water, which slammed harshly against me. I thrashed my arms around, trying to get up to the surface. My head felt like it was about to explode as I opened my stinging eyes. I could see the surface just above me, I was almost there. Dots began to cloud my vision as the current swept me under again, causing me to involuntarily suck in a breath.
The pressure on my head was finally released. But everything gradually began to fade.
