Chapter 13
Oliver staggered along the narrow track. The same tall walls of green one each side that he saw two hours ago, and two hours before that.
Oliver had hardly slept last night, worried he might lay down then forget which direction he was going and start walking back the way he came. Everything looked the same after all.
A clicking bug flew across his path as he began a upwards slope over one of the many small hills on the path.
Oliver couldn't wait to find the graves, get some kind of proof and return, proving his uncle wasn't a liar. He couldn't wait to see the look on his friends faces when he returns as well, after they turned their back on him.
If he strained his ears he could hear the running water of a river of to the left. But then his ears caught something else, a sort of clip-clipping noise.
'Great!' Oliver thought, 'I can catch a lift.'
But then then a part of him made him paranoid, what if his friends snitched on him? What if they reported him running away? Oliver grew angry, 'How could they?! The backstabbing bastards! They reported me, the authorities are coming to get me!'
Convincing himself of his friends betrayal, he dove into the bushes, successfully scraping his knee and scratching himself on lantana.
But as he hid he became unsure. His friends wouldn't do that would they? But then again, they may have been worried about him... What if it's them?
Cautiously he peeked out, parting the grass. The cart was approaching rather slowly and was about fifteen metres away. He heard some words in an annoying voice which sounded a lot like... Davis? Oliver squinted his eye and surely enough, he saw the four bobbing heads of Davis, Ava, Breece and some old man up the front. Oliver wondered for a second where Linda was before he grabbed his sack of essentials and jumped onto the tiny road, about five metres in front of two multi coloured horses.
"Whoa!" the old man yanked on the reins, pulling the horses to a stop, "What is with all these people on the track today?!"
"People?" Linda popped her head up from the cart. Ahh, there she was, lying down. Oliver smiled.
"Oliver?"
"Yup that's me."
"Oliver!"
Oliver grinned at his friends and crossed his arms over his chest as they climbed out of the stationary cart, "So you decided to follow me? Knew you couldn't stay away."
Ava snorted, "Yeah, cos someone has to stop you from getting yourself killed."
"How very thoughtful."
Davis jumped down out of the cart and slapped Oliver on the back of the head, he then turned around, climbed back onto the cart, smiled, then said nothing.
Someone cleared their throat. everyone turned to Billy who was looking confused, "This is all great and everything... But what's going on?"
