Tip #3

Run on sentences

This I also have trouble with myself.

Personally, I believe the best way is to find a common ground to end the sentence with either a period or a semicolon.

Usually run on sentences erupt from a overuse of commas and conjunctions. A conjunction is for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.

Below, I provided an example of the overuse of conjunctions.

Ex. The girl woke up and got dressed and then she went to find her school bag but noticed it wasn't there so she asked her mom who didn't know so then she asked her brother who as well didn't know so she became upset and decided to go to school without it and hoped her teachers would understand but they didn't.

This I just made up but just kept adding conjunctions.

The best way to stop this is to become familiar with sentence variety. I'm going to revise the run on sentence above to the best of my ability.

The girl woke up and got dressed. She went to find her school bag but noticed that it was not there. Becoming worried, she went downstairs to ask her mom. Her mother said that she didn't know where it was and told her to ask her brother. Agreeing, the girl asked her brother who as well didn't know. Sighing in defeat, the girl decided to go to school without it and hoped that the teachers would understand. To her dismay, they didn't.

I didn't change much. I just added some periods, sentence variety, and a few more details.

I can cover sentence variety or any of the terms above if this is still confusing.

All you have to do is reread your sentence and find where you should stop it. Usually when you use more than two or three conjunctions in one sentence is when you should stop the sentence.

I hope this isn't too confusing but if it is, drop a comment below on what you need help with and we'll try to help you!
