Life after death

Mum was buried the next Sunday.  The funeral was pretty sad.  I cried a lot, but Grandma squeezed me hard when we were in church and stroked my hair again.  We sang songs, prayed and then the coffin was taken away.  Grandma told me that the coffin is now being burned.  I had to cry even more.  And then the next day, the ashes were placed in a golden bucket in Harry Smith's great tomb.  The name Doreen Smith now stood on the stone there.  I thought it was good that she was put in the grave with her father.

The time after that was terrible.  Spring vacation was exactly four days away and I still had no place in any school.
"Grandma, I have to go to school in four days.  Where should I go there? "I asked Grandma a few days later.
"Oh Mds, you know, I have a surprise for you."
"And that would be?"
"There's a place in high school!"
"No right?  - you are not serious grandma!  I've never been to high school!  I always went to lower school with us in the village!  But how did you get space there? "
"I called right on the first day you came, you were already in bed.  And they said there are still plenty of places.  You should just come on the first day of school after the holidays and we will take care of the rest the next week, with registration forms and so on. "
I was so happy that I got up and hugged my grandma.  I really hugged her.  Grandma pulled me to her lap and I put my head on your chest.
"What should we have lunch today, my dear?"
"Hm, I heard from one of my old class that there is a meal called pancakes.  It's supposed to be totally delicious, with jam or apple sauce. "
"That's right Mds, I even have old milk, we could really make pancakes.  But I probably would have done some anyway. "
I and grandma went to the kitchen.  Grandma got all the ingredients and I was allowed to stir the dough out of eggs, flour and milk and a pinch of sugar.  Then Grandma made the pancakes.  They looked like little doilies for vases or something, made of dough.  I set the table.
"What do you want to drink for dinner, my dear?"
"Juice, grandma."
"Okay, my love.  Apple, grape or berry multifruit? "
"Oh god - uh - apple."
"OK."
Grandma came back with a bottle of juice and a large plate of pancakes
"Do you still get the jam, I'll get the apple sauce."
"Yes."
I got the jam and grandma the apple sauce.  Then we sat down at the table.  Grandma told me to spread jam on my pancake and then roll it up and eat it.  I took the rolled up pancake and tried it once - it tasted really delicious somehow.  I licked the jam from the corner of my mouth and took a long swig of juice.
"Grandma, I don't have parents now, so I'm an orphan.  Do you live in an orphanage? "
"That's not entirely true - you're not an orphan!"
"I'm not an orphan !!  But I have no relatives anymore!?! "
"Yes, of course you have relatives!  Think of me!  I am your only relative - but if you add my sisters, there are more. "
"For real???  Oh how nice!!!  Then I never have to go to an orphanage as long as you live? "
"No of course not!  And if I weren't, you'd probably go to one of my sisters. "
"Do your sisters have grandchildren too?"
"Yes, my younger sister Sandy has four children and seven grandchildren, and my older sister Jean has a son, but unfortunately no grandchildren."
"Granny?"
"Yes?"
"You?"
"What?"
"I don't like the name Mds."
"Hm, you know what, neither do I - I think you should be given a different name.  Do you want that?  Then I find one that suits you? "
"Yes!"
"I can do that now that your mom is no longer alive.  And I can now decide about you, or well, I'm actually more responsible for you, you can determine a lot yourself. "
"For real??  Where am I supposed to sleep when I move in with you now?  I don't like the guest room and it's probably too narrow for you. "
"Come with me, I'll show you something."
"What??"
"Surprise!!"
Grandma went up the stairs to the first floor, past the bathroom and bedroom and also the guest room to the small gallery.  There, at the very beginning of the gallery, next to the large guest room on the right, she stopped.  There was a wall, but somehow it wasn't a wall.  Grandma took the wall aside and a door appeared.  Grandma opened it and went into a room.  There was a bed, a chest of drawers, a desk and a small closet.  The bed was covered with teddy bear sheets and it looked as if someone had lived here before.
"What is this room, grandma?"
"My dear, is your mom's old room.  I know I pushed a piece of wall in front of the door so that nobody knows when he comes that there is still a room because I and your mom, we were arguing.  And I just didn't want to think about her anymore - so I locked the room. "
"And can I move in there now?"
"If you like."
"But of course - thanks grandma !!"
"You don't have to thank me.  I loved doing that. "
I hugged my grandma very badly.  Grandma sank onto the bed with the teddy bear sheets and I put my head on her chest.
"I got the bed for my 20th birthday.  I remember it was my bed for years.  After that I had a double bed and your mom could have it.  And now you get it. And the closet too.  It's from my sister's Sandy and the chest of drawers for Jean's first husband.  Harry once bought the desk at an auction and your mom got the bed sheets for Christmas when she turned two. "
Grandma told me a lot about the past.  Then she puts her head a little more on the pillow, took the blanket, covered herself and me and fell asleep.  I snuggled up to her body and fell asleep.

Marga's point of view
When I woke up the next morning, I found myself in my old bed with Mds.  I turned to Mds and stroked her hair, slowly waking up.
"Hey Mds, did you sleep well?"
"Yes grandma, may I please continue sleeping."
"But of course you can, I'll go down to the kitchen to make breakfast."
"OK."
I went downstairs, Mds put her head back on the pillow and fell asleep.
The leftovers from yesterday's noon still stood in the kitchen below.  I cleared everything, washed the dishes, and re-stocked.  For breakfast I made eggs, ham, baked beans, toast and hot chocolate.
Meanwhile, I was thinking all the time what Mds is actually called when she doesn't want to be called Mds anymore - maybe Margaret or Evangeline or Evie, yes Evie would actually be nice, but somehow doesn't suit her, hmmmmmmmm ... I know what  !  That would be a good fit - and I left it at that.

Mds point of view
I woke up to the jingling of plates and cups and the sound of a frying pan.  This is definitely grandma.  I turned back and forth a few times in bed and then got up.  I had my clothes from yesterday on so no problem, already put on.  I quickly changed my socks and combed my hair.
"Addelin!  Breakfast!"
Addelin?  Did I just hear right?  My name is Addelin now I think how cool!
"I'm coming to Grandma."
I tied my hair into a loose bun and went down to the kitchen.
Grandma was already waiting for breakfast in the kitchen.
"Sit down my love, look I made you hot chocolate."
"Thank you, grandma."
I got up and hugged my grandma as hard as I could.  Then I sat down, sipped my cup and started eating.
"Grandma, I love the name Addelin, it is beautiful, much better than my old one."
"That's right, my love, I love in too."
"Do you like me grandma?"
"Yes, of course, I even love you!  I wouldn't give you up for anything, "said Grandma and smiled at me. There was a little bit of crying. I quickly took my cup, pretended to drink and covered my face with it. But Grandma had already seen it. Hurry up  she opened it, ran around the table to my chair and hugged me very badly, so that I could hardly breathe. When she broke away I looked into my grandma's crying face. She cried a little and finally said.
"Addelin, do you like me too?"
"Yes."

Hullo, this is the new chapter, a little short, I know, but it doesn't matter.  Hopefully the next chapter will be a little longer.  So have fun reading.
