Welcome to Wattpad Malaysia!! So good to have you here and be a part of welcoming you. My name is tamoja and I'd like to introduce you to an offshoot branch of Wattpad called Tap. Tap is an app owned by Wattpad that is short to medium sized stories told through text. When you read a Tap story it's like a glimpse into someone else's conversation. They're usually bite sized 2-6 minute reads that go anywhere your phone does and come in every genre.

The app is called Tap because you tap on your screen for each new line of text which helps you stay engaged and control the pace of the story. There's 2 options for Tap- free: which gives you a limited number of Taps on a storyline then makes you wait a certain amount of time for more taps to load. And premium: which is a monthly or yearly fee for unlimited taps. (Think all the stories all the time!).

Writing Tap stories is a challenge because you have to engage and keep the reader tapping and get the whole story in with a limited amount of space and time. But if done right, it's the best part of the story- the "meat and potatoes" and can really be amazing when you pull it off as a reader and a writer.

Logging on to the app you'll see a section of pre-picked stories. The ones on top are called Tap Originals - they are usually stories that have been purchased or assigned to people Tap uses to write stories and under that are stories the Tap team are highlighting.

If you click to the right you search genres like romance, funny, sci-fi, and of course, scary! Each category has tons of stories that you can choose from and it's easy to scroll through them and see that every one of them is unique. Once you've read a story it moves itself to the bottom so you don't have to scroll through all the lines you've already read to find another! (Genius right?)

The people who run the app work hard to make sure that categorizing the stories and giving fresh new content happens frequently. As a newer app, there are always improvements and changes as they find out what works and what doesn't.

Writing for Tap is fun and easy. You make your profile and the first thing you see says "create a story". Then you just assign your characters and fill in the boxes with what your characters say. It's important to remember that it isn't what we think of as 'natural storytelling'- it works as characters texting each other so no one is narrating or setting up scenes unless it's coming straight from one character to another. That adds a layer of challenge to the storyteller - you have to make sure the reader still "feels" like they aren't just spying on someone's texts- they still want the pulse of the story driving them further with great plot lines and really strong characters.

Speaking of characters, you can have a single character or multiple all texting each other when you create one --and the colors and names of the text boxes make it easy to keep them separate.

There are new things coming to Tap every day. Stories now can contain audio messages, Snapchat interruptions, choose your own endings, and pictures. It's a progressive app that's constantly on the move with bringing in new ways to make your story immersive to the reader.

It was incredible to be a part of the very first Watty winners, and as great as all the winning stories are, the new stuff just keeps getting better because of how much the app has grown. Personally, I love seeing new stories and reading a Tap story on a break or while waiting in line is the perfect distraction for me. It's possible to just hold down the Tap button and let the boxes switch every few seconds, but I enjoy my finger tapping the screen and controlling the text boxes.
