08| Radio
"Hey," I smiled, nudging Octavia as I looked up at the dark black sky. There was a bright light streaming across and it looked absolutely beautiful. "It looks like a shooting star."
Octavia lifted her head up but I noticed her eyes widen in alarm. "That's not a shooting star."
"What?"
Octavia got to her feet and I immediately jumped up after her, following her to the outside of Bellamy's tent.
"Bellamy, get up! Bellamy get out here!" Octavia yelled.
I stood beside her, staring up at the sky where a single pod was speeding down to earth. There was an orange and yellow glow around it from the speed it was descending through the atmosphere. It definitely was not a shooting star.
"There!" I heard Octavia exclaim as she pointed at the sky. Bellamy walked over, as did a whole other group of people.
"They're coming to help us!" Someone proclaimed excitedly. "Now we can kick some grounder ass!"
"Please tell me they brought down some shampoo," A random girl muttered, a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.
After the excitement, Octavia and I began to calm everyone down whilst Bellamy took refuge in his tent.
Finn and Clarke were nowhere in sight. Part of me knew they were okay - especially if they were together. It didn't stop me from being worried though. So whilst Octavia went to speak to Bellamy, I sat and kept a look out for Clarke and Finn. I don't know how long I waited but after a while, I was restless and wanted to know what was actually going on. As I stood up, I spotted Bellamy leaving his tent again so quickly jogged to catch up with him.
"Bellamy!" I yelled. He must have heard me but he didn't both to turn around, which only irritated me further. "Hey!" I reached him, causing him to sigh.
"What do you want?" He asked with an exasperated tone.
"Where are you going?" He didn't answer and I knew what that meant. "You're going to find the pod, aren't you?"
He groaned, running his hand through his dark and already messy hair. "Why do you always have to get in people's business?" He snapped, lowering his voice.
"Don't be a dick, Bellamy," I rolled my eyes. "Are you going to the pod? I thought you said-"
"I know what I said."
I frowned, confusion setting over me. Why was Bellamy so eager to get there? Every sign that there was to help us make contact with the Ark, he was always against it. It was like he'd been hiding something for a long time that I just couldn't figure it out.
Why wouldn't he want the Ark down here? Unless he did something back then.
"You did something," I spoke up. "On the ark. Didn't you?"
"Just go back to camp, Billie," He started to turn around but I stood my ground.
"No. Tell me what you did."
"I didn't do anything," He said firmly.
"Then why are you so hell-bent on getting to that pod before everyone else?" I countered.
"Bellamy!" The two of us looked over to see Octavia running through the trees towards us. "Billie?" She came to a stop, trying to catch her breath. "What are you doing?"
"Go back to camp," Bellamy ordered. "It isn't safe."
"You lied to everyone," She said, her lip curling in disgust. "You lied to me. You just want whatever's in that pod."
"Just go home!" He shoved her shoulder and she stumbled backwards slightly.
"Hey-" I went to intervene but Octavia cut me off.
"You always want to play the big brother, huh?" She stepped towards him again. "Well, guess what? Joke's on me. You're just a selfish dick."
"I did this for you, to protect you!" He defended. "Look, if the Ark finds out we're alive, they'll come down. And when they do I'm dead."
"What did you do?"
"I shot him," Bellamy finally replied. "I shot Jaha."
Octavia' jaw dropped in disbelief. "What?"
I shook my head, not believing what had just come out of Bellamy's mouth. Did he honestly shoot the chancellor?
"I found out they were sending you to Earth," He told Octavia. "I couldn't let you go alone," He paused, shaking his head. "Someone came to me with a deal. Do this. Kill him, and they'd get me on the dropship. And I did it."
"You killed the chancellor?" She gasped.
"He floated our mother," Bellamy's eyes were full of pain as he spoke and I started to get a better understanding of why he did it. "He locked you up. He deserved it."
"I didn't ask you to do that." Octavia pointed out.
Bellamy licked his lips, nodding. "You're right. I made the choice. This is on me. Whatever they sent down, I'll take care of it." He turned away from her.
I glanced over at Octavia, who was looking at her brother like she didn't even know him anymore. "I didn't ask for any of this." She ran off without another word.
Bellamy looked down at the ground, avoiding my gaze. I placed my hand on his shoulder comfortingly. I hated to watch the two of them fight. I hated the look in their eyes. It pained me to watch that.
"Hey, Bellamy-"
He shook his head, cutting me off. "Just go back to camp."
"Let me come with you."
"Go back to camp, Billie." His voice was emotionless now and I felt my body stiffen.
"I don't want you to go on your own." It's true, I didn't. The grounders were still a threat. And even though I knew he could take care of himself, I didn't want him to go alone. I also didn't want him to go through with whatever he was planning. If there was a way of communicating the Ark in the pod and he planned on destroying it, I had to stop him. If I let him go alone, I can only hope and pray that someone else gets there first. But I can't keep going through life with just hopes and prayers. Things need to be done in order to survive.
Bellamy let out a groan of frustration. "I don't need you to come with me!"
"Bellamy," I stepped forwards. "Please."
"Haven't you already done enough," He snapped, which made me pause on the spot. That stung. That really hurt.
"Oh, I see. Pin the blame on me. You're just so-"
"Look," He sighed, cutting me off. "If I let you come with me, will you shut up."
"Yes."
~
"Whoever it is, they're hurt," I told Bellamy as I looked at the person in the spacesuit. Their chest was still rising and falling, so I knew they were alive. But there was blood all over the helmet, which wasn't a good sign.
"Can you see the radio?" Was his reply.
I glanced around, noticing it on the floor of the pod. "Um, give me a second," I quickly grabbed the radio and placed it through my belt, covering it up with my jacket. "I can't see anything here."
Bellamy groaned. "Let me have a look."
I moved away and let him step into the pod. After a few minutes of rummaging around, he came out again, looking infuriated. "How can there be no radio?"
I shrugged. "Maybe someone else got here first. Maybe it was Clarke."
"She wouldn't have left without taking care of that." He indicated to the still unconscious person in the pod.
"I don't know. Maybe grounders then? Does it matter? Look, we've got to help-"
"There's no tracks," Bellamy pointed out.
"Okay, maybe-" I sighed. "Maybe there was no radio." He gave me a look and I knew I'd been busted. "Damn nothing gets past you, does it?"
"I can see it underneath your jacket. Hand it over, Billie."
My heart raced. How the hell was I going to get out of this?
"Bellamy. Just wait a moment. The Ark-" I saw him roll his eyes. "We need to get in contact. We need to tell them-"
"If they come down here, I'm dead!" He shouted.
"I won't let that happen." I promised, and I intended to keep it. If the Ark did come down, I wouldn't let them do anything to Bellamy.
"Give me the radio," He demanded.
I took a step backwards. "No."
He repeated his next words very slowly. "Give me the radio."
I narrowed my eyes at him challengingly. "Come and get it."
As soon as I started running, I knew it was a bad decision. I mean, what was I thinking? I'd be able to run all the way back to camp? Of course I wouldn't. My legs were working faster than they ever had before, and before long I was nearing the river. Quickly, I steered towards the forest, but Bellamy grabbed my arm, stopping me from going anywhere. I held the device behind me, stepping backwards so that he couldn't reach it.
"Billie, just give me the radio."
I shrugged out of his grip, still backing away from him. "Can you just trust me on this one thing. I won't let anything happen to you. Just let me take the radio back to-"
Bellamy suddenly grabbed my wrist and my hand twisted at an awkward angle, letting the radio fall to the ground. Before I could reach down, Bellamy had snagged it and was jogging closer to the river. I scrambled up, nearing him just as he launched the radio into the water.
My jaw dropped as I realised what had happened. Rage burned through my body as I stormed over to him. "You idiot!" I slammed my hands against his chest, pushing him backwards. "This was our one chance!"
"I had to!" He defended.
I shook my head. "No you didn't. You really didn't."
"Billie-"
"Don't." I stepped away from him, shaking my head in complete disappointment. Why did I expect anything other than this to happen? "I hate you." I stormed off into the forest, my eyes hazy with frustrated tears.
I soon felt someone tug on my wrists, spinning me back around. "Billie-"
"Don't touch me." I ripped my hands from his grip. "Stay away from me."
"Did I hurt you?"
"Like you care!"
"You don't even know the way back." He pointed out, but I wasn't bothered.
"I don't care!" I continued to walk off, not wanting to spend another second near him.
"Billie-"
"Leave me alone!"
"Hey!" I paused upon hearing Clarke's voice. She ran over to Bellamy, looking between the two of us. "Where is it?" She demanded.
"Hey, princess. You taking a walk in the woods?"
Clarke scoffed. "They're getting ready to kill to save oxygen. And I can guarantee you it won't be council members. It'll be working people," She jabbed a finger at his chest. "Your people."
"Bellamy," Finn suddenly pushed him backwards. "Where's the radio?"
Bellamy pushed Finn in response."I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Clarke, I tried to stop him-" I started but another girl cut me off.
"Bellamy Blake?" She eyed him. "They're looking everywhere for you."
"Shut up," He snapped.
"Looking for him why?" Clarke asked, her eyebrows drawing together in confusion.
"He shot Chancellor Jaha," I replied, earning a glare from Bellamy.
Realisation set on Clarke's face. "That's why you took the wristbands. Needed everyone to think we're dead."
"And all that 'whatever the hell we want'?" Finn shook his head. "You just care about saving your own skin."
Bellamy ignored them, walking off.
"Hey! Shooter!" The girl called, catching up to him. "Where's my radio?"
"Get out of my way."
She stopped in front of him. "Where is it?"
"I should've killed you when I had the chance," He sneered.
"Really? Well, I'm right here." He grabbed her jacket, spinning her around and pressing her to a tree, his hand around her throat. But she held up a knife, threatening him. "Where's my radio?" She repeated. And I must admit, the girl had guts.
"Ok, stop it," Clarke said, looking between the two of them.
"Jaha deserved to die. You all know that," Bellamy said as he turned away from us.
"Yeah, he's not my favourite person either," Space girl said. "But he isn't dead."
Bellamy turned back around. "What?"
"You're a lousy shot."
"Bellamy, don't you see what this means?" Clarke asked as she walked over to him. "You're not a murderer. You always did what you had to do to protect your sister. That's who you are. And you can do it again, by protecting 300 of your people," She took a deep breath. "Where's the radio?"
I let out a long sigh. "It's too late."
The girl turned to me harshly. "What do you mean it's too late."
I glanced at Bellamy, who's face was unreadable, before continuing. "He threw it in the river."
"And you just let him?" Finn frowned, folding his arms as he watched me.
"She didn't exactly go down without a fight." Bellamy grumbled in my defence.
I turned to face Clarke, my eyes filling with unwanted tears. "I tried. I really did."
"Yeah, well you didn't try hard enough." Space girl snapped.
Clarke didn't exactly have a readable expression on her face either as she looked at Bellamy and I. "Lead the way."
~
"Can you fix it?" I asked the girl, who's name I now knew as Raven, after we located the radio.
"Maybe." She replied with a deflated sigh. "But it will take half a day just to dry out the components to see what's broken."
"Like Billie said, it's too late." Bellamy stated.
Clarke harshly stepped towards him. "Do you have any idea what you did? Do you even care?"
"You asked me to help," He said. "I helped."
"Three hundred people are going to die today because of you."
"Hold up," Raven cut in. "We don't have to talk to the Ark. We just have to let them know we're down here, right?"
"Yeah, but how do we do that with no radio?" Finn frowned. I was also confused. I mean, sure we could send a signal but how could we guarantee it would reach them.
Raven merely smiled in response. And shortly afterwards, we were bringing tools, and all sorts of things I didn't know names for, out from the pod.
"We need to launch those flares ASAP if we have any hope of saving those people," Raven called out. "Finn, get that control panel to camp," She ordered. "You, pull out those firing circuits in one piece or they won't work," She instructed another boy. "Clarke and Billie, can I have a hand?" The two of us headed over and Raven handed Clarke a spanner. "Work these bolts here gently. Rocket fuel likes to go boom," Clarke carefully started twisting the spanner on the bolts as Raven turned to face me. "I'm sorry for snapping at you before."
"It's okay, I get it."
She smiled and nodded, addressing both Clarke and I. "Look, we're going to need power to fire."
"They're tying in the batteries on the dropship. Should be ready when we get there," Clarke informed.
"Great. So, what's the problem?"
"Nothing." Clarke lied. Raven and I both gave her a look. Something was definitely up and had been for a while. I must admit, I was slightly upset that she hadn't confided in me. We're best friends- or supposed to be. "I just- well, if we get the rockets to launch, will they see them from the Ark?"
"Like the good book says, it's all about burn time and cloud cover. But I know your mom will be watching," She smiled reassuringly at Clarke and then looked over at me. "Yours too Billie."
"What?"
"Both of your moms aided me in getting down here. I've never seen anyone love someone the way they love you two. You know that, right?"
"I did," Clarke said. I frowned. What was that supposed to mean? What have I missed? Noticing our expressions, Clarke quickly added, "It's complicated."
I wasn't having it though. I needed to know what was going on. So after we had helped Raven out with the bolts, I pulled Clarke away. "What's going on?"
"What do you mean?"
"I haven't spoken to you properly in days," I said. "Not since everything with Wells. And what's this thing with you and your mom?"
"I've been busy. So have you," She pointed out.
"I get that, I do," I told her. "But I'm missing something here. Why are you acting so different?"
"You really wanna know?"
"Yeah, I do."
"Wells didn't turn our fathers in," She admitted with a sigh. "It was my mother."
I frowned, completely and utterly puzzled. Why would Abby turn her own husband in? That didn't make any sense. "What?"
"Wells tried to cover it up for her," I saw tears form in her eyes. "I blamed him when all he was trying to do was protect me from the truth." A small sob escaped her lips and she turned away from me, trying desperately to avoid my gaze.
"Clarke-" I started, completely crestfallen.
"No, no. Please don't," She tried to blink back tears. "And then the other day, my best friend left me and went off with Bellamy Blake to go hunting? Billie, you don't even know how to use a knife."
"Tell me about it," I mumbled.
"It's like you completely switched sides the whole day. And you didn't say a word to me afterwards. How do you think I felt?"
"I'm not on anyone's side, Clarke. There shouldn't even be sides," I stated firmly. "And if you wanna talk about feelings then think about what you've been doing to me. We're supposed to be best friends but, Christ, I hardly see you anymore. You're too busy with Finn! I mean what even is the deal between you two?"
"We slept together," She replied bluntly, causing my eyes to widen. "And then I found out he had a girlfriend back on the Ark."
I let out an exasperated breath. "Who?" She past my shoulder and I turned around, realising she was staring directly at Raven. "Really? Him and Raven?"
"Yeah."
"Clarke, I'm so sorry."
"It doesn't matter anyway."
"Yes it does. He shouldn't have led you on like that."
"It's done now," She sighed. "I just want to focus on getting this sorted. We need to contact the Ark."
"I know," I said, still feeling slightly guilty that I hadn't managed to save that damn radio.
"Thank you for trying today."
"Huh?" I bit my lip in confusion, unsure on how to take her words. Everybody seemed so mad at me earlier and rightly so. I shouldn't be complimented for failing to do something. What happens if we can't contact the Ark? That's not just on Bellamy, but it's on me too.
"Even if you didn't manage to stop Bellamy, you still tried," She smiled. "I'm lucky to have a best friend as brave as you."
"Brave? I wouldn't go that far," I chuckled. Truth is, I'm not brave. I've been scared ever since we got down here. But I tried to get on with things, for the benefit of others. Truthfully, I wouldn't have been able to do this without Clarke though. Her fire lights mine, that's why I've always admired her so much.
"You risked your whole friendship with Bellamy to try and save three hundred people," She reminded. "That's brave."
"I wouldn't go as far as saying friendship either," I grumbled, remembering mine and Bellamy's argument from earlier.
"It doesn't matter. I'm still proud of you."
And suddenly, it felt like all the bad things that had happened today, were good again. Clarke's words literally warmed my heart. And I was glad to have my best friend back. I was lucky to have her too. I needed her, I really did.
The two of us exchanged smiles, before I spoke up. "I'm proud of you too."
