When I read this part in the book my reaction was:
1. Re-read it.
2. Re-re-read it.
3. Close the book slowly.
4. Scream.
5. Open book up. Check to see if I misread it.
6. I didn't misread it.
7. Scream.
8. Curl up in a ball on my bed, thinking about the horror I had just read.
9. Force myself to finish the book.
